Find the equation of a line with slope 3 and y-intercept -7

think y=mx+b: what is m and what is b

a y = 2x + 10
b y = 3x + 10
c y = 3x + 7
d y = 3x 7
e none of these

Find the equation of a line with slope 3 that passes though the
point (0, 10)

think y=mx+b: if we plug in what we know,

y=(

)x+b

then remember that (0, 10)=(x, y); it represents an x and y value

(

)=(

)(

)+b

then we should be able to do some algebra to find b!

a y = 2x + 10
b y = 3x + 10
c y = 2x + 7

d y = 3x + 7
e none of these

10

Find the equation of a line that passes though the points (6, 2)
(4, 3)

think y=mx+b: we need m and b!

how do we find m?: m =

y2 y1
x2 x1

think y=mx+b again: we know m and dont have b

from here well repeat the same steps from the last problem!
y=(

)x+b

then remember that (6, 2) & (4, 3) represent pairs of x and y values; pick
your favorite point and go from there:
(

)=(

)(

)+b

then we should be able to do some algebra to find b!

a y = 2x + 10
b y = 32 x + 10
c y = 12 x 1
d y = 3x + 7
e none of these

Solve the following system of equations:

4x + y = 1
2x y = 1
when you see something like this, you should immediately ask whether anything
would cancel if I were to add or subtract these equations straight down...
then I add/subtract these equations, I get an equation that will let me solve
for x or y

x =
y =

Solve the following system of equations:

4x
+ y= 1
y = 3x 1
when you see something like this, you should immediately ask whether anything
would cancel if I were to add or subtract these equations straight down...
if NOT... then we should ask if we can use SUBSTITUTION to solve this
system (for this problem youd plug in the second equation into the first)

Solve 3x2 5x 2 = 0

The first thing we should think of is that theres an x2 (so wed call this a
quadratic, but more importantly...) this problem involves FACTORING! Remember the method we talked about:
Well look at this equation (which looks like ax2 +bx+c) as having three numbers
involved: The first, a; the second b; and the last number c
method for factoring these is as follows:
1) Multiply the first (3) and last (-2) numbers, (3) (2) = 6
2) Think of two numbers that multiply to that number (-6) but add to the middle
number (-5)
In short: what two numbers multiply to -6 but add to -5?
In this case, -6 and 1 do the trick!
3) Use these numbers to split the middle term:

3x2 5x 2 3x2 + (6x + 1x) 2 = 0

4) Then we see what the first two terms (3x2 & 6x) can be divided by (it should
be 3x) and what last two terms (1x & 2) can be divided by (it should be 1),
and then well actually factor these out:

3x2 + 6x + 1x 2 3x(1x 2) + 1(1x 2) = 0

5) Then we notice that the first and last parts of this equation share a factor of
(3x + 2), so well bring this out to the front!

3x(1x 2) + 1(1x 2) (3x + 1)(x 2) = 0

6) Then we need to remember that anything times 0... is 0, which means that
either (3x + 1) = 0 or (x 2) = 0, so we solve both of these equations to solve for
x!

15

* Solve 6x2 + 7x + 2 = 0

1) Multiply the first (3) and last (-2) numbers:

2) What two numbers multiply to (

) but add to (

)?

3) Use these numbers to split the middle term:

6x2 + 7x + 2 6x2 + (

x+

x) + 2 = 0

4) Actually factor these out:

x2 + (

x+

x) + 2 = 0 (

)(

x+

)+(

)(

x+

)=0

5) See what they share and bring it out to the front!

6) Remember that anything times 0... is 0, which means that either [fill these in
with the factors you found] (
x + ) = 0 or (
x + ) = 0, so we solve both
of these equations to solve for x!

16

* Solve 15x2 + 4x 3 = 0

17

* Solve x2 1 = 0, (think of it as x2 + 0x 1 = 0)

18

* Solve 3x2 5x 2 = 0

Hints:
1) Multiply and simplify first (order of operations)
7) Anything raised to the power of 0 is 1!
13) Setting them equal makes finding x easy, but you can also subtract the two equations.
15) What multiplies to 12 but adds to 7? 4 & 3
16) What multiplies to -45 but adds to 4? -5 & 9
17) What multiplies to -1 but adds to 0? 1 & -1
18) What multiplies to -6 but adds to 1? -2 & 3
