Name of the Program: FLASHMALL (A Flash mob at the Mall)

A flash mob or flashmob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place and perform an
unusual act for a brief time before quickly dispersing. They are often used for the purposes of
entertainment, satire, artistic expression or advertisement.
Need:
This program is designed to advertise SRC in the community and to register participants. As SRC is such a
great opportunity to motivate people to read and supports education, our main goal is to present this
program in an innovative way and create expectations in our community that ensure that reading is fun,
we all can read and reading is not an obligation.
Community Partners:
This program will happen in three Shopping Malls in our county, The Marley Station Mall, The Arundel
Mills Mall and The Westfield Annapolis Mall. We have had collaborative events with them during this
year.
Dates: Saturday, June 4 at Westfield Annapolis Mall @ noon
Saturday, June 11 at Marley Station Mall @noon
Saturday, June 18 at the Arundel Mills Mall @noon
We will consider inviting the press.
Set-up:
Most probably the programs will occur in the food court area. There will be a big table in the middle
(table for 15-20 people) with big books, newspapers, an iPod, a laptop, magazines, and a pile of different
books.
There will be another 3 tables at three different spots in the same food court area. These tables will
have the AACPL logo, registrations forms in English and Spanish, and prizes.
Also by each table well place a banner with the three slogans well use for SRC 2016 (1 slogan per
table). ON YOUR MARK, GET SETREAD, GET IN THE GAME, READ and EXERCISE YOUR MIND, READ.
The SRC (Summer Reading Club) Committee, POC (Programming and Outreach Committee), and
volunteers will be encouraged to participate in the flash mobs.
Description:
1. The recording starts (the first approx. 2 minutes of the recording will have voices of different
people (children, adults, teens, women, men) reading aloud excerpts from a newspaper, a
children book, a tweet, an email, a teen book, an adult book, a stanza of a song, a poem, a
recipe etc
2. During this recording 15-20 people will enter and sit at the middle big table, (they all will be
wearing SRC t-shirts), take a reading material and start reading.
3. Following the first 2 minutes of the recording a song will start. There is an initial beat for about
30 seconds and the people at the big table will join in.

4. The music of the recording will have the same music as (We will, we will rock you) with different
lyrics (We will, we will read now)
5. The people at the table will only join singing the main phrase, We will, we will, read now, and
the stanzas will be recorded (These stanzas will talk about the importance of reading in an
entertaining manner).
6. Lyrics(Example of two stanzas)

7. At the end of the song each person around the table takes a small sign that says READ and
stands up facing the crowd around them. There will be 10 signs that say READ and 10 more in
