Questions Booklet

Instructions
This critical thinking test will assess your ability to make logically justified inferences based
upon the statements provided.
Read the instructions preceding each section and answer the questions. There are a total of
14 questions in this test and you should aim to correctly answer as many questions as you can
within 30 minutes.
Try to find a time and place where you will not be interrupted during the test. The test will
begin on the next page.

Inferences
Instructions:
An inference is a conclusion drawn from observed or supposed facts. For example, if someone
presses a light switch but the light does not turn on, they might infer that the filament has burnt out.
However inferences may or may not be correct. For example in this case, the bulb could be missing,
or a fuse could be blown.
The questions in this section of the test will begin with a statement of facts that must be regarded as
true. After each statement you will be presented with possible inferences which might be drawn
from facts in the statement. Analyse each inference separately and decide on its degree of truth.
For each inference you will be provided with 5 possible answers: TRUE, PROBABLY TRUE, MORE
INFORMATION REQUIRED, PROBABLY FALSE, and FALSE.
Select TRUE if you believe the inference is definitely true, i.e. it correctly follows beyond a
reasonable doubt.
PROBABLY TRUE if, based on the facts at hand, you think the inference is PROBABLY TRUE; that it is
more likely to be true than false, but not TRUE beyond a reasonable doubt.
MORE INFORMATION REQUIRED, if you decide that there is not enough data to make a decision
based on the provided facts (or lack of facts).
PROBABLY FALSE if, based on the facts presented, you think the inference is PROBABLY FALSE; i.e. it
is more likely to be false than true, but there is not enough evidence to suggest that it is definitely
false
FALSE if you think the inference is definitely FALSE; i.e. it must be incorrect because it misrepresents
the facts provided or contradicts the facts provided in the statement.

Statement One:
The Eurozone is an economic and monetary union, comprised of 17 European Union
(EU) member states which have adopted the euro as their national currency. EU
member countries outside the Eurozone, other than the United Kingdom and Denmark,
are obliged to join the Eurozone once they meet the criteria to do so. Similarly, three
states outside the EU, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican city have signed formal
agreements to use the euro, and issue their own coins. Andorra is currently in
negotiations with the EU to adopt the euro as their national currency. However, Kosovo
and Montenegro have officially adopted the euro as their sole currency without an
agreement from the EU and therefore have no issuing rights.

Inference 1: Once a nation state reaches the criteria for entry into the Eurozone, they must join the
Eurozone.

Statement Two
The polar bear is the worlds largest land carnivore and also the largest species of
bear, along with the Kodiak bear. The polar bear is on average twice as large as the
Siberian tiger and adult males weigh between 350-700kg in the wild. Adult females
are roughly half the size, weighing between 150-250kg. Polar bears are insulated with
up to 10 cm of blubber, which causes them to overheat at temperatures above 10 C.
Unlike brown bears, polar bears are unlikely to become obese in captivity, likely due to
warm conditions in most zoos. Polar bears are excellent swimmers and individuals
have been seen on open arctic waters as far as 300 km from land.

Inference 1: Polar bears in captivity are much larger than those in the wild.

Statement Three
The Roaring Twenties is a term used to describe the 1920s, particularly the decades
cultural edge and distinctive economic prosperity across Europe and north America.
The roaring twenties saw the large scale sale and use of cars, telephones, cinema
and electricity, along with huge changes in lifestyle and culture. International media
began to focus on celebrities, particularly movie stars and sporting heroes. Similarly,
many brand new cinemas and sports stadiums were constructed. However, in 1929
the period of economic and cultural prosperity ended with the wall street crash of
1929, sending the world into the great depression.

Inference 1: Mass production of cars began in the 1920s.
