Firms missing a trick by not welcoming

employees with learning disabilities

IN 2013, the government launched the Disability Confident campaign, in an effort to

halve the disability employment gap. Today
46 per cent of disabled people are in paid
employment, and yet just seven per cent of
people with a learning disability are in the
same position.
Of the 60 large employers across the UK
surveyed by charity Mencap, 45 per cent said
they had not employed someone with a learning disability because they were concerned
it might be more difficult for members of the
public to deal with them.
This figure dropped to 30 per cent, when
representatives did hire people with learning
disabilities.
Nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of employers
felt that not all of their colleagues would be
happy to work with someone with a learning
disability, while 46 per cent of respondents
were worried that there was extra work involved in recruiting and managing someone
with a learning disability.
This survey exposes the nervousness some
employers have when it comes to learning
disability, but also how these nerves disappear for those that have employed staff with
such a disability, said Mark Capper, head of
employment at Mencap.
But, he said: The fact that almost 80 per

cent felt that having a disabled employee

helps a company understand its disabled
customers better presents a huge commercial
benefit to organisations.
People with a learning disability represent
an untapped source of labour that is constantly overlooked.
In 2013, membership organisation Inclusive
Employers, partnered with Mencap to launch
Learning Disabilities Work Experience Week
to help employers understand and experience first-hand the commercial benefits of
employing people with learning disabilities.
This year 60 work experience placements
have been offered to people with varying levels of learning disability across the country.
Donna Miller, European HR director at
Enterprise Rent-A-Car, said her organisation
hadnt just signed up to the scheme because
it was a nice thing to do.
It has done wonders for both staff and
customer engagement, she said. Yes of
course it is part of the doing the right thing,
but it has commercial benefits too. If you can
engage with a customer or other employees
for doing the right thing, then that is just
smart business.
Ms Miller admits that it wasnt until a
senior managers cancer treatment began to
affect his cognitive abilities, that she realised

the car-rental firm was missing a trick by not

welcoming people with learning disabilities.
Ms Miller and her team worked with the
manager and his care provider to assess capability and adapt his workload appropriately.
Why is that any different to someone brand
new to the company who comes to you with a
learning difficulty? she said.
But according to the Mencap survey, traditional technologies and processes could
present a barrier for many organisations
willing to take the step. Nearly half (46 per
cent) of respondents said their organisations
job descriptions, adverts and application
forms were not easy for those with learning
disabilities to complete.
Miller said: Weve been looking at different software, which effectively reads back
email and website copy. As well as benefiting
disabled people, it is really handy for those
colleagues who dont speak English as a first
language.
The approach puts every employee on a
level playing field Miller said, which is often
where many employers fall down. Often its
about not being afraid to ask the question,
she said. If you ask the right question, with
the right intent, you are never going to offend
anybody and you have a much better chance
of getting it right the first time.

Mencap has warned

that with the proposed
changes to the benefits
system including a cut
of 30 a week of ESA
work-related activity
group the employment
opportunities for people
with learning difficulties will significantly
decrease.
