A world of versatility
Cost and installation advantages
The new Nera InterLink provides more compelling reasons
than ever to choose microwave radio for trunk networking
environments.
Naturally, it offers the outstanding generic benefits of
microwave radio networks. It is considerably faster to
plan and install compared to fibre optic cable. The financial
advantage goes beyond installation too, with a lower
lifetime cost than leased lines. Overall, the Nera InterLink
enables an uncompelled network rollout speed.
Incorporating the latest generation electronics the
Nera InterLink is also an inherently reliable solution.
Furthermore, it is a highly versatile modular system
covering multiple applications, as well as being easily
reconfigured and upgraded.
Despite its exceptional functionality the Nera InterLink is
remarkably compact. Employing the latest technology design
techniques it is easily housed and accessed in typical
customer environments.

A focused approach from Nera

Nera InterLink is just one system in a total solutions offering
from Nera which includes mobile and access as well as
trunk networking. Nera is dedicated purely to wireless
network solutions and has over 50 years experience
in this field. No other global supplier has this intensity
of purpose.
Likewise, Nera service is a totally focused operation.
We are not distracted by any other technologies or
business interests. As a result we respond to our customers
needs with notable speed and purpose. Nera service
excellence is an enduring reason why so many customers
return to us time after time.

Broadcast Network
Applied flexibility
The Nera InterLink provides the
ideal trunk network solution in all the following applications:
Switching Centre Interconnect
Multiple STM-1 long-distance interconnect. The Nera
trunk networks have been deployed worldwide
with both fixed line and mobile network operators.
Microwave trunk radio solutions are the natural
answer to building nationwide networks quickly.
They offer suitable capacity for initial roll-outs, and
are easily expanded with growing traffic volumes.
Broadcast Contribution/Distribution Network
With the dawn of terrestrial digital broadcasting, the
Nera InterLink is an excellent choice for carrying both
contribution and distribution services. Whether the
network is ATM based or SDH, the Nera InterLink will
offer reliable and high performance transport of the
DAB/DVB signals.
ATM Backbone and STM-1 Regional Networks
Many regional or private networks do not need
Gigabit or Terabit services but a quickly deployed
and reliable service with the transport capacity of
microwave systems. When carrying ATM services,
the Nera InterLink solution will meet or excel
international performance recommendations.
Ring Closure and Back-up Links
Todays society depends more and more on
telecommunications and microwave radio offers
secure and reliable solutions. Radio networks do
not suffer from the long periods of outage that can
be experienced when a fibre optic cable is cut.
The Nera InterLink is therefore often chosen to protect
mission critical communication services.

Maximum adaptability
Changing needs often require expansion and reconfiguration
of the radio system. The Nera Interlink has been designed with
this in mind. The equipment mechanics are based on sub-racks
with a multi-configuration backplan. Equipment modules are
plug-in and expansion and reconfiguration are extremely easy.
The Nera InterLink is extremely compact with a very high
degree of module integration. Up to a total of eight STM-1

Large capacity from co-channel operation

The Nera InterLink obviates capacity problems caused by the
scarcity of bandwidth availability by operating in a co-channel
configuration. This effectively doubles the number of traffic
channels on the same frequency making the most of a
valuable resource. Transmission quality is maintained in
co-channel configuration by the adoption of Automatic
Transmitter Power Control (ATPC) and the advanced Cross
Polar Interference Canceller (XPIC). These features strongly
reduce the interference between signals. Neras fractionally
spaced XPIC technology is offering probably the worlds best
co-channel solution.
Further, Nera InterLink incorporates advanced equalisers
to compensate for variations in transmission conditions.
An adaptive slope equaliser at IF significantly improves the
signature curve, whilst an adaptive transversal equaliser at
baseband compensates for notches moving through the
spectrum with a speed of more than 100 MHz/s.

Exceeding international standards

Typical path lengths in temperate climate

The Nera InterLink solution ensures extensive path

lengths by offering a combination of diversity techniques.
The advanced combining algorithm, used in space diversity
systems, as well as the automated delay compensation,
ensures that the optimum signal is used. Combined with
frequency diversity techniques, long distance networks are
performing within excess of international standards.

The maximum path length depends strongly on climatic

conditions as well as the terrain topographic. Propagation in
the frequency bands used for trunk networking is typically
limited by multipath propagation. Propagation conditions
in the tropics are in general more difficult than in more
temperate areas.

Performance assured
Thanks to an automatic radio protection switching system,
Nera InterLink delivers continuously error-free transmission.
If any transmission problems occur, switching is instantly
activated to the protection channel with no loss of
transmitted data.
Nera InterLink handles up to 7 normal channels, plus 1
protection channel. In co-channel operation this doubles to
14 normal channels, plus 2 protection channels. It is a highly
flexible, easy-to-use system allowing specific switching criteria

to be set by the operator. The switching criteria includes

pre-error warning, early warning and BER alarms. The operator
has full control over the switching strategy, including defining
the BER thresholds of the alarms. The switching system
includes a manual switching function which allows the
operator to activate the switching actions for any terminal
by any station in the system. The switching system
includes an optional occasional traffic function, and
when the protection channel is not utilized in a
multiline system, it may carry low priority traffic.

Installation and management made easy

Setting up and maintaining the Nera InterLink is based on
flexible and convenient element manager function in the
Nera Element vieW (NEW). All the configuration of the system
is by software setting and the complete element configuration
can be stored on the NEW for download to new elements.
The Element manager includes a convenient Wizard function
guiding the maintenance and operation personnel for fast
and secure maintenance of the system. Software can be
downloaded to all units and the operator has full control over
the software version in operation. All units contain inventory
information such as unit codes and serial numbers as well
as information on unit history.
The Nera InterLink offers several data protocols for
management data communication networking, including
industry standard protocols such as TCP/IP and Qecc (OSI stack).
The Nera InterLink even offers routing of management traffic
from other equipment to its DCC channel. All designed to
make management data networking simple and easy-to-use.
