2. Let : (0, ) R3 be a regular curve.
(a) If limt (t) = 0, show that the length of is nite.

(b) We say is unbounded if for every r R, there exists a t (0, ) such that ||(t)|| > r. If is

5. We say that a regular surface S is path-connected if for any two p, q S, there exists a regular curve
: (2, 2) S such that (1) = p and (1) = q. Recall that the tangent space to a regular surface
S at a point r S is dened as:
Tr S = { (t0 )| is a regular curve in S with (t0 ) = r}.
Let F denote a xed two dimensional subspace of R3 and S denote a path-connected regular surface
in R3 . Assume that for every r S, Tr S = F . Prove that S is a subset of a plane parallel to F .

7. Prove that the squaring map of the sphere is dierentiable. More elaborately, let S 2 be the unit sphere
in R3 . For each point p on the sphere, its azimuth is the angle from the north-pole (0, 0, 1) while
its longitude is the angle the projection of p onto xaxis makes w.r.t. the xaxis. While azimuth is
dened for all points on the sphere, the longitude is dened for all points except the north and south
poles. Now, the squaring map of the sphere sends a point p with azimuth and longitude to the
point with azimuth and longitude 2, while preserving the poles.

(Jackpot) Let f : Rn Rn be any function satisfying f 1 {0} = {0}. We say that such an f is anglepreserving if given any two non-zero u, v Rn , one of the two angles between u and v equals either of the
angles between f (u) and f (v). Prove the following:
(a) f is a linear isomorphism.
(b) There exists an origin preserving isometry g : Rn Rn and a positive real number such that f = g.
