General Information

„ Pakistan has a total area of 796096 square kilometer.

„ Population is more than 160 million.

„ The size of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased three times from Rs
2,938 billion in 1998-99 to Rs 8,716 billion in 2007-08.

„ The economy has grown on an average of 7.5 percent over the last four years
2003-2006.

„ Per capita income increased more than two times from $ 438 to $ 928 IN THE
same period.

„ Investment has increased by five times from Rs 409 billion to Rs 2,004 billion.

„ On the basis of rapid and sustained growth achieved in the recent past,
Pakistan has joined the fastest growing economies of the Asian region.

MTDF TARGETS
„ The Government of Pakistan had launched the
Medium Term Development Framework in
2005 a medium term plan for period of
implementation from 2005-10. The Government
recognizes the importance of improving and
expanding infrastructure services for economic
and social development in its MTDF.

MTDF ALLOCATIONS

„ An allocation of Rs.248 billion was


earmarked for the road development
programme, including Rs.217 billion
under the public sector and Rs.31
billion under the private sector /
public private partnership financing.
„ Out of Rs. 217 billion a sum of Rs.
117 billion (US$ 1.95 billion) was
earmarked for NHA.

Conclusion

‰ The Government of Pakistan is ardent to improve its communications

network by 2014 which also includes Asian Highway routes which are main

arteries.

‰ Projects worth 0.5 billion US $ identified under MTDF for PPP/ BOT

Financing are still in pipeline. GoP/ MoC provides all assistance to

international investors to invest in these projects in Pakistan.

‰ Under MTDF+NTCIP NHA portfolio for 2007-14 amounts to Rs 350 billion

including GOP component of Rs 150 billion. The average requirement per

year ranges from Rs 43 to 56 Billion.

‰ All Contracts under NTCIP would be executed through International

bidding.

‰ This provide an opportunity to International Consultants/ Contractors to

take part in these projects.
