Job summary
Primary Role

Dstl Policy and Capability Studies Department Strategic Analysis Group is seeking to recruit a senior
analyst to join its Influence Analysis team to lead on the analysis and advice to the military customer on
the implementation of influence and information operations
This post will focus on international relations / strategic studies with particular regard to improving the
exploitation of research and analysis into practical methods of influence analysis and information
operations analysis that will be of high practical benefit to operational commanders.

Essential Functions
Responsibilities

1. Draw on specialist knowledge of influence (and information) operations to analyse, structure and
solve problems in order to contribute to complex defence and security issues.
2. Apply and, where necessary, develop multi-disciplinary scientific analysis techniques drawing on the
human, social and political sciences as well as more conventional operational research (OR) techniques
e.g. problem structuring methods, computer models/simulations, gaming and spreadsheets.
3. Provide guidance to higher level decision makers based on the output of analytical studies.
4. Lead or make a significant contribution to writing technical reports and delivering presentations to
customers.

5. Provide technical leadership for other studies as tasked.
6. Convey complex and unusual ideas in a clear and concise way.
7. Maintain a watching brief on relevant areas of interest in the global security environment.
Educational & Experience Requirements
(Include educational requirements or equivalency, type(s) of experience and necessary licenses or
certificates specifying which are essential and which are desirable.)
Essential:
1. Thorough knowledge of UK and allied military doctrine on military influence operations.
2. Good awareness of current defence and security issues.
3. Proven record as a good team member with excellent communication skills.
4. Ability to organise/prioritise own workload effectively and where appropriate those of others.
Desirable:
1. Recent experience of the planning, conduct and assessment of military influence operations e.g.
from Iraq or Afghanistan.
2. Experience of high level analysis and strategic planning.
3. An understanding of how military commanders and other MOD customers use scientific and
analytical advice.
4. Knowledge of OR with experience of relevant qualitative and/or quantitative analysis tools and
techniques to analyse problems and provide solutions, e.g. spreadsheets, databases, content analysis
tools, computer simulations or network visualisation and analysis tools
5. A good honours degree or equivalent academic or professional qualification.

Scope & impact
The wider role is to undertake research and analysis to help our customers better understand the
complex human environment of current defence and security issues and to identify the role of UK
Defence and Government in shaping that human environment through military activity and counter-
terrorism policy. The output of the team supports MOD customers and commanders leading current
military operations. Other government customers include the Home Office and the security services.
Additional work involves providing key underpinning research for the other teams in the Group including
geo-strategic policy decisions, concept development, support to strategic planning and risk analysis.
Other disciplines employed in the Group include operational research (OR), intelligence analysis,
anthropology, psychology, management science, geography, law, political science and theology.
