Police Chief Anna Ruzinski, the heroes of
the day were honored with poignant

President Ron Bertieri thanked the veterans in attendance for answering the call
of duty and making our Armed Forces the
best in the world.
It is very special to see our schools in
the community come together to honor
those who have protected the greatest
country in the world, he said.

Phone survey indicates support

for possible district referendum

A telephone survey indicated support for several options that could be

part of a School District of Menomonee
Falls referendum question next spring.
The district is evaluating options for
a referendum next spring and previously conducted an online and paper survey through the School Perceptions
firm in October. A follow up phone survey was conducted by the Springsted
firm from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, and the
results were summarized by Springsted
representative Jerry Dudzik during the
Nov. 9 School Board meeting. There
were 300 completed phone interviews
in the survey, which has a margin of
error of plus or minus 5.
According to Dudzik, respondents
were first asked if they would support a
referendum to "upgrade and improve
the District's aging schools. That question resulted in 71 percent of those
responding indicating support, 19 percent were opposed and 10 percent were
undecided.
"In terms of our firm we've done
hundreds of these surveys. Usually it's
around 50 percent," Dudzik said of the
initial level of support. "So it's an
extraordinary response you have right
here, we usually do not see that."
When asked about specific projects,
91 percent of respondents indicated
support for repairing old or inefficient
infrastructure; 84 percent indicated
support for upgrading science, math
and manufacturing spaces; 69 percent
supported renovating and modernizing
a school built between 1940-69, 68 percent supported upgrading fiber net-
works and 57 percent supports upgrading and and modernizing the North
Middle School Auditorium.
There was less support in the phone
survey for upgrading the entrance to
Shady Lane Elementary School (45 percent), demolishing the Jefferson and
Hiawatha school buildings (40 percent),
and expanding the south gym at the
high school (29 percent).
After those questions were asked,
the first question asking general support was repeated, with 61 percent
expressing support, 32.7 percent
opposed and 6.3 percent undecided.
The survey then tested the level of
cost support for a building referendum.
According to the survey, 70 percent of
respondents would support a referendum that had an impact of $39 for a
home valued at $100,000. That figure
drops to 55.7 percent support for a
referendum that would have an impact
of $59 on a home valued at $100,000.
The survey then asked residents for
their support for a referendum that
would allow the district to increase its
operating budget to maintain class size,
programs and certified teachers in elementary elective classes. A general
question indicated that 67 percent of
residents supported such a referendum,
27 percent were opposed while 6 percent were undecided. Residents then
showed support for an operating referendum that would allow the district to
offer art, music, library media, gym,
guidance and health at the elementary
level (82.3 percent); offering art,
music, business, career preparation,
technology education and world languages at higher grade levels (80 per-
cent); and maintaining class sizes (70

percent).
When the general question about an
operating referendum was asked again,
66 percent supported the question,
28.7 percent were opposed while 5.3
percent were undecided. Dudzik said
the change in the question responses
was "statistically insignificant."
When testing cost, 77 percent of
respondents supported an operating
referendum that would have an annual
impact of $25 on a home valued at
$100,000 for five years. That figure
dropped to 53.3 percent of residents
who supported an advisory referendum
that would have an impact of $45 for a
home valued at $100,000 for five years.
From the phone survey, Dudzik concluded there is a base of support for
both a facilities and operating referendum. Dudzik said that to get voter support for a facilities referendum, the
annual cost should be below $59 annually for a home valued at $100,000. To
get support for an operating referendum, the annual cost should be below
$39 for a home valued at $100,000.
In response to the phone survey
results, School Board member Mark
Nadolski said it appeared the results
show support for maintenance and
facility upgrades and less support for
"discretionary" things.
In comparing the two surveys,
Superintendent Patricia Greco said the
paper survey conducted earlier in the
fall had more comments from residents
near the Thomas Jefferson and
Hiawatha buildings, and there was more
support for the demolition of those
buildings.

Schneider family donates
Buddy Bench to Shady Lane
Theres a new addition to the playground at Shady Lane Elementary, its
not a slide or a jungle gym, but the
students just love to hang out on it
with their friends. And its all thanks
to one of the schools students and his
family. Chris Schneider is a 5th grade
student at Shady Lane, and not only
did his sister and four older brothers
attend Shady Lane, so did his dad,
uncle and aunt. His grandfather Chuck
was also a bus driver for Shady Lane.
I love Shady Lane School, said
Stephanie Schneider, Chriss mom.
When Chriss grandpa got sick a couple years ago we talked about how
much he loved Shady Lane School and
wanted to do something very special to
honor shady lane school and my dad.
A Buddy Bench is not a new concept, may schools have them, but it
does serve a very special purpose to
the students at Shady Lane Elementary
School. If a student every feels left
out, or like they have no one to talk
to, they can go sit on the buddy bench
and other students can join in to make
sure that student doesnt feel left out.
It is a safe place that you can sit
on during recess if you feel that you

may have no one to play with or talk
to or even walk around the playground
with, said Stephanie Schneider. As a
school community it is our responsibility to watch out for each other and to
make sure everyone was included.
Shady Lane Elementarys principal
echoed this sentiment, stating that
the Buddy Bench will be a great opportunity for students to foster strong
relationships.
Shady Lane Elementary prides
itself on being inclusive with our staff
and students, said Brad Hoffman,
Shady Lane Elementary Principal. This
Buddy Bench, so generously donated
by the Schneider family, is just one
more way for our students to connect
with each other and build strong relationships.
The back of the bench will have a
plaque which will read In Memory of
Chuck Wittman, the richest man in
town.
Chriss grandpa wanted us to get
this bench for your school because he
was rich; not rich in money, but he was
rich in many, many friends, Stephanie
Schneider said. He knew that friendships made everyone richer. So lets
make Shady Lane the richest school in

town. The Buddy Bench is located on
the northeast side of the school next
to the playground.

Germantown boys top Nicolet in sectional final
The Germantown boys volleyball team overcame an early
deficit in the first game and rallied to close out the third against
Nicolet on the way to a threegame win in the sectional final
Nov. 5 at Homestead High
School.
With the 25-19, 25-22, 31-29
win
over
the
Knights,
Germantown advanced to its
fourth state tournament in five
years. The streak was interrupted
by a loss to Arrowhead in the
2014
sectional
semifinal.
Germantown beat Arrowhead
Nov. 3 to advance to the sectional final.
"Ever since last year the goal
was to get to Wisconsin Lutheran
(College, where the state tournament is held)," said setter Logan
Reindl.
Germantown has been ranked

in the state coaches poll during
the season, including topping
the ranking Sept. 16 and being
tied with Kaukauna for the top
spot in the poll a week later.
Germantown
will
play
Brookfield East in a state quarterfinal at Wisconsin Lutheran
College Nov. 13.
Outside hitter Max Keefe
added that the goal of the season
was to "get back and redeem ourselves" from the sectional semifinal loss the previous season.
Germantown fell behind in
the first game 6-1 but then rallied with a 10-3 run to close out
the game. The teams were even
through the second game but a
five-point run turned the tide for
the Warhawks.
In
the
third
game,
Germantown bolted out to a 4-0

lead but the Knights stayed close
the rest of the way, as the teams
stayed within a point of each
other in the latter stages of the
match. Late in the match,
Germantown relied on several
key kills by Keefe to keep Nicolet
from closing out the third game.
"He's grown so much as a
player," Germantown Coach Brian
Rushmer said of Keefe, noting
that Keefe does not play the club
volleyball season.

Germantown with 15 kills while
Jack Thompsen had three blocks
and Chris Stapelman had 12 digs.
Afterward, Rushmer noted
that Germantown trailed in every
game before rallying for the win.

Menomonee Falls golfers Academic All-State honorees

The Golf Coaches Association of
Wisconsin (GCAW) recently announced
that Cierra Brown, Brooke Leitner,
and
Kaitlin Kirchberger of
Menomonee Falls High School are
Academic All-State honorees for the
girls golf season that just concluded.
Students are nominated by GCAW
member coaches if they meet the following criteria: 1) A cumulative grade
point average of at least 3.25, 2) participation in at least 75% of their teams

varsity matches, and 3) are at least a
sophomore in high school. Cierra is a
student-athlete who serves as a great
example to others, proving that academic and athletic successes are not
mutually exclusive.
The coaches association announced
that 307 girls from 89 high schools
have been honored this year for maintaining high academic standards in the
classroom while competing in varsity
golf. In fact, the average cumulative
GPA of this years honorees is an exceptional 3.800. The GCAW was formed by
high school golf coaches in 1986 to help
build Wisconsin's reputation for developing quality junior players by promoting golf in our schools and communi-
ties. Besides honoring both boys and

girls who succeed as student athletes,
the association also selects an annual
All-State team for boys and girls based
on their playing ability. On March 1,
2012 a newly established award honoring the high school team with the highest cumulative GPA was also begun.
The girls team award will be announced
in February, 2016.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by my

dentist to have laser surgery to fix my gum
disease. Can you comment on whether this is
safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings I
have been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If

Leaf raking for seniors

The Menomonee Falls Optimist Clubs Leaf Raking for Seniors took place
on Saturday, Nov. 7. More than 200 area youth from six groups help clean
yards at thirty homes in Menomonee Falls. Parents, coaches, and over
twenty Optimist Club members aided the youth. Groups involved included;
the Falls Angels softball team, the Junior Indians football team, Cub Scout
Packs 109 and 36, and Menomonee Falls High School Junior Optimists,
Student Council, and National Honor Society.

Drug paraphernalia
A 54-year-old Menomonee Falls
man was cited for possession of drug
paraphernalia after police responded to
his residence in the 14000 block of
Manchester Drive at 11:28 p.m. Oct. 25.
The man was reported to be unconscious and having a seizure after smoking synthetic marijuana. Police located
a pipe in the mans possession.
Operating after revocation
A 22-year-old woman was taken
into custody for operating after revocation and an ignition interlock device
violation at 12:58 a.m. Oct. 28 after she
was stopped for speeding at Main Street
and Fond du Lac Avenue.
Operating after revocation
A 36-year-old Fond du Lac woman
was arrested for operating after revocation at 12:10 a.m. Oct. 22 following a
traffic stop at Elm Lane and Appleton
Avenue.
Operating while intoxicated

A 25-year-old Milwaukee man was
taken into custody for operating while
intoxicated at 11:29 p.m. Oct. 31 after
he was stopped for travelling 77 m.p.h.
in a 55 m.p.h. zone in the 13000 block
of Highway 41.
A motorist was arrested for operating while intoxicated-third offense at
1:35 a.m. Nov. 1 after he was stopped
for speeding in the 13000 block of Fond
du Lac Avenue.
Theft
Both license plates of a 1998
Nissan Sentra were reported stolen during the overnight hours of Oct. 29 and
30 from an area near Ravine Drive and
Parkway Drive.
A 24-year-old woman was taken
into custody for theft, obstructing, possession of a controlled substance and
four outstanding warrants at 1:40 p.m.
Oct. 31 in the W1000 block of Appleton
Avenue following the theft of liquor at
BP gas station. The womans passenger,
her 19-year-old sister, was charged with
two state counts of theft for the liquor.

Pilgrim Road project nears completion

The reconstruction of Pilgrim Road
between Main Street and Megal Drive is
on schedule to be completed with in
the next few weeks.
The project has involved the reconstruction of the bridge over Hwy.
41/45, the creation of one access point
onto Pilgrim Road for the HarleyDavidson and Wacker Neuson operations, and the installation of infrastructure improvements along the corridor.
Brian DeNeve, spokesperson for the
state Department of Transportation,

said work that remains to be done on
the project includes completion of
median turn lanes and islands, along
with barrier wall work on the freeway
and on the ramps. He said that all lanes
on the bridge and on Main Street are
expected to be open by early December.
"As of now, the project is on time
and within budget," he added.

of time, lifting 25lbs-50lbs, bending. Salting cheese, putting in molds, dumping molds, turning molds.
BRINE ROOM
Taking cheese in and out of brine, dumping salt on cheese, putting in tanks. Data Entry. 10% forklift
driving-they will train. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Involves, packaging cheddar in
a bag, pulling a large bag over the top of large cheese and sealing. Palletizing. Lifting, bending.
