Mastering the art of project finance,
from initial agreement to completion

On the Project and Infrastructure Finance

programme, you gain a complete
overview of how project finance works,
why companies might use it, and when to
choose it over corporate finance. Analysis
of case studies* lead to an understanding
of the different ways companies use
project finance, and how they structure,
value and finance projects. Each days
learning builds on the next so that, at
the end of the programme, you have a
wide set of skills and knowledge, plus the
confidence to use project finance to add
value to your own organisation.
Actionable insights
Project and Infrastructure Finance deals
can and do go wrong. Knowing why, and
what to do about it, is vital to your total
understanding of the subject. You learn
to identify the factors that can derail
projects, and how to go about
successfully restructuring a project
that is in distress.
By looking at examples of large-scale
projects, you identify frameworks for using
project finance, such as the factors
considered by sponsors and lenders when
assessing project finance structures. You
examine how to assess and allocate risks
and rewards, and identify the challenges of

forecasting for long-term projects and

ensuring the alignment of all stakeholders
interests. You also explore how to deal with
the difficulties of valuing highly leveraged
projects.
Hands-on experience
In a series of assignments, you test out
what youve learned from the lectures
and guest speakers. You analyse what
the risks were in each case, assessing
the value of projects and pinpointing
the factors that made a deal succeed
or fail, then present your findings
and recommendations. For your final
assignment, you assess a real-life solar
power project to decide whether you
would make the loan. These practical
exercises give you the toolkit and the
confidence to apply to your own projects
back at work.
Project finance also has a key role to
play in emerging markets. Discover the
distinctive issues that arise in these
regions, such as how governments can
use project finance to gain multinational
sponsors. You focus, too, on the specifics
of Public Private Partnerships and Private
Finance Initiatives.

Project finance taught from both business and

Learning in London
London Business Schools

component of the learning

full advantage of our
connections to the Citys

Spotlight on learning
Practical exercises to build skills
Real-life scenarios are a key
component of the programme.
Participants examine a series of case
studies, analysing and discussing key
aspects of each one. These give you the
opportunity to practise the skills involved
in project finance. You identify the issues
and challenges of specific projects, look
at how to value and structure the deal,
and ultimately decide what you would do
if faced with a similar project.

Wisdom from experience

The
programme features expert
guest speakers who share their
experiences of project finance and the
tools and techniques they use. Energy
and Infrastructure Consultant Martin
Blaiklock, for example, has undertaken
project assignments worldwide,
particularly in emerging markets. He offers
insights from the frontline into what makes
a deal succeed or fail, and explains how
to spot both opportunities and pitfalls.

Stimulating debate and

shared
experiences
Londons status as the worlds leading
financial capital means your peers on
the programme are highly experienced
professionals from around the world. A
collaborative atmosphere gives everyone
the opportunity to share insights and
experiences. The greater understanding
of different cultures and ways of working
that you gain is invaluable to large-scale
projects with multiple stakeholders.

How it worked for me

How does the programme benefit participants and their
organisation? We let one past participant tell you

Our group was a

veritable UN with
participants from
Brazil, Qatar,
Morocco, Portugal
and Australia.
Antonio Correia-Sampaio, (Brazilian)
Senior Manager, Oil and Gas, Wipro
Technologies
My initial reasons for joining this
programme stemmed from a desire
to understand more about the subject
generally. I also had a specific interest
in learning how to structure financial
transactions.
I have a business consulting role at
Wipro that involves analysing the needs
of the organisation and translating them
internally to the IT team. My current job
doesnt require a great deal of in-depth
finance knowledge, but I wanted to round
out my financial skill-set and professional
expertise in anticipation of more senior
positions to come.
London Business Schools programme
appealed partly because of the London
base it was hugely convenient to be
able to hop on the Tube and be in class
in 20 minutes. The School also has a
great brand, and the fact that it has a
strong finance portfolio and faculty was
a big incentive. I was lucky enough to
have the time and the inclination to study
something that really interested me, so I
took the opportunity and went for it.
One thing that really struck me about
the programme was the strength and
depth of the class network. It was
great to interact with people from such
diverse backgrounds. Everyone brought
their own views and experiences to the
07

www.london.edu/pif/

table, creating an engaging dynamic

which meant that, even though we were
covering a good deal of work, the long
days went by in a flash.
I met a range of very interesting people
across different industries our group
was a veritable UN with participants from
countries as far afield as Brazil, Qatar,
Morocco, Portugal and Australia. I also
managed to make a number of new
contacts on the technology front, which
was a totally unexpected benefit.
We had different professors teaching
across a range of topics no two days
were the same, and I felt very privileged
to have such a variety of viewpoints
to consider. Different faculty looked at
project finance problems from different
angles. I found the class with Christopher
Hennessy particularly interesting because
of his quantitative approach and focus on
the use of option modelling to ascertain
the assets value at the end of a project.
He was also very helpful in providing me
with additional articles to read.

Even though I hadnt identified specific

takeaways in advance of the programme,
one benefit is that it really helped to
coalesce my ideas. I now approach
engagements with a more structured
way of thinking, enabling me to order
things more effectively in my mind.
This alignment happened not so much
because of the course content itself, but
as a result of discussions and interaction
between classmates and professors.
Project finance is an area that I enjoy; it
also has good synergies with oil and gas.
Ive achieved what I wanted and improved
my skill-set. As well as understanding the
information technology that enables oil
and gas to be produced, I now have a
better grasp of how the financial aspects
of large-scale projects work. I have proper
frameworks to use and, because Im able
to talk with greater confidence about
financial issues, I have more credibility.
Within Wipro and with my clients, I
have more weight as a well-rounded
professional who understands different
facets of the business.
