Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
Manesty Electrically Heated Automatic Water Still

Close the lid, Manesty still operate with the lid as a safety valve
Open the water inlet supply to the still using flow control needle valve
Wait until water can be seen flowing from outlet drain (approximately 5-6
minutes)
Before switching on the electrical supply always check that:
the flow rate of inlet water supply is sufficient and continuous;
the outlet drain water flows freely during entire operation ;
there are no water leaks from the tubing connections
CAUTION : Always switch off the electrical supply before turning off the water. failure
to observe this procedure could result in damage to elements

The cooling water from the condenser is fed continuously to the distilling flask.
From which the excess overflows to waste through a constant level device
The dissolved gases are largely expelled, and escape from the hole at the top
of the constant level device.
Removal of acidic and alkaline gases ensures that the pH is as near to neutral
as possible.
If the still has been out of use for some hours, the gases from the atmosphere
will have redissolved in the water left in the distilling flask and therefore,it is
safer to reject the first part of the distillate, this procedure will also remove
dust and microorganisms that have gained access to the condenser while it
was out of use.

 The immersion heater boils the water very rapidly and without bumping , and
the efficient baffling system in the still head removes entrained droplets from
the steam .
in this type of still, the last tenth of the original volume in the flask should not
be collected.
Quality control and maintenance
Limescale will eventually accumulate in the boiler and in the heating element
and must be removed on a regular basis to obtain optimal performance of the
distiller. The interval between cleaning operations depends upon the hardness
of the water supply.
Descaling is performed with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Record in the
logbook (see Annex). Protective equipment (cotton gowns, goggles, thick
rubber gloves)should be worn during the operation.
The chemical reaction should be allowed to continue until all the limescale
deposits have been removed.
At the end of the descaling operation, the acid may have not been completely
neutralized and the liquid flowing to the drain may be strongly acid. Necessary
safety precautions should be observed and control of effluent be followed till
acid is totally eliminated.

Switch on the electrical supply .when the water in the still is boiling adjust the
raw water inlet using the regulator valve until the still runs at constant
temperature of 80 degee celcius
Allow the still to cool
Disconnect the electric and water supplies
Drain the still by opening the drain valve until water ceases to run
Elements used in a hard water areas ,leavedeposit on the element,which
impair its heating efficiency
Elements are checkd on a regular basis and are descaled as necesary
The first and last portions,each to an extent of about 1/10 th of the total volume,are to
be rejected
