Greys Anatomy

Relevant Background Information:

The observation that I took of Greys Anatomy (I also call it Greys within this
assignment) takes place in Seattle. The hospital is called Seattle Grace Hospital. There
is also a close hospital by called Mercy West Hospital. Sometimes patients from Mercy
get sent to Seattle because Seattle Grace is the bigger and better hospital. Seattle Grace
also is a trauma hospital. In my opinion, Seattle Grace would be the equivalent or better
of Wake Forest Baptist Hospital or Carolina Medical Center that we have here in North
Carolina. There are a lot of characters in the show of Greys. There are also a lot of
actors that are only there for the one show and we really never know their names or
really anything about them. There are 5 interns that just graduated Medical School that
are in the Seattle Grace surgical internship. There is a resident that is above them and
she seems to always be stressed out because she is over them and if something goes
wrong it is her fault. Greys Anatomy doesnt follow much of a story line, but the
romance always builds off each other on every episode. Its more of a romantic doctor
show.

Figured World: a large social form that has rules and regulations that is within the
appropriate behavior. The figured world is where everything takes place. Figured
worlds have their own way of behaving. Somethings might not be appropriate if it
was in another setting but a figured world has its own rules and conventions.
The figured world I am observing is Greys Anatomy. In this I will be looking
at how Greys is different then the actual medical field. Because I have spent ample
amount of time interning at hospitals, I can kind of see the difference. The place
where my figured world takes place is Seattle Grace Hospital. There really is no
business here besides health care because that is what goes on in a hospital. The
people who normally are at the hospital are the nurses, doctors, pharmacist, and of
course the patients. In the beginning of Greys, it mainly focuses on the surgery dept.
As the show develops more characters come on that are part of the surgery dept. but
they have specialized in other areas. Mainly because they arent interns anymore. So
a lot of things can take place. Not more than one patient can be in the surgery rooms
though, well because that goes against surgery protocol. Though I am not a doctor,

Greys Anatomy is totally different then real life. Ive never really heard of doctors
going to the call room and having sex in real life. But in Greys unfortunately it
probably happens every episode. Doing that would not be accepted in the real world
but in the figured world, it is okay. Also in the real world, doctors arent as blunt as
they are on Greys anatomy. On Greys, if youre dying, well they tell you that you
are dying. Where as in the real world they would be sincere about it. Also the
doctors flirt with each other a lot on Greys and normally doctors in real life
normally have a wife or husband.
Actors/Actresses: within the community, the actors and actresses play a specific role
to make the figured world make sense. The actresses are normally there for each
other and there to be a support figure. Sometimes the actors/actresses do have
conflict but just gives more to the show.
Meredith Grey- Meredith could be considered one of the top interns at
Seattle Grace. Merediths mother was an awesome surgeon and had many awards
for surgery. She was excellent. She had a actual surgery after her called the Greys
Method (Her mother now has Alzheimers and doesnt recall her surgical career.
Sometimes when Meredith goes to see her mother, her mother doesnt really
remember her either.) Meredith is in love with Derek Sheppard, which is an
attending doctor at the hospital. Meredith goes out of her way to make sure her
patients are okay and she sometimes dont always follow the rules.
Derek Sheppard- Dr. Sheppard is an attending neuro physician. (He is a
neurologist, which means he operates on the brain.) Sheppard actually has a wife,
Addison Sheppard but when the show first came on she was not in the show and
Sheppard fell in love with find out that Addison cheated on Derek and Derek moved
away from her. She comes in after Derek and Meredith have already fallen in love.
Derek then forgets about Meredith for a while and tries to fix his relationship with
his wife, which doesnt work in the end. Derek is a really good surgeon and is
recognized all over the world.
Alex Karev- Alex is also another surgical intern at Seattle Grace. Alex doesnt have
the best attitude and he can be sort of a mean person. He says what he thinks. He
doesnt care if it isnt the best thing to say or if it might hurt someones feelings.
Alex is really good with kids. He can calm kids down like no other. He just isnt
good with patients that he doesnt agree with what they are doing. Alex didnt pass
his boards the first time so he had to retake them. He passed the second time.
George OMalley- George is also a surgical intern. George lets a lot of people
influence him and his decision. George and Dr. Burks are really good friends now
because OMalley did a really crazy open-heart surgery in the elevator when the
elevator got stuck. Everyone praised OMalley afterwards but OMalley is a topnotch doctor to a lot of people. He gets thrown around a lot between doctors.
OMalley has a really hard time with relationships. He cant really keep them and

when he gets someone that actually likes him, he doesnt know how to treat them or
how to like them back.
Izzy Stevens- Izzy is also an intern in the surgical program. Izzy and Alex had a
thing but then Izzy fell in love with a patient. Izzy seriously risks everything for this
patient. She could have lost her license and everything else for what she does for the
patient. Izzy seems to be a very sweet soul. She doesnt really do anything
extraordinary so far but that doesnt mean that she isnt a great surgeon. Izzy
usually gets along with everyone and has great bedside manner.
Miranda Bailey- Dr. Bailey is a fun character for sure. She is a resident and she is
over the interns. She is called the Nazi because she is very strict and its her way or
no way. At first the interns are really scared of her and do everything exactly how
she says but as the show progresses, they kind of do what they want. Miranda seems
to be stressed out a lot because the interns do a lot of things that arent sociably
acceptable. But Miranda does have a kind heart and goes out of her way to make
sure her patients are doing well.
Addison Sheppard- Addison is an OB/GYN attending doctor. Addison is really nice
but gets annoyed with Derek and Meredith, well because Derek is her husband. She
cheated on Derek and she regrets it (or so she says) everyday. She is an awesome
doctor and is really good with her patients. Addison wasnt in the show when it
started but came in a few episodes later. She wants her and Derek to move back to
New York, but Derek is not having it.
Cali Torres- Cali is an attending orthopedic surgeon. Cali just came into Greys
Anatomy and has probably only been on two or so episodes. She has a love crush on
George but George doesnt really give her a chance.
Richard Webber- Richard is the best doctor at Seattle Grace. He is the Chief of
Surgery and everything has to go through him. Everyone loves Dr. Webber. He tries
to make sure that everyone that goes through makes everyone happy. He likes to see
people happy. Webber does the really hard surgeries and is always there in case
something happens.
Preston Burk- Dr. Burk is a cardiovascular surgeon. Which means he operates on
the heart. Christiana Yang and Burk have something going on. Burk goes out of his
way to make sure his patients are okay. He will preform surgeries that might not be
acceptable just because there might be a glimmer of hope for the patient.
Christiana Yang- Yang is an awesome surgeon. She always wants to be in the
hardest surgery. She doesnt
have a problem with doing hard
things. She is an awesome
doctor. She doesnt have very good
bedside manner at all though.

isnt one to let her emotions take over what she does at work.
Artifacts: can be actual objects, ideas and emotions within the figured world. A lot of
times within Greys it can be names. Names are really important like the one listed below
because it has an important role in the show.
McDreamy- McDreamy is what Derek Sheppard is called. This is important because
everyone calls Derek that. Meredith and even patients think that Derek is the best looking
thing ever.
Surgery Board- The surgery board is very important because its pretty much what the
whole show is based around. Any surgery that goes on, goes onto the board.
Medical Machines- All of the medical things are important because that is what the
doctors and nurses use. Thats normally how all the patients stay alive.
The On Call Room- The place of the on call room is important because thats normally
where all the romantic situations happen. They also happen at Merediths house but a lot
happen in the on call room and you dont normally see that during the day at a real life

Communities of Practice- three or more people who have common interests and
ways of communicating in the figured world. The people within usually interact
with the other groups as well. Sometimes they want to be apart of the other groups.
In this case, the interns are working to be residents and residents are working to be
attending doctors.
The interns- The interns are very important to the show because they are really
what the show is about. The interns are Meredith, Izzy, George, Christiana and
Alex.
The Residents- In this how you arent exactly sure who the Residents and
Attendings are. But the residents are very important because that is who is over the
Interns. Miranda and Cali.
The Attendings- These are the doctors that are actually doctors. They are the
ones that have been through all the schooling and internships. They are official
doctors. Burks, Derek, Addison and Richard.
Literacy Practices- way to communicate, can be written or spoken. In the show,
there are lots of face to face talking because in a hospital that is the main way of
communicating. While the pager is very important, face-to-face is the main one.

Pager- A lot of times within the show, the doctors communicate through the pager.
This is how they get the Code Blue which is where a patient is normally dying.
There are lots of Codes that come through the pager though. Code Black which
is when there has been a disaster in the area. Code Red when there is fire. Code
Grey is when someone is missing. Those are the main ones. The pager comes into
play a lot because if someone is needed, you page him or her. This is still used in
hospitals today. Pagers might consider Old School but they are still very
important.
Face-to-fact- there is a lot of face-to-face communications within Greys Anatomy.
With any show they are obviously going to be talking to each other.
Domain- A domain has an identity that is shared by everyone in the group or
community. A domain can also be defined as being a set of rules or a ruler. Domains
are usually powerful. The domain is only within the community. It doesnt know
things that are outside of the community. It might but its not going to know like it
knows the community.
Difficult Surgeries- all of the surgeons (interns, residence, and attendings) are all
very competitive. They all like to do really difficult surgeries so that they look better
and are considered to be a top surgeon. Christina Yang and Meredith Grey are
probably the most competitive interns where as Miranda Bailey is for the residents.
Healing the Patient- Obviously the main goal of being a doctor is making sure the
patient survives and heals. If this isnt a top priority I would be scared to go to that
doctor. Every doctor on Greys wants to make sure that their patient gets to leave
the hospital and doesnt die on them.
Practices of Communities- what is being done within the figured world. This is what
everyone is doing. This is extremely important within the figured world because it is
what is being done in the figured world.
Surgery- The whole figured world is based on the surgery aspect of the hospital. All
of the interns, residents, and attendings are there for surgery. The attendings are
specialized in the surgery categories where as the residents and interns are trying to
figure out where they fit in.
Romance- all of the surgeons are for some reason after romance. Romance is a big
thing within the show and kind of what the show is going around. It makes up a big
chunk of the show. This affects the show because one of the big things that the
audience is waiting for is to see who is going to fall in love next. The characters are
all involved in the love. Its what makes the characters who they are. We can
associate the characters a lot of times by who they are in love with.

Observation #1Blues for Sister Someone- Season 2; Episode 23

(1:00min means 1 minute into the episode)
1:00 min-(Merediths House) the episodes start out with a sex scene. This is common
way for greys anatomy to start off. Derek Sheppard is back with Addison, which is
real wife. He was with Meredith but Addison came to Seattle and was hired on at
Seattle Grace. This really bothers Meredith because she in love with Derek.
Meredith calls McDreamy (Derek) to ask if Derek could pick up the dog. (It was
Merediths dog but her roommates didnt want it at the house so she gave it to
Derek but she still takes care of it sometimes). He says yes but Addison gets on the
phone thinking that its the vet and she says can you call back later we are in the
middle of sex. This really upsets Meredith because she still is in love with Derek.
This is finally when she realizes that she is single and admits it.
3:00 min-(Hallway in hospital) Dr. Bailey just got back from maternity leave and
she is upset that her name is not in the surgery board. Christiana is mad at George
because George has moved in with Burks and Christiana. They are literally best
friends now. The vet asked Meredith if he would go on a date with her and she said
that she was giving up guys but she said that she is thinking about going on a date
with. His nickname is McVet Bailey has a patient that Izzy has fallen head over
heals for. Dr. Burks favorite violinist is at the hospital to get Dr. Burks to operate on
his pacemaker and remove it. But Dr. Burks had other plans because he doesnt
think that is a very good idea.

7:50min-(Patient Room/Hallway) Addison Sheppard has a new patient that is
pregnant women has 6 kids and she is 36 weeks pregnant. She wants it to be her last
kid. She has had enough but she knows that her husband wont be okay with it
because of there religion. She wants her tubes tide. Addison cant tell the husband
so the patient wants to pay it to herself directly to Addison without going through
insurance because then her husband would find out. Alex is with Addison with this
patient and he isnt very happy with what the patient is saying. He thinks that she
should tell her husband because he would understand.
11:00min-(Patient Room) Derek Sheppard gets a new neuro patient and she is a
divorce attorney and can pretty much see through about his marriage. Her being a
divorce attorney is actually very ironic because his marriage is really in the dumps.
Dr. Sheppard wants to induce a seizure so he knows where he can operate. George
falls for Cali until Cali starts liking him back. Why this is ironic is because Dr.
Sheppard could possible be going through a divorce soon and the lawyer can tell
that. So obviously Derek makes it extremely obvious.
13:58min-(Patient Room) the violinist that Burks likes plays for him so that Burks
can listen. The artist knows that he isnt good anymore so he asks Burks knows that
but he lies anyway. The artist knows that he is lying and calls him out on it. The
violinist talks to him about the first time he picked up a violin. Burks tells him that
he cannot remove it because of all the scar tissue that was built up. But artist
doesnt care and says that if Burks dont operate that he will go find another doctor
that will. Burks is really thinking about letting him go somewhere else because he
just doesnt think that he can do that. Christiana tries to talk him out of letting him
go somewhere else.
16:05min-(Dennys Patient Room) Denny, the guy that Izzy likes that is a patient,
gets the approval to get up and walk around. This scares Izzy because she is so
protective of him. Like extremely protective of him. You can tell that Izzy is head of
heals for this guy and she doesnt know him all that much. Bailey doesnt know
what is going on but she wants to know and she wants someone to tell her. Grey is
knitting these days. Bailey said maybe youre not stupid because Grey is giving up
on guys, or so Bailey thinks.

18:00min-(patient room)The interns are still trying to induce the seizure on the
divorce attorney and Addison tries to get patient to talk to her husband about
getting her tubes tied. She still refuses to because she knows that her husband will
be upset. Alex is being very mean and is very angry with this and the patient notices
it. Which makes sense because you would think that something that big would be
discussed by the husband and wife because it is an important factor in a
relationship.
20:30min-(Operating Room) Addison does the surgery on the pregnant women.
Addison says that while she was operating that there was extra bleeding and we
all know why she said that. So she could tie the womens tubes without it being like
she did it behind the husbands back. She ties her tubes and goes back to the women
and tells her There was a complication Alex isnt very happy about this at all. He
thinks that Addison is crazy and proceeds to tell the husband to get a lawyer.
22:30min-(Elevator in Hospital) Meredith gets on the elevator with Derek. This used
to be awkward for them right when Addison moved into town but now this is where
they do the most talking. She tells Derek that she is thinking about going on a date
with the vet. Derek doesnt really respond to this. Dereks patient is still trying to be
induced into a seizure and the way that the interns are trying to induce the seizure.
24:40-(Dennys patient room) Denny, Izzys lover, is getting ready to stand up and
get to use the new medical thing that he is hooked up to. Izzy does not like this. But
Denny is happy about this. He knows this is a step in the right direction to get
better. But Izzy cant protect him as much with this step forward because he can
actually get out of the bed for once. It is kind of like she doesnt want him to do
anything because she thinks he is fragile.
25:55min-(operating room) Burks is operating on the violin patient. Izzys friend is
going into v-tack. (Which is a bad heart thing) Birks is loosing the violin patient.
Izzy and George start arguing about Denny. Alex is actually being nice to his patient
and do the patients husband. (This isnt normal) Burks patient is literally nonexistent now but he wants to keep going because he really upset about losing him.
Dereks patient finally had her seizure. Denny came back around and was saved.

(He dies and gets saved a lot within this episode). Dr. Burks finally lets go of his
patient.
28:20min-(Dennys patient room) Meredith is talking to the guy that Izzy likes,
Denny. She is telling him that everything looks good now even after the horrible
episode that he just had. Grey then sits down and has a long talk with him about
Izzy. Denny then says, even if you cant do something you are going to do it
anyway and thats when Grey realizes that she still wants Derek even if he does
have a wife.
Observation #2Damage Case- Season 2; Episode 24
(1:00min means 1 minute into the episode)

1:00min-(laying in bed at McVets house) Meredith and the McVet are having a
conversation about cooking and McVet said that she is damaged. Meredith isnt
sure what he means by damaged and doesnt really know how to take it.
Afterwards, Izzy asks Meredith if she liked him and Izzy says that she is proud that
she hasnt actually slept with him yet. (Not saying that Meredith is a bad person, but
she does get around a lot.) Cali walks into the bathroom where Meredith and Izzy
are, naked. Meredith and Izzy dont think this is right and are kind of disgusted by
the fact that she did that. Since Cali done that, Meredith and Izzy wont leave
George alone about it.
3:20min-(outside of hospital) All of the interns are standing there and arguing and
Yang (who normally isnt ever happy and usually the Debbie downer) wants
everyone to be happy. She doesnt like that no one gets along anymore. She starts
dancing around which surprises all of the interns. McDreamy (Derek Sheppard)
walks up and asks Meredith how his dog was going. Meredith doesnt like that he
said that it was his dog. She looks at him and says that the dog is good but its our

dog not just yours. McDreamy walked away looking very annoyed. You can tell that
he is not very happy with Meredith at all and she doesnt really know why.
4:15min-(outside of hospital waiting on patients) The inters get there first patients of
the day and its some car crash victims that need to be cut open as Yang said.
Bailey is giving directions of where people should be going. The patients are a
husband, wife and wifes parents that were in the car crash. You can tell that the
wife and the wifes parents are extremely southern. The wife is pregnant and keeps
asking how her mom and dad are. The interns are getting a little annoyed because
the patients keep yelling back and fourth in the middle of the Emergency Room.
The mom starts putting on makeup while being checked out. The person that caused
the wreck also comes into the Emergency Room and the father goes at him to try to
beat him up but is stopped.
6:20min-(patient room in the Emergency Department) The mother needs a pelvic
exam and Alex is the intern that is with OB/GYN that day but the woman refuses to
let a man do her exam. She says that she doesnt have any panties on and she wants
a lady doctor. The guy that caused the accident is a surgery intern at the Mercy
West hospital, which is a neighboring hospital right down the road. It is shown that
Meredith has sympathy for this guy. Also, Meredith keeps trying to talk to Derek
but he is just not having it and keeps saying not right now. The mom and dad of
the wreck patients get discharged. They think that the husband and wife are doing
fine but they do need surgery.
7:50 min- (Emergency Room) Addison comes in asking why Alex wasnt up on the
surgery floor. He said because we got a 911 call in the Emergency Room of a
pregnant women in a car crash and I thought that was serious enough that she
needed to be checked out by us. Addison is trying to get back at Alex and tells him
that he get sto stay with the women all day and that Bailey is to make sure that Alex
does stay with her. Stevens gets to go into an orthopedic surgery but its with Cali
and she isnt too happy about that. Pregnant goes in for a CT scan. She is telling
them that today was her baby shower. She wont be quite.
9:05min- (Patient Room) George walks in on his patient reading his own chart.
(Remember, this was the surgical intern from Mercy West Hospital) George tells
him that is not a good idea for him to be looking at that. The patient goes on to say
that he wanted to know what caused him to cause the accident. Stevens gets with
Cali and she is still making fun of her for not washing her hands the other day.
Really, anything that Cali does wrong, Izzy is probably going to make fun of her.
Derek walks into the room that the surgical intern is in and starts yelling at
Meredith because she hasnt taken him up for a CT scan yet. Yang goes to ask Birk
if he has any heart patients that she could scrub in on. She is tired of the country
folk. He kind of ignores her and keeps going on with what he is doing. Turns out
that Birk was mad because when Yang and him were doing the dirty, Yang fell
asleep.

11:40min- (Stairway inside the hospital) Stevens gets called to Denny because he was
walking up to many stairs and collapsed. They get Denny back to the room and
Denny is really annoyed with his health. He says that Birk cannot make the
decisions for him and that it was his life. Birk argues back at him and tried to get
him to understand what is going on. They then start arguing about the heart
machine and Denny says that he wants to go home. Izzy is getting all worked up and
stressed about the things that Denny is saying.
13:40min- (CT Scan Room) Melody, which is the pregnant women, is in the CT scan
now. They are looking at the damages and seeing how bad everything is looking.
They page literally every surgeon in the different specialties because the woman is
literally bleeding out everywhere. The woman ends up crashing and they have to
bring her back. George has to go tells the womans husband what is going on. Plus
the country Mom and Dad. Her injuries are pretty bad.
15:30min-(Operating Room) All of the surgeons are working on this one patient.
Alex is watching the baby monitor but wishes he was doing something else actually
on the patient. George reassures the family that the doctors are going to do
whatever they can to help Melody out. Melody starts declining and bleeding out
very rapidly. They are all working very hard. They decide that it would be best just
do damage control which means that they get done quickly and once she reaches
the triangle they stop. The triangle is where the blood becomes acidic. After this
happens, they will just put her in the Intensive Care Unit where she will be wide up
with a warming thing over her. The surgical intern that caused the wreck realizes
what happened and why the crash occurred. He fell asleep at the wheel. He had
worked 18 hours and then watched a 12-hour surgery. While Meredith is talking to
the CT technician, the guy runs away because he finds out that the women might
die.
18:50min- (Dennys hospital room) Izzy tries to cheer Denny up but it is not
working. Denny is very upset. He starts talking to her about her not understanding.
He is a man but he doesnt feel like a man with his weak body that he has to deal
with. Melody still isnt doing very well at all. They have reached the triangle as this
point, which means everyone has to stop. They dont close her. They left her open
and put her in the ICU. Merediths patient was found in the surgery overview
watching what was happening.
21:10min- (Stairway in the hospital) Derek starts yelling at Meredith and tells that
she needs to start taking responsibility for her actions. He doesnt understand how
she could lose the patient. Derek looks very upset. Bailey explains to Melodys
family of what they are doing and why. Addison then chimes in. Bailey explains that
Melody would die if they took her back into surgery too quick and that she would
die of they take her back to late. The mom looks very upset and confused. Alex is
still forced to sit there and watch the fetal monitor. Addison fuses at him because

she wants him to understand the importance of sitting there and making sure that
the baby is okay.

24:20min-(Patient Room) Cali is in the room with the husband and George comes in
to tell her that he found Izzy and one of her patients needed her and that is why she
didnt prep the surgery room like Cali told her to. Cali gets mad and says she knew
that George would take up for her and then Cali walks out of the room. The patient
is awake and makes fun of George. George asks the patient if he understands whats
going on with Melody. He starts crying because she could be dying and he doesnt
want to think about it.
27:20min- (Hallway outside of patient room) the surgical intern from Mercy West
wants to apologize to the family. Derek doesnt think that is a good idea. Meredith
chases after Derek and Derek tells her that she gets around and Meredith says that
she should have told him anything. She thought that they were friends. But doesnt
look like they are. Derek is really mad about what Meredith did with the Vet.
Meredith brings up the point that he chose Addison over her. Derek tells Meredith
that everything that their friendship is over.

Observation #317 Seconds- Season 2; Episode 25

(1:00min means 1 minute into the episode)
.60min- (At the Bar) Most of the interns and doctors are at the bar and Birk is
throwing darts and Yang says that Birk is thinking about her skull while throwing
the darts. Meredith and Derek make an awkward eye contact and Izzy says that
Derek is throwing darts at Merediths skull. Derek finally said that he thought
Meredith was a whore.
1:30min- (In the Hospital) Izzy makes fun of Alex for being a Gynecologist. George
and Cali walk in and they are all super excited about seeing George but no one
really likes Cali. Meredith and Derek meet with Vet and Addison asks if they are
still friends. Derek and Meredith both just look at each other and say no very
quickly. Yang tries to talk to Birk about going with him to get a heart but Birk
wont let her. He still seems to be mad at her for falling asleep during intercourse.
3:30min-(Emergency Room) The interns get patients that have been involved in a
shooting at a store. The women is mad because her fianc ducked behind her as the
shooting was going on. He tells her that the bullet hit them both but she says she has
whole through her arm so he needs to shut up. Cali and Meredith are actually
working together. Meredith seems like she can get along with anyone and doesnt

really have enemies. Another patient is questioning Izzy and asks if she knows what
she is doing. She then gives him a long speech about how he is probably the reason
the place was shot up. She tells him that he needs to be more serious because people
were actually hurt in the shooting.
6:00min- (Emergency Room Hallway) The shooter has not been caught yet so they
think that there may be more people to be shot but Webber insist that Birk continue
on to get the heart. Alex and Yang both want to go so Birk has to make a decision.
They are both running to the helicopter. Birk lets Alex get on the case with him.
This makes Yang so very upset. Denny is the lucky patient that gets the heart.
7:30min- (Walking down the hall) Izzy wants to get on the case with Denny. She
says she knows more about his lab and his heart then anyone does. Bailey doesnt
like this idea. Izzy keeps pushing and finally Bailey gives in. Derek is really upset
about this 19 year old getting shot. The girl is also pregnant. The guy that Izzy gave
the speech to is now talking to his friend Chug about how he should have went to
management because he would get covered. Chug wants more morphine because the
guy wont shut up and is really bugging him. Cali jumps on Meredith and Meredith
isnt sure why.
10:00min- (Dennys Hospital Room) Izzy walks in and tells Denny that he is getting
the heart. Denny makes her repeat it multiple times. Then Izzy finds out that Denny
is wanted to sign DO NOT RESITUTATE papers. Izzy is extremely upset about
this. Denny just doesnt know if the heart will actually come though or not. If he
doesnt get the heart, he said he is through fighting. He said he cant do it anymore.
Izzy refuses to let him make this decision but she really cant do that. Denny said he
would choice heaven rather then being on earth.
13:00min- (Mercy West Hospital) Birk gets to Mercy Wests and finds out there are
two hearts that are perfect matches. Birk explains to Alex that the hearts are
already assigned so they cant just pick which one that they want. Birk and of his
old classmates that dont seem to like each other, talk about being first in class. Birk
walks in the operating room to find that his heart donor has crashed and he has to
try to bring him back. He cant therefore the heart is useless now.
15:00min-(Pre-Operation Room) Birks runs into his classmates surgical room and
wants the heart she has. She is not happy about it and calls him pathetic.
15:50- (Nurses Station and Conference Room) Meredith asks Cali about bone
cancer in a dog. She wanted to know the survival rate and Cali freaks out because
they have a patient that may never walk again and Meredith is worried about her
dog. Birk and his colleague are still fight about who should get the heart. 17 seconds
is the time between when both patients that need to receive the heart were admitted.
Birks colleague should get it because her patient was there first.

17:30min- (Dennys Hospital Room) Izzy starts freaking about learning that Denny
might not get the heart. Addison asked if Meredith and Derek had a problem
(again) and this time Meredith tells her that she is dating the Vet and that she has
nothing with Derek. Izzy lies to Birk to Denny moved up on the list in front of the
other patient. Transplant personnel says that Birk has an hour to prove that his
patient needs the heart worse.
20:20min-(Operation Room) Derek is working on patient and pronounces her brain
dead before he really even gets started. They go to tell the patient parents, and the
parents end up wanting to get the girl alive on life support so that they can save the
baby. The manager guy down in the Emergency Room still hasnt shut up. Bailey
is fed up with it and freaks out on him telling him that everyone was tired of hearing
his mouth.

22:10-(Walking down the hallway) Yang is complaining about Birk not letting her
on a surgery case this week just because he is still mad at her. Izzy admits to friends
that she lied to Birk about Denny and made him seem worse then he really is. Yang
tries talking to her about doing the right thing and waiting on another heart but
Izzy refuses to understand. Out of everyone, Yang thinks Izzy would be the one to
go bat crazy and shoot up the hospital.
24:00min-(Dennys Hospital Room) Izzy tells Denny that the guy that was supposed
to give the heart to him did not survive and to get the other heart, Denny would
pretty much need to die. She told him not to worry because she would be right there
and would not let him die. Denny said that he was not okay with that and it was not
happening. Izzy fights back and says that she will make it happen no matter what.
Denny is freaking out on Izzy because she is literally being crazy. Izzy still pushes
back. Izzy explains that the difference was only 17 seconds and that he needs this
heart. Denny cant get Izzy to understand. Izzy makes it about herself and asks
what about her. She continuously begs.

27:50min- (hallway in hospital) Cali and George are talking. He explains that Yang,
Meredith and Izzy are family. If she wants to be apart of the family she has to be
okay with that too. Birk explains that the testing and what he has to do for Denny
shouldnt take long. Then Izzy explains to Birk that she is going to do something but
doesnt tell him what. The transplant people are confused as to what is going on and
so is Birk so he decides that he is going to go back to Seattle and check on Denny
himself.
Interview- By: Shelby Thompson, Freshman. Shelby is 18 years old and is a female.
She loves Greys Anatomy and watches it all the time.

1. What different approaches do you think Shonda Rhimes could have done
to make show more relatable to the actual Medical Field?
I understand the actual procedures done within the show are not
accurate. If Shonda had the goal to portray how the actual hospital is
run, she should have taken out some of the drama. The social aspect of
the hospital is not the same as a realistic one. The way some of the doctors
speak to the patients or how leisurely the chief of surgery is with the rules
is much more lenient than what would happen in a hospital in our world.
2. Describe how you would write the script of Greys Anatomy if you were
the director.
I would write the script very similar to how Shonda has. Personally, I
would be sure to include realistic information about how a hospital is run.
Since I plan to go into the medical field I would help, as many people
understand it as possible.
3. Reflect on what you think of Greys Anatomy.
Although the practice medicine is incorrect throughout the series, I found
Greys Anatomy to be quite intriguing. It had many incidents where is
brought real-word problems into perspective. The newest episode showed
how same-sex relationships were evolving. I may not agree with the
morality of some of these situations but I respect Rhimes for including
such important scenarios happening in our daily lives.
4. Has Greys Anatomy influenced you wanting to go into the Medical Field?
If no, why? If yes, why?
If I am being completely honest, when I was in the heart of Greys I
wanted to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. I had just had a metal plate
put in my collarbone and the idea of mending someones broken body
back to where it needed to be was enticing. I slowly realized how much
school and money that would cost and result back to my original plan of
becoming a Physical Therapist. It was inspiring to see the way that
Arizona recovered because I knew that I wanted to give that feeling to

others. Greys showed me a prime example of how rehabilitation could
completely change someones life and how much joy it could bring them.
5. Why do you think Shonda Rhimes puts so much romance within the
show?
I think Rhimes understood that not all of the medicine practiced was
accurate. She needed something that took the show to a new level, letting
people overlook the errors pertaining to the medical field. The drama is
what makes the show and without it the medicine would have to be spot
on.
Interview from a Guy About Greys Anatomy: By: William Kent, Freshman.
William is 19 years old. He hates Greys Anatomy and only time he watches it is
when he is forced to by his girlfriend. He doesnt like many TV shows.
1. How do you feel about Greys Anatomy?
I am not the biggest fan of it. I think its more of girly show. One of my
friends wanting me to watch it with him saying that it was good but I never
got interested in it. I love the medical field and this show is a lot of false hope
for the medical field.
2. How do you feel about the romance of Greys Anatomy?
I guess that is the part that I dont like about it. I think that is what makes it
girly and makes a lot of guys not want to watch it. It has a lot of surgical
parts that could be interesting but in the next scene is goes back to the
romance part of it.
3. Do you think you would do well at writing the script for Greys Anatomy?
I dont think I would be well at it. Since a lot of girls watch the show, I dont
think I would write it like they want it. Shonda Rhimes does a fantastic job at
appealing to what the girls want.

Question- What would you like to see happen on Greys Anatomy?
Answers1. I would like to see Meredith and Derek to stop arguing so much and actually
get married. I think that would act an extra spunk to the show that is needed
because right now on every episode they end up arguing every time.
2. I would like to see Greys Anatomy to relate more to the medical show. Since
it is considered a medical show that should actually show what its like. The
romance and stuff is fine but little more actual medical things would be nice.

3. Honestly I dont think they need to add or change anything to Greys

Anatomy so far. I absolutely love this show and it I get so excited to be able to
watch it.
