E. Teaching Methodology, course requirements and evaluation

This Course will be handled by two Lecturers who will facilitate a number of topics separately. The
revision classes, tests and examinations will be handled jointly. The instructors will use a variety of
teaching methods including the lecture method and seminar style method (involving class discussions),
with a bigger emphasis on the lecture method but students will take their own notes throughout the
semester. Lectures will be supplemented by tutorials.
Students are encouraged to attend all the classes and prepare for class by reading in advance especially
the relevant cases and parts of the laws. This is a largely case based subject and students are encouraged
to find and read the cases provided on the reading list.
Student will be assessed at two levels; course work and examination. Course work constitutes 30 percent,
while examination accounts for the 70 percent of the marks. It should be noted that out of the 30 marks
for coursework, 10 marks will be reserved for class attendance and class participation.
Lecturers may or may not share with students skeleton hand outs/ notes. This will be accompanied by
reading list, class discussions, home works, assignment, a test and an examination.
F. Expected Learning Outcome, Assumptions.
The successful completion of this course is partial fulfilment of your bachelors of law Degree. The course
will offer you skills, knowledge and expertise to handle legal (procedure) issues within the criminal law.
Furthermore, since all those are derived from the constitution, the skills and knowledge gained in this
course will not only help you understand the vital legislation, but also assist you interpret the law more
broadly.
In a nut shell, this course should contribute to the following critical outcome:
a) Identify and solve problems.
b) Collect, analyse and evaluate information
c) Communicate effectively
d) Recognise problem solving contexts
e) Reflect on and explore effective learning strategies
f) Critique existing legal rules
g) Work with a detail major statutes governing most of the law on given subjects.
Prior to studding this course, the assumption is that student has been exposed to the idea of legal
principles (legal theory, constitutional law, interpretation of statutes). Also that the student has the ability
to read and interpreted statute law and decided cases in law reports, and apply the law president.
Important therefore is the ability to analyse a set of fact, identify th legal problem contained therein, apply
the appropriate law to derive a solution.

As a procedural (adjectival) law subject, this course equips the student to apply the substantive criminal
law in courts in Uganda. It also has close ties with the law of Evidence.
NOTE: this outline will always remain tentative. Texts and cases included in this outline form a small
fraction of what is expected from an average law student. Independent effect should make to unearth
more relevant case and texts. Students should specifically familiarise themselves with the existing law
reports (both local and foreign)
