INTRODUCTION
Education is a lifelong process .It includes
acquisition of knowledge and experience which helps a
3

person to lead a full and meaningful life. It is an ever

evolving process. A number of problems can be solved by
educational

research.

Through

education,

the

inner

capacities or potentialities of the learners are developed

and brought to light. In broad sense, life is education and
education is all experiences in life which have educative
significance and in turn forms part of the life long process
of education. By education Pestalozzi means the natural,
progressive and harmonious development and growth
which cannot be limited in a narrow sense.
Mathematics is the queen of science and the
language of nature. Mathematics is an accepted science
which deals with the quantitative aspects of our life and
knowledge .It helps us in drawing necessary conclusions
and interpreting various ideas with useful meaning. The
term

Mathematics may be defined in number of ways.

It is an exact science which is related to measurements,

calculations discovering relationships and dealing with
problems of space. Mathematics represents a high level
of abstraction attained by the human mind One of

the

great mathematician Galileo defines Mathematics is the

language in which god has written in the universe.

A library is the collection of the of resources

of information and similar resources made accessible to a
defined community for reference or borrowing.it provides
physical or digital aces to material and may be a physical
building or room or a virtual space or both. A librarys
collection can include books, periodicals newspapers,
manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, microform,
CDs and other formats. A library is organized for use and
maintained by a public body, an institution, a corporation
or a private individual. A library is a treasure house of
knowledge. A well-stocked library is an asset to the
school, collage, university or the neighborhood.
Mathematics

library

which

include

mathematical text books, articles, CDs and also statistics

text books, No regular school today can afford to be
without a library it is an integral part of every good
school. According to Bacon, Reading make a full man.
Every students is motivated to become a full man.

Mathematics library make a man with knowledge of

Mathematics.

It

provides

immediate

access

to

the

necessary Mathematics books.

NEED AND
IMPORTANCE OF
MATHEMATICS
LIBRARY
Mathematics is quite vast subject. Even if a
teacher is to restrict himself to a certain amount of
subject matter according to a particular class, that too
can be done in so many ways? A Mathematics teacher
should not follow only the textbooks .The teacher must
study some standard books from the library. This will
provide him a deeper insight into the subject and
thorough command of the same. The teacher will be able
to plan and organize his teaching in a better way, better
than that given in the text book. One of the important
aims of school is to widen the outlook of the students and
to create in them a love for extra-reading .Library service
helps in putting progressive methods of teaching into
6

practice. Library is also an agency which may inspire

potential

writers

and

research

workers

among

the

students.
Mathematics library is one of the
important sources of acquiring mathematical knowledge
and skills. It serves the purpose of including good reading
and study habits which help in promoting self-study and
independent work among students. The students, at this
young age should be exposed to the joy of reading and
should be equipped with adequate reference skills.
However, with the advent of information technology and
cyber cafes, there is growing decline in the reading of
books. The different types of books available in the
Mathematics library help the students in promoting
reading habits.
Mathematics library facilitates
timely use of the books and inculcates reference skills. As
the Mathematics teacher is in charge of the Mathematics
library, the students can seek the teachers help and
guidance in locating and selecting the relevant books. A
Mathematics library, is not only a source of learning and
inspiration for students but it also serves the need of the
7

teachers. A teacher must keep his knowledge ever fresh

and up to date, this possible only by making a free use of
Mathematics library. He can also learn the latest methods
of teaching Mathematics from the new books available in
the library. Thus, a good Mathematics library helps to
keep the lamp of Mathematics knowledge burning so as
to kindle light in minds of the students as also teachers.
A Mathematics library provides
immediate access to the necessary Mathematics books. It
also provides the Mathematics teacher with an important
role

in

the

Mathematics

selection
library.

It

of

relevant

promotes

books

efficiency

for

the

in

the

organization of library services. Mathematics library

provides a sense of separate identity to Mathematics and
helps to motivate the students to learn Mathematics with
genuine interest. The Mathematics teacher should be
take the responsibility of organizing the Mathematics
library and be in charge of such a library. Mathematics
library can be situated in a large classroom or in a
separate section in the Mathematics laboratory. The
effective use of the library by the students can be
ensured by allotting a separate period in the timetable for

library work. The Mathematics teacher should motivate

the students to use the library time more productively.
The Mathematics library should be
attractive and should provide an atmosphere conducive
for reading. A Mathematics library provides the extra
information necessary for Mathematics, since a teacher of
Mathematics may not find time to go beyond the
prescribed textbooks. Mathematics learning requires a lot
of drills and practice, a particular set of textbooks cannot
serve this purpose. A Mathematics library helps in drill
and practice as the students can refer a number of books
other than the prescribed textbooks. The different types
of problems and approaches available in different books
help the students in developing their problem-solving
ability and adopting different approaches to problemsolving, thus making them more open-minded and
independent.

It

provides

adequate

materials

and

information necessary for completing the assignments

and homework.
Classroom teaching sometimes
leaves many gaps and doubts. They can be removed if
the students make use of good books available in the
9

library. Mathematics teacher can help the students in the

selection of good books in library.

A separate library for

Mathematics is great necessity for rendering proper help

to needy students. Such library can be housed in
Mathematics room and can be put under the charge of
Mathematics teacher. There should be a period of library
reading in the time table so as to enable the students of
every class to make use of the library.

A separate

Mathematics library is essential thing.

Mathematics library is quite useful
to the students.

When students read or consult some

books from the library their doubts become clear.

Moreover, the study of library books acquaints them with
new exercises or problems and prepares them better for
the examination. A good mathematics library also helps
in

inculcating

proper

attitudes,

interests,

and

appreciations in the students .It can acquaint them with

the historical background of different topic and the
contribution of various mathematicians.
The topic of Mathematics Library can usefully be divided
into two topics:
1. General school Library
10

2. Mathematics Departmental Library

GENERAL SCHOOL LIBRARY

In most of our schools, there is a general
school library which contain books and magazines on all
subjects. Then there should be separate sections for
mathematical books. Books on mathematics must get a
significant place in the general library. The books on
latest techniques of teaching Mathematics should also
find an important place in the library. It should also
contain a selection of good text books. Their selection
should be carefully made. It will also be useful to include
textbooks from other countries. Their advantage lies in
the fact that they can be compared with our own
textbooks from various points of view.
Though there cannot be many
general

reference

books

or

recreational

books

on

Mathematics, yet as many of them are available in

market should be provided in the library. Separate books
on catch and puzzle problems and shortcut methods may
be produced. Some books on the history of Mathematics,
lives and works of great inspiring mathematicians may be

11

a good provision. The books selected must be authorities

and reliable sources of information.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY

Mathematics departmental library is
also called subject library. This should contain useful
reference books of daily use. The books selected should
be according to the needs of the pupils and these of the
teacher. Classroom teaching sometimes leaves many
gaps and doubts. They can removed if the students make
use of good books available in the library. Mathematics
teacher can help the students in the selection of good
books in the library.
A mathematics library is not only a
source of learning and inspiration for students but it also
serves the need of teachers. A teacher must keep his
knowledge ever fresh and up to date, this is possible only
by making a free use of mathematics library.

CONCLUSION
12

Library has a key role in scheme of

education. Classroom teaching must be supplement with
the

dissemination of knowledge through

library.

In

Mathematics the students are required to do a lot of

practice work which they can do so most efficiently in
Mathematics library. Library also is quite useful to
students for updating their knowledge and develop a
taste for the subject.

Different types of books in

mathematics library can help the students to tackle all

types

of

problems

emerging

from

different

topics

prescribed in their syllabus. Classroom teaching may

leave many gaps and doubts unclarified. A good library
provides

opportunities

for

filling

up

the

gaps

and

removing the doubts. It provides facilities for the gifted

students

to

satisfy

their

curiosity

and

thirst

for

knowledge. Thus, it is essential that all out efforts be

made to establish a separate Mathematics library in
every school. We have seen that a good Mathematics
library quite useful for properly developing good study
habits in students.
