RENEWABLE ENERGY

Nigeria is blest with abundant natural resources, tropical land, sufficient sunlight and rainfall and its
geo-strategically location have positioned the nation in a unique spot within Africa.
Electricity is an integral part of our daily life. As a nation, we are now at the mercy of electricity to
accomplish various tasks like supplying light to our homes, offices and schools ,power our drives in
factories and manufacturing plant, SME etc. The unreliability energy issue continues to increase daily,
which has really affected our economy. The main source of energy is electrical energy where the
demand of energy have risen drastically in recent time. The overdependence of oil and reduction of
water level to generate electricity in our recent times comes with pollution, exhalation of different
and injurious gases that causes global warming and which affects our human system.
Previous study shows that Nigeria is within short to moderate wind liveliness zone according to Nigeria
Meteorological office. Nigeria is also blest with 12 monthly consistent daily brightness of about 6.25
hours, ranging from 9 hours in the northern hemisphere of the country and to about 3.5 hours in the
southern part, this sunlight can be harness
Recent improvement in semiconductor (power electronics) have improve the switching speed of
voltage source inverter used to convert the DC voltage to AC voltage. The development of different
electric motor and servo drive have drastically improve the reliability, smooth torque production

and continuous operation of the drive at various atmospheric condition. Figure 1, shows a full
block diagram of application of renewable energy.

Watching the recent solar Impulse aircraft and the electric car designed by Tesla to apply to study
sustainable energy systems under the sponsorship of Chevening. Instead of using fossil fuel,

sustainable energy can be harness to drive motors, light up homes, offices and schools My MSc
dissertation titled electric machine with integrated torque limiter, will improve the power density

and reduce the likelihood of jamming associated with gear box. A Combination of my Electrical

and Electronics, Avionic systems with a background in power electronics, electric machines, reliability
and failure of electrical systems, electrical power systems (which involves energy generation, energy
conversion, transmission and distribution) and Sustainable energy system will greatly improve me as
green energy expert. As a green energy expert/consultant, I would improve the power generation and
distribution problem plaguing my country, reduce environmental hazard issue caused by burning fossil
fuel and contribute significant amount of these energy to the country national grid. I will work closely
with the Nigeria Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Energy and Power under the Renewable
Energy Programme to ensure safe environment, encourage afforestation and consistent power supply
both in the rural area and urban area for economic growth.
Finally, currently am a member with IET and IEEE, I will be working towards becoming a chartered
engineer and senior fellow, and also chartered fellow with IES. Hopefully, I will pursue a PhD in
sustainable energy in the near future.
