This paper presents the design of microstrip patch

antenna with center frequency at 2.4 GHz for WiMAX
and WLAN application. The patch with microstrip line
feeding technique was designed and simulated using
HFSS tool. The patch antenna designed on Roger5880
subtractwith size of 51.58 X 58 X 1.6 mm3 and dielectric
substrate with r =2.2. Circular slot on patch has been
introduced for getting better return loss. This paper
present comparative studies of simple patch antenna and
patch antenna with circular slot.

DESIGN OF MICROSTRIP PATCH

ANTENNA

In this paper, the microstrip patch antenna has been

designed to operate at a center frequency of 2.4 GHz
with an input impedance of 50 using a dielectric
material Roger5880 with r =2.2, tangent loss tg=0.009
and thickness (h) of 1.6 mm. For microstrip antennas,
the dielectric constants are usually in the range of
2.2< <12 . The most popular models for the
analysis of microstrip patch antennas are the
transmission line model, cavity model and full wave
model. The transmission line model is the simplest of all
and it gives good physical insight but it is less accurate.

INTRODUCTION

Modern wireless communication system [3][4][5][6]requires

low profile, light weight, high gain, and simple structure
antennas to assure reliability, mobility, and high
efficiency characteristics.Microstrip antenna satisfies
such requirements. Antenna plays an important role in
communication system. An antenna is a device that
converts a signal transmitted from a source to a
transmission line into electromagnetic waves and that is
used to broadcast into free space and vice versa. An
antenna is concentrating the radiation energy in some
directions and to suppress it in the other directions at
certain frequencies. An antenna must me tuned to the
same frequency band of the radio system to which it is
connected; otherwise the reception and the transmission
will be impaired. A good antenna design can improve
overall performance of the system which is depending
on the physical size.[1]
Antennas play an important role in todays wireless
communication. Without the use of antenna, signals are
not able to be transmitted out or received. The antenna
designer must also consider the electrical characteristics
of the antenna which include: Return loss, Bandwidth,
Gain and radiation pattern, Operating frequencies,
VSWR. In this paper thecomparison of
the simple
microstrip patch antenna and modified microstrip patch
antenna is presented. The simulation of the proposed
antenna has been carried out using Ansoft HFSS
software.

By using the above parameter we design a simple

microstrip patch antenna with the help of HFSS tool,
which is shown in figure 2, and there simulation result
is shown in figure 3, shown clearly shows that there
maximum return loss is -3.71 at 2.32GHz. Thus its
performance and gain is reduced, so it is less efficient for
the communication system.

MODIFIED MICROSTRIP PATCH

ANTENNA

In this paper, our aim to increase the performance of an

antenna for use in WIMAX and WLAN communication
application. The resonance frequency of the designed
antenna is 2.4GHz figure 3 demonstrates that return loss
is -3.71 at 2.32GHz. So to improve the performance and
gain all the dimensions are unchanged but we add a
circle [5] on the patch of radius 20mm shown in figure 4.

The patch antenna with circular slot improves the

performance of antenna and gives us maximum return
loss of -16.0177 at 2.38GHz (shown in fig. 5) which is
much better than simple patch antenna.

RESULT

In this paper , we design a circular patch antenna and

compare with the simple patch antenna , the
modification antenna is design without changing the
parameter which is shown in Table 1 and Table 2 and
there simulation camparision result is shown in Figure 6
, which shows that the modified patch antenna is much
better than simple patch antenna.

CONCLUSION

The microstrip patch antenna is most widely used

antenna design in the WiMAX communication system.
In this paper, we have increased the performance of the
antenna such as gain and return loss. We do some
modification here without changing the dimension of the
microstrip patch antenna. This great performance is
achieved by modifying the structure of the patch
antenna. The improved design gives us the maximum
return loss -15.91dB , which greatly helps to enhance
the performance of the antenna so that it can be
efficiently used in the WiMAX and WLAN
communication system and other application.
