What are the three criteria necessary for an effective and efficient network?

Privacy(),Reliability(

),Security()
What is difference between half- duplex and full- duplex transmission modes? Half- duplex:
Bidirectional, each station can both transmit and receive, but not at the same time.Full - duplex:
Bidirectional, both stations can transmit and receive simultaneously.
Name the four basic network topologies ,and cite an advantage of each type?
Mesh Topology: Each nodes is connected to each other, Better reliability, security, privacy ,but expensive
Star Topology: Each device has a link to the hub (central controller), Less expensive, one port and one
connection for a node.
Bus Topology: Only one backbone connects the nodes, Less expensive.
Ring Topology: One backbone connects all the nodes. Repeater can amplify the signal along the ring. Easy
fault recovery
Assume six dives are arranged in a mesh topology. How many cables are need ?How many
ports are needed for each device? 6(6 - 1)/2=15 duplex physical links are needed for fully connection.
Each node needs (6-1) =5ports.
For each of the following four networks, discuss the consequences if a connection fails?
A. Five devices arranged in a mesh topology? ,,
Five devices arranged in a star topology? HUB ,
Five devices arranged in a bus topology? , Five
devices arranged in a ring topology? ,,
Draw a hybrind topology with a ring backbone and two bus networks.

CH2-4 What is the difference between network layer delivery and transport layer delivery?
Network layer delivery is transfer packets from source to destination (across multiple links and/or multiple
networks)Transport layer delivery is transfer segment end-to-end from process in a machine to process in
another machine
CH2-9 What are the responsibilities of the data link layer in the Internet model?Transfer frames
from one hop node to the next-hop node (across a direct link) Physical addressing: header of the frame to
define the sender/receiver
CH2-12 What is the difference between a port address, a logical address, and a physical
address? Port address can identify the associated process.Logic Address (IP address) for network layer,
Logical address in the Internet is currently a 32-bit address that can uniquely identify a host in the
Internet. IPv4 , 32 IPv6 128 Physical Address
is MAC address, Link address for data link layer, Each network interface card (NIC) is assigned a physical
address.
CH2-16 Match the follow to one or more layers of the OSI model:Route determinatio Flow
control ()Interface to transmission media Provides access for the end user

CH2-20
CH2-21
CH2-25 If the data link laye r can detect errors between hops, why do you think we need
another checking mechanism at transport layer? Frame , Frame ,
Segment , Segment
CH3-5 Distinguish between baseband transmission and broadband transmission.
Baseband transmission :sending a digital signal over a channel without changing the digital signal to an
analog signal, baseband transmission requires a low-pass channel, the spectrum starting from zero.
Broadband transmission: need to convert the digital signal to an analog signal before transmission,
Broadband transmission requires a band-pass channel, the spectrum starting not from zero.
CH3-8 the Shannon capacity have to do with communications? C = Wc log2 (1 + SNR) bps
,
CH3-26 What is the bandwidth of the composite signal shown in Figure 3.36 5*5=25Hz
CH3-29 A Tv channel bandwidth of 6 MHz. If we send a digital signal using one channel, what
are the data rates if we use one harmonic, three harmonics, and five harmonics?
One harmonic:N/2=6MHz N=12Mbps Three harmonics:3N/2=6MHz N=4MbpsFive

harmonics:5N/2=6MHz N=2.4Mbps
CH3-40 A signal with 200 milliwatts power passes through 10 devices, each with an average
noise of 2 microwatts. the SNR? the SNRdB? SNR=200/2*10=10000 SNRdB=10*log10(SNR)=40Db
CH3-44 channel with 4KHz bandwidth. If we want to send data at 100Kbps,what is the
minimum SNRdB? What is SNR? 4K* SNRdB/3=100K SNRdB=75 10log10SNR=75
SNR=107.5=31662776.6
CH3-47 How many bits can fit on a link with a 2ms delay if the bandwidth of the link is
a. 1Mbps? 1Mbps*2ms=2000bits10Mbps? 10Mbps*2ms=20000bits100Mbps?
100Mbps*2ms=200000bits
