Steinbeganteachinginthespringof2000atPrincetonUniversity.AtthetimeSteinwasa
mathematicsprofessoratPrincetonandShakarchiwasagraduatestudentinmathematics.
ThoughShakarchigraduatedin2002,thecollaborationcontinueduntilthefinalvolumewas
publishedin2011.Theseriesemphasizestheunityamongthebranchesofanalysisandthe
applicabilityofanalysistootherareasofmathematics.
ThePrincetonLecturesinAnalysishasbeenidentifiedasawellwrittenandinfluential
seriesoftextbooks,suitableforadvancedundergraduatesandbeginninggraduatestudentsin

Beginninginthespringof2000,Steintaughtasequenceoffourintensiveundergraduatecoursesin
analysisatPrincetonUniversity,wherehewasamathematicsprofessor.Atthesametimehe
collaboratedwithRamiShakarchi,thenagraduatestudentinPrinceton'smathdepartmentstudying
underCharlesFefferman,toturneachofthecoursesintoatextbook.SteintaughtFourieranalysisin
thatfirstsemester,andbythefallof2000thefirstmanuscriptwasnearlyfinished.ThatfallStein
taughtthecourseincomplexanalysiswhileheandShakarchiworkedonthecorrespondingmanuscript.

PaulHagelstein,thenapostdoctoralscholarinthePrincetonmathdepartment,wasateachingassistant
forthiscourse.Inspring2001,whenSteinmovedontotherealanalysiscourse,Hagelsteinstartedthe
sequenceanew,beginningwiththeFourieranalysiscourse.HagelsteinandhisstudentsusedSteinandShakarchi'sdraftsastexts,andthey
madesuggestionstotheauthorsastheypreparedthemanuscriptsforpublication.[2]TheprojectreceivedfinancialsupportfromPrinceton
UniversityandfromtheNationalScienceFoundation.[3]
ShakarchiearnedhisPh.D.fromPrincetonin2002[4]andmovedtoLondontoworkinfinance.Nonethelesshecontinuedworkingonthe
books,evenashisemployer,LehmanBrothers,collapsedin2008.[2]Thefirsttwovolumeswerepublishedin2003.Thethirdfollowedin
2005,andthefourthin2011.PrincetonUniversityPresspublishedallfour.[5][6][7][8]

theunityamongthebranchesofanalysis,oftenreferencingonebranchwithinanotherbranch'sbook.Theyalsoprovideapplicationsofthe
