Case Studies

BATS/Geological Fleet Deployment

An oil and gas service provider performing sub-ocean floor surface imaging required critical ship-to-ship wireless
broadband communications for a new fleet configuration demanding connectivity beyond the reach of their existing
wireless network. The service provider uses wireless network connectivity to control and synchronize production
activity throughout the fleet as well as provide inter-vessel data transfers.
These types of surveys have traditionally been limited to ship distances of less than 9 km and low data
rates of 1.5Mbps or less. Increasing the distance between vessels allows for greater resolution of data and mapping
of increased ocean depths. The higher bandwidth enables data analysts to perform analysis and data correction
during production instead of waiting until surveys have been completed. That increased efficiency not only allows for
a faster turn-around of post-production data but also a faster reaction time to any data collection methods that may
need to be adjusted during the survey.
In collaboration with the customer, BATS designed a triple redundant mesh network
solution that exceeded the requirements of the geophysical services company.
BATS integrated a 5.8GHz point-to-point wireless broadband radio with the BATS
DVM-300 self-aligning antenna and tracking system. This solution was able to
maintain wireless links at distance in excess of 30 km providing from 10-18Mbps of
throughput on each connection. Each of the four vessels in the fleet was configured
with three DVM-300 systems connecting each vessel to all others in the fleet in a
mesh topology. This topology created the zero downtime resiliencies required in
this demanding environment, as well as delivering aggregate speeds of up to
54Mbps between vessels

BATS gave us a high data rate

and long range capability.

BATS/Military Gigabit Broadband

In one of the most inhospitable regions of the world, a defense technologies company needed to establish
communication links with gigabit speeds between locations that were 3 to 11 miles apart. Over harsh and hostile
mountain terrain, establishing a link between these end points continually proved to be more than challenging. The
customer sought to establish a communication link of gigabit speeds utilizing antennas under one degree in
beamwidth. From drop-off to finish, the link would need to be established between two remote locations in less than
three hours.
Utilizing the BATS BTS-5000 High Precision Positioning System, and pairing it with high-capacity radios, which have
ultra-narrow beamwidth of just 0.4 degree, BATS was able to establish a massive capacity (Gb+) communication
link within 15 minutes from setup with an accuracy within 0.01 degree.
The BATS BTS-5000 is a quickly deployable, self-aligning antenna and tracking system with a
heavyweight payload capacity of 50 pounds. The rugged design of the system makes it effective even in the
harshest conditions. The unit requires minimal technical skill and time to deploy, and it can be controlled remotely,
making it an ideal solution for military deployments. The BATS system enabled the communication link to be rapidly
deployed and more robust in dangerous conditions.

BATS/Homeland Security
In late June 2010, world leaders gathered for the G-20 Toronto Summit to
discuss the global financial system and the world economy. The Toronto G-20
Summit was the most expensive ever with security alone costing an estimated
$1 billion. The Toronto police department retained Cambium for its critical
communications and Cambium called on BATS for their innovative broadband
solutions expertise.
Cambium, in conjunction with the Toronto police department was charged with
finding a flexible and efficient deployment solution to enable the rollout of a
secure broadband communications network within a compressed timeline.
BATS provided a logistically flexible, quick deployment solution for this highsecurity environment. BATS technicians set-up the DVM-300 quick deploy
system integrated with a 4.9 GHz Point-to-Point (PTP600) Wireless Broadband
Radio from Cambium. The BATS unit was positioned on a semi-trailer that could
be easily repositioned. The BATS system maintained a T1 link between the
mobile unit and a fixed unit stationed on top of the U.S. delegates hotel, keeping
authorities in constant contact. The BATS system eliminated the need to reaim/align the radio when the mobile command unit was deployed, allowing the
establishment of a connection between the mobile unit and fixed point in
minutes. Without BATS groundbreaking technology it typically requires thirty
minutes to manually align radio connections. BATS technology was critical to
maintaining the high-security of the G-20 Summit. As leaders discussed the
ongoing global recession, BATS maintained critical communications for the
Toronto police department. Despite violent protests, the arrest of more than 1000
protesters and a force of approximately 20,000 police from different agencies,
security communications went off without a hitch. The network connection
performed flawlessly throughout the conference.

In the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks, New York City officials realized they could no longer rely on
private data. "Sharing a network amongst eight million people and vital and critical city operations that's just an
unworkable situation," explains Carole Post of the New York City Department of Information Technology and
Telecommunications (DoITT). "We needed to improve our own infrastructure, our own communication methods
amongst and between ourselves and we needed this hardened, secure, dedicated network to be able to do that.
The BATS BTS-2500 plays a critical role in New York Citys wireless emergency
response network. The BTS-2500 System is able to automatically locate, lock in,
and track wireless broadband connections among mobile command centers and
remote locations throughout the entire NYC coverage area in under 8 minutes.
This is accomplished with a BATS BTS-2500 with Gyro-Stabilizer with GPS on
remote side mounted on a mobile communication unit(s) and a stationary BTS2500 System perched on top of the Empire State Building. This system set up
seamlessly integrates with the New York City Wireless Network and provides 110
megabit throughput to New York Citys emergency services broadband wireless
network.
The BATS BTS-2500 also provided additional benefits in the form of significant
cost savings versus satellite and cellular alternatives.

BATS/Rapid WAN Provisioning

An oil and gas company sought an alternative to costly and disruptive landlines during a shutdown / turnaround of it
refinery operations. Establishing a short-term wireless platform at the petrochemical complex presents unique
challenges including conflicting RF applications and the presence of dense steel structures and storage tanks.
Traditionally, engineers and computer support were necessary to maintain a microwave link for network access.
BATS provided a custom solution integrating a 5.4 GHz Point-to-Point (PTP600) Wireless Broadband
Radio from Motorola, Inc. The BATS system located, locked, and tracked the wireless broadband connection by
reflecting the radio frequency off of a large oil storage tank. The network connection exceeded expectations throughout
the turnaround period, offering data speeds up to 127 Mbps.

"We were amazed when the

BATS system scanned the
horizon for its friendly [access
point] and locked onto the
connection by reflecting the
signal off of a 30-foot high oil
storage tank
It continues to work flawlessly."

BATS/Emergency Communications
A Louisiana parish required a rapidly deployable mobile command center to provide on-site command and control at
disaster sites and to act as a redundant 911 call center. Redundancy and mobility are crucial for governmental
organizations to be able to respond quickly and effectively when disasters occur. Traditionally, on-site disaster
response has been limited by deployment time, the high levels of technical expertise required, and a high level of
complexity due to multiple communications platforms.
The parishs emergency communications requirements presented several specific challenges. The
customer needed to be able to rapidly deploy the mobile command center to any site across the 270 square mile
parish and initiate communications in under 10 minutes. In addition, the wireless broadband network would be
deployed by non-technical personnel. Finally, the parish required a minimum of 100Mbps throughput for voice and
video communications.
Integrated with a 4.9GHz (PTP600) wireless broadband radio from
Cambium, the BATS DVM-300 was able to locate, lock, and track
the wireless broadband connection between the mobile command
center and one of four towers arranged across the coverage area.
The mobile command center and the towers both utilized the DVM300 to provide 360 of coverage ability from each tower using
directional antennas to provide the range and throughput required to
reach all areas of the parish.
