restored Georgian townhouse on North Great
Georges Street. The building is based in an area
with many Joycean landmarks, including Belvedere
College, where he went to school at the top of the
street. The house also boasts a unique connection
with Joyce through Professor Denis J. Maginni, who
operated a dancing academy here at the turn of the
last century and who appears in the novel Ulysses.

AIRCOACH
JEANIE JOHNSTON
TALLSHIP AND
FAMINE MUSEUM
A step aboard the Jeanie Johnston is a step towards
understanding the daunting experience of the
millions of people who crossed the Atlantic seeking
survival and hope in the New World of North
America. Once on board, visitors are transported
back in time 150 years or more to join the poverty
stricken Irish emigrants as they boarded the sturdy
ship for the difficult transatlantic voyage and
uncertain future in the New World.
The life-sized figures that are present in the
museum below deck are all based on actual
passengers who sailed on the ship. From the 15
year old girl (Margaret Conway) travelling only
with her 12 year old brother, to the father of 11
(James Stack) whose livelihood was ruined by the
famine.all the misery, anguish and confusion of
the emigrant Irish are vividly brought to mind.
Back up on deck, visitors have an opportunity to
marvel at the skill, ingenuity and craftwork involved
in re-creating this genuine replica of a wooden tall
ship, one of the last of its type to sail the Atlantic
in the 19th Century. Jeanie Johnston is docked at
Custom House Quay in Dublins city centre and is
an accurate replica of the original ship which sailed
between Tralee in Co. Kerry and North America
between 1847 and 1855. Guided tours for visitors
are conducted daily.

CASTLETOWN
HOUSE &
PARKLANDS
Welcome to the Casino at Marino!
The Casino is Irelands miniature 18th century
architectural masterpiece designed as a pleasure
house for James Caulfeild, 1st earl of Charlemont in
1759. Lord Charlemont commissioned one of the finest
architects of the day, Sir William Chambers, to create
a unique and intriguing garden temple from which to
overlook the magnificent panorama of Dublin Bay.
The Casino, meaning small house surprises visitors
as they discover the remarkable secrets of this
architectural gem. Its lavishly decorated and compact
exterior cleverly disguises an interior of 16 intimate
rooms displaying intricately ornate Georgian motifs.
The richly patterned marquetry floors and beautifully
executed plasterwork, act as an historical backdrop
to the Casinos past, lovingly brought to life by our
friendly and knowledgeable guides. Cared for by the
OPW (Office of Public Works) the Casino at Marino is
regarded internationally for its exquisite craftsmanship
which continues the legacy of Lord Charlemonts vision.
The unique interiors of the building act as a backdrop
to showcase works of artists and designers.

This I believe the only house in Ireland to which the

term palace can be applied. Richard Twiss, 1775.
Castletown is Irelands first and finest 18th century
Palladian style mansion. The Castletown Estate is
located in Celbridge, Co. Kildare and is set amongst
120 acres of beautiful historic parklands along
the banks of the River Liffey. The historic village
of Celbridge is the renowned birthplace of Arthur
Guinness and the courting grounds of the celebrated
writer Dean Jonathan Swift.
We invite you to come and explore the incredible
beauty of the restored 18th century parklands and
river walks and to learn about the Conolly family,
the wonderful decorative arts collection and to also
enjoy our extensive events programme. The Office of
Public Works with The Castletown Foundation relish
the opportunity of imagining a 21st century future
for this 18th century Italian Palazzo by the Liffey
and welcome you to be part of its unfolding story.

Highlights for 2015: Paradise Lost: Lord Charlemonts

Lost Gardens at Marino which gathers together an
eclectic mix of evidence and remnants of a long lost
garden and demesne.

DUBLIN
WRITERS
MUSEUM
Dublinia is one of Dublins top visitor attractions with
three exciting exhibitions all located at the historic
crossroads of Dublin.
Viking Dublin and Medieval Dublin re-create the city
through life-size reconstructions including a Viking
house and a medieval fair, while Death and Disease
of medieval times are also investigated. Finally
unearth the citys past at the interactive History
Hunters exhibition, visit an excavation site and see
medieval bugs under the microscope in the Lab.
See Dublin from a new perspective and come
away knowing more about its citizens throughout
the ages.

The Irish literary tradition is one of the most

illustrious in the world, famous for four Nobel prize
winners and for many other writers of international
renown. In 1991 the Dublin Writers Museum was
opened to house a history and celebration of
literary Dublin.
Situated in a magnificent 18th century mansion in
the north city centre, the collection features the
lives and works of Dublins literary celebrities over
the past three hundred years. Swift and Sheridan,
Shaw and Wilde, Yeats, Joyce and Beckett are
among those presented through their books,
letters, portraits and personal items.
The splendidly restored Georgian house is a
pleasure in itself with its sumptuous plasterwork
and decorative stained glass windows.
The museum holds exhibitions, readings and
lunchtime performances and has a special room
devoted to childrens literature. It is an essential visit
for anyone who wants to discover, explore or simply
enjoy Dublins immense literary heritage.

JEANIE JOHNSTON
TALLSHIP AND
FAMINE MUSEUM
The James Joyce Centre is located in a beautifully
restored Georgian townhouse on North Great
Georges Street. The building is based in an area
with many Joycean landmarks, including Belvedere
College, where he went to school at the top of the
street. The house also boasts a unique connection
with Joyce through Professor Denis J. Maginni, who
operated a dancing academy here at the turn of the
last century and who appears in the novel Ulysses.

A step aboard the Jeanie Johnston is a step towards

understanding the daunting experience of the
millions of people who crossed the Atlantic seeking
survival and hope in the New World of North
America. Once on board, visitors are transported
back in time 150 years or more to join the poverty
stricken Irish emigrants as they boarded the sturdy
ship for the difficult transatlantic voyage and
uncertain future in the New World.

The Centre houses a permanent interpretative

exhibition which includes computer installations,
room recreations, video documentaries, and other
items relating to the life and work of Joyce. These
include the front door to No. 7 Eccles Street, the
home of Leopold and Molly Bloom, a copy of
Joyces death mask and the furniture from the
apartment of Paul Leon where Joyce worked on his
final novel Finnegans Wake. A free audio guide is
included as part of admission.

The Centre also provides acclaimed walking tours

of Joyces Dublin, as well as hosting a free lecture
series and other Joyce-related events throughout
the year, in particular, the Bloomsday Festival
on 16th June. Visit the Centres website for
further details.

LITTLE MUSEUM
OF DUBLIN
If for no other reason, Kilmainham Gaol would be
remarkable for being one of the biggest unoccupied
gaols in these islands. As such, it gives the visitor a
dramatic and realistic insight into what it was like
to have been confined in one of these forbidding
bastions of punishment and correction between
1796 when it opened, and 1924 when it closed,
and offers a panoramic insight into some of the
most profound, disturbing and inspirational
themes of modern Irish history. Leaders of the
rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916
were detained here. Such names as Robert Emmet,
Charles Stewart Parnell, leaders of the 1916 Rising
and Eamon DeValera, the first Taoiseach (Prime
Minister) of Ireland, are associated with the Gaol.
The visit includes a guided tour and exhibition.
Please note that due to major building works being
undertaken at Kilmainham Gaol during 2015,
certain areas of the Gaol, principally the East
Wing and the Exhibition/Museum area will not
be accessible from time to time. Updates will be
posted on www.heritageireland.ie

unique history all of its own in another life. As the
National Museum of Ireland Decorative Arts &
History, Collins Barracks joins together with two
other famous museums, Archaeology and Natural
History, to complete the picture as the National
Museum of Ireland in Dublin. This museum charts
Irelands economic, social, political and military
progress through the ages. Artefacts on display
range from silver, Asian art, ceramic and glassware
pieces to weaponry, furniture, examples of folklife
and costume.
The Military History exhibition called Soldiers and
Chiefs: The Irish at War at Home and Abroad,
1550-2001 uses original artefacts, letters, replicas
and audio accounts, showing how soldiering and
war have affected the lives of Irish people.
All of these pieces are displayed with imagination
in innovative and contemporary galleries, which
entice you to go further, look harder and examine
more closely.

Our exhibitions have changed very little in over

a century. The ground floor is dedicated to Irish
animals, featuring giant deer skeletons and a variety
of mammals, birds and fish. The 2nd floor of the
building is laid out in the 19th century in a scientific
arrangement showing animals by taxonomic group.
This scheme demonstrated the diversity of animal
life in an evolutionary sequence.
In April 2010 the Museum reopened after
restoration works that included the reinstatement
of the grand stone staircase, open to the public for
the first time in decades. While Natural History was
closed, the Education and Outreach Department
developed two new learning spaces, including
the Discovery Zone where visitors can handle
taxidermy and open drawers to see what is lurking
inside, and our Reading Area at first floor level which
is a great place to rest and settle down with a good
book.

OLD JAMESON
DISTILLERY
Number Twenty Nine is Dublins Georgian House
Museum. Visitors take a tour from the basement to
the attic, through rooms which have been furnished
with original artefacts as they would have been in
the years 1790 to 1820.

Join us for a guided tour through the resonant past of

Irelands leading selling whiskey - Jameson Irish
Whiskey. Learn about the art of Maturation, the Angels
Share, Triple Distillation and taste above all the smooth
taste of Jameson.

The tour starts in the kitchen area which would

have been a hive of activity when the house was
lived in. It continues into the spacious and
elegant dining room and the ornate front and
back drawing rooms on the first floor, the most
public rooms in the house, where all the finery the
occupants could afford was on show. Visitors then
proceed to the more modest private quarters and
conclude their tour in the attic of Number Twenty
Nine, once home to the governess and the children
of the family.

Open 7 days all year, Discover why Jameson is the

number 1 selling Irish whiskey in the world. Savour a
delicious lunch or Jameson cocktail. Browse the Gift
Shop for that exclusive Jameson gift idea.

Number Twenty Nine Lower Fitzwilliam St. was first

occupied in 1794, during a time of great change
and expansion in Irelands capital. The first
occupant was Mrs. Olivia Beatty, the widow of
a prominent Dublin wine merchant. Visiting the
exhibition gives young and old alike a chance to
experience what life was like for the fortunate who
lived in such elegant townhouses, and the less
fortunate who worked in them. The museum is
presented by Electricity Supply Board in partnership
with the National Museum of Ireland.

Skerries Mills is a unique experience to visit.

This award winning restoration of the Great 5 Sail
Windmill, Thatched 4 Sail Windmill and Watermill
is set in the town park at the centre of the beautiful
seaside town of Skerries. The history of the mills
can be traced to the early 16th century. All three
mills are in working order and demonstrate an
efficient and clean use of water and wind power and
are a rare survival of 17th, 18th and 19th century
industrial history. Guided tours last approximately
50 minutes during which time your guide will
show you the history of milling and Skerries Mills.
Try your hand at stone grinding flour; see the
water wheel in action turning the sieves, shakers,
blowers, etc. inside the mill. Go to the top of the 4
Sail Windmill and visit the 5 Sail Windmill taking
in the views of the town as well as the islands off
Skerries and the coast line as far as the Mourne
Mountains which are available from the site. After
your tour relax in the Watermill Caf where we have

baked scones daily. Then browse for that souvenir

the River Liffey for a journey through the heart
of Dublin. Passengers will get an insight into the
history of Dublin City and of the River Liffey in
particular, from the first arrival of the Vikings 1000
years ago, to the rapid development of the city
during the 18th and 19th Centuries to become
a major European capital and of the subsequent
decline and more recent redevelopment of
Dublins Docklands.

Docklands, can accommodate up to 48 passengers,

day Dublin now sits on reclaimed land, including
Trinity College and the Spire in OConnell Street.

from. Let us tell you the fascinating story of Dublins
gin palaces and writers. Join our team of actors for
this award-winning tour and follow in the footsteps
