Summary:

Issue:

Powerpath Migration Enabler (PPME): Log files named log.0000000XXX in C:\Program Files\EMC\PPME\db\ folder
grow to more than 16 GB after PPME migration is started.
Log files named log.0000000XXX in C:\Program Files\EMC\PPME\db\ folder grow to huge size after PPME migration is
started.
A new log file of 10 MB is being created for each migration after 5 minutes. 5 minutes is the check point time we use
during sync operation. However in the local reproduction, we observe that log files are being over written and no new log
files are being created.
Space on C: drive got filled as a result of growing size of C:\Program Files\EMC\PPME\db\ folder.
Got below error while running the PPME Commands:C:\Windows\system32>powermig info -all -query
unable to join the environment
OpenFileMapping: There is not enough space on the disk.
PANIC: No space left on device
PPME_DB error(-30973): DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
We noted the following Errors in the Hostcopy.log file:2014/04/30 07:14:08 [5:harddisk8_harddisk33] checkpoint failed (PPME_DB error(-30973): DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal
error, run database recovery)
2014/04/30 07:19:19 [7:harddisk10_harddisk38] checkpoint failed (PPME_DB error(-30973): DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal
error, run database recovery)
2014/04/30 07:19:21 [9:harddisk14_harddisk41] checkpoint failed (PPME_DB error(-30973): DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal
error, run database recovery)
2014/04/30 07:34:31 [6:harddisk9_harddisk36] checkpoint failed (PPME_DB error(-30973): DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal
error, run database recovery)

Environment:

EMC SW: Powerpath for Windows 5.7 SP1

OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 x64

Cause:
Enormous log files generated in customer hosts due to issue with Oracle DB logging after 5 minutes for every migration.
Change:

Move some of the Log files under the folder C:\Program Files\EMC\PPME\db\ to and another drive to make room.
You should be able to run the PPME query now
C:\Windows\system32>powermig info -query -all

Resolution:

Workaround 1:
Increase the check_point interval to 900 seconds(from current 300 seconds) to reduce the amount of logging space that
is being taken. The procedure to increase the checkpoint time is follows.
1. Create the environment variable PPME_CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL and set the appropriate value(900 in this case)
2. After setting PPME_CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL system environment variable EmcPowMig service should be restarted.
Workaround 2:
1. Abort the Migrations.
2. Cleanup the migrations.
3. Uninstall Powerpath and reboot the server.
4. Reinstall Powerpath and reboot the server.
5. Now retry the migrations.
This issue was only seen in one instance. Engineering is working with Oracle to find a permanent solution. Please
contact EMC technical support quoting this KB in case the above workarounds do not work.
