1. La paraphrase prime l'analyse dans le trs court espace allou chaque auteur. Les
rapports entre le thme des stimulants et les proccupations principales des auteurs en
question ne sont gure analyss, pas plus que les diffrences esthtiques qui marquent
l'utilisation de ce thme chez des auteurs de valeur trs ingale. Quels sont, surtout, les
principes qui ont prsid ce choix d'auteurs ? (Cf. la liste donne, p. 58, n. 1). Signalons
que le livre d'Alethea Hayter, Opium and the Romantic Imagination, London, Faber and
Faber, 1968, bien que quelquefois insuffisammentrenseign du ct franais, traite de
faon appofondie certains problmes essentiels.
2. Sa connaissance de la langue franaise s'avre de temps en temps insuffisante:
voir p. 159 les suppositionssur a Sed non satiata , ou p. 187 o Vainement ma raison
voulait prendre la barre est interprtcomme o The poet tries in vain to bar the door .
3. Pour n'en prendre que quelques exemples : sur Nerval, la bibliographie ne fait
mention que du second volume de l'dition de la Bibliothque de la Pliade et de deux
tudes sur cet auteur. Aucune mention de l'important ouvrage de Brierre de Boismont
(1845). Sur Balzac, il aurait fallu discuter, entre bien d'autres dtails, une importante
lettre Moreau de Tours ; si le cinquime volume de l'dition de la Correspondance par
