Age: 19 I feel that the class participation pedagogy of SMU, definitely help to build an encouraging environment for students to voice
their opinions. This is especially helpful in our Asian society, where students are inherently less outspoken than our Western
counterparts. My personal experience with participation in school is a mixture of both the positives and negatives. I like the
fact that we are given an unrestrained environment to speak our minds and clear our doubts. It develops our speaking skills
and critical thinking skills. However, by tying class participation to overall grades, it has led to some students asking questions
for the sake of their grades, which are neither constructive nor essential.
The amount that I participate in class varies. It greatly depends on whether I have any burning questions to clarify, or
whether I can broaden my understanding of the topic at hand. If there are no questions I want to ask, or constructive
feedback that I can contribute, I would choose to not speak.
In general, I think my teachers expect us to clarify genuine doubts and give useful inputs to liven the class and create a floor
for interactive exchange of ideas.
I aim to give as much constructive input as I can, but I still believe in the mantra “quality over quantity”. I look forward to working cohesively with my
group mates in the CSP project. I believe that initiative and teamwork plays an important role for an enjoyable and effective CSP project. I do not have
a strict goal of whether I would like to participate more or less, since quantity is not my main focus. I will participate in class if I have got quality
comments to offer. I look forward to exchanging ideas and having an enriching experience for LTB.
Jamie Goh Zhi Min Participation in class in JC was not graded but you could speak up and ask questions/give answers whenever you
wanted to. Being around classmates whom I were familiar with made class participation easier for me. Class
Age: 19 participation is not something that comes easily to me, but I do express my opinions when I feel strongly towards
something or I feel I have something constructive to share with the class. I would participate by asking questions or
sharing my two cents worth regarding certain issues the class was discussing. The teachers did not expect much from us
concerning participation but we found it polite and respectful to respond appropriately when necessary. Certain classes
such as GP (General Paper) were interactive and we were expected to participate more actively. Other classes like
Mathematics were less interactive.
Goals:
a. Speak up more in class, even though it may not be second nature to me (E.g. 2 times per lesson), provide
constructive opinions/ideas, have more confidence speaking up, especially around classmates who I do not know
b. Participate more in LTB than I would have in JC
c. Do my part in the CSP, and essentially, participate ACTIVELY
d. Be encouraging towards group mates while doing the CSP
Back in high school, and even some times in a university in Vietnam, I found class participation something
unfathomable. Both professors and students are so accustomed to the traditional way of teaching‐ one talks while Nguyen Minh Dang
other takes notes –no matter how enthusiastic or willing you can be, you will be regarded as a disturbing nerd who
participates by talking so much in class. If there are any, those could only be the times when students volunteered (Danny)
to do the homework on the blackboard.
Age: 20
Trained in such environment, I am unfamiliar and even afraid to respond quickly to the questions raised in class.
However, the whole thing changed when I came to Singapore to join the Bridging Programme a year ago. We were
told to participate in class as much as possible, even disagree with what the professors may say, in order to at least
clarify the doubts inside. I found this amazingly interesting and beneficial so I have been trying my best to
participate in class. But as always life is not easy.
I have seen various types of class participation, and most commonly some people talked so much, some other
foreign students and I, are hindered from participating. Therefore I myself decided on my own way of class
participation: talking less but with more substance. As for LTB, I have already thought about how and what I could
do for participation and I found that I would be better for me to participate more in the community service
projects in spite of talking much in class but doing nothing. For this module, actions speak louder than words, I
believe.
Saying so, along with participating moderately in class, I will spare no effort of mine to make the CSP as successful
as it could be. It could be more tiring, exhausting and harder than any participation I have ever done before but
certainly the juice will be worth the squeeze.

Coming from St Andrew Junior College’s science stream, class participation did not have much variety; unlike the
variety of answers and opinions, in science you were either correct or wrong; you either volunteered to give
Tan Chao Yuan
answers(not likely) or the teacher ‘encouraged’ you to volunteer(a lot more likely).
Age: 21
Class participation never counted toward grades. Furthermore, the only grade that really mattered was the A’ levels.
Without any real motivation, and the constant prospect of being accused of being a show‐off, it was obvious that
everyone in my class, save for the tutor, was silent.
Thankfully, there were subjects that had absolutely nothing to do with the A’ level curriculum. Pastoral care, moral
guidance, different schools had different names for it. Yet they all had it. With different standards of moral values,
this was as close and as good as it got to class participation. During these times, class participation suddenly
increased in value. It was not difficult when it came to opinions on life; its meaning, morality, ethics, essentially
everything outside schoolwork. It was fun.
The teacher expected nothing but honesty. She was not critical, and seemed genuinely interested in our opinion. The
most interesting topic we had touched on was homosexuality and relationships, the former due to its controversy,
and the latter due to its widespread effect. No student was ever criticised, and everyone who had contributed had
probably left feeling more sure of their opinions, or gave more thought to their opinions. At least, I did.
With regard to the current situation, class participation takes on a whole new nature. It’s alluring, and does contribute directly to my grade. Naturally I
would want to participate more. However, it is still on the condition that no genuine embarrassment is suffered on my part. Whether quantity is graded,
quality is still very much essential to my idea of what class participation should be like.
In complete candor, i do not feel a need to change the essence of how I participate in class: honesty, and clear views of my own ethical standards are the
foundation of my opinions, and this is emphasized by the need for reasoning in the law faculty.
Admittedly, I would need to be faster on my feet when thinking. How this can be achieved is not clear, and as of yet, it seems that it can only be developed
with practice. However it is easy to deduce that it will be put to good practice during my 4 years in this institution, and it is my desire that this module will
not exempt such practice.
Nguyen Thi Minh Back in Vietnam, to be honest, I hardly had any impressive experience related to class participation. The main
reason is that to the mindset of a large portion of educationalists and students alike, class participation is far from
Nguyen (Kara) the vigorous and informative interactions among different agents as witnessed in SMU. There are always cases
where the teachers find themselves bringing up questions and receiving no reply from the students. Most of the
Age: 19 time, the teachers have to resort to calling some random student to produce an answer so as to put an end to the
awkward moment. The answers are copied exactly from the textbook or provide no insight of the learners. Besides,
the students see no appealing reason to raise questions or engaging themselves to class discussions. At best, they’d
rather clarify the concerns on their own and at worst, they simply don’t bother to understand the lessons in depth.
Put another way, the governing education system in our country still rests heavily on individual concentration,
thereby blocking most channels to exchange and explore further information.
Moreover, even those who really take class participation seriously and come to embrace it as a positive and
enriching experience may be discouraged from doing so due to peer pressure. I used to get very eager to respond to
every question raised by the teacher but after several times, there went around the rumor that I was so arrogant,
that I wanted to attract the teacher’s attraction and become her pet. Though my incentives were totally different,
those words still hurt me in a way and I decided to cut down on the class participation frequency. Gradually, I grew
out of the habit of throwing out my voice during class sessions.
So I do not possess a nice record of class participation to trumpet about although I have been a student with good
transcripts up to university. Therefore it can be fairly said that I start the class participation thing afresh coming to
SMU. It stands to reason that I can’t help but feel quite intimidated when it is counted as a component of the course. Yet, I do not fail to acknowledge
the wonders it bring to me whenever I open my mouth. Those turn into a motivation to change myself for the better. Classes such as LTB require
enormous effort to contribute to the class and group work and the sooner I situate comfortably within the class participation zone, the more smoothly
the work will be going. It is high time to carry out some resolutions for the new term, among of which is my desire to be an active and appreciated part
of every class.
I know it will not be a child play but I have never been more prepared to transform myself than right now. To that end, I need to expand my knowledge
and get more sociable so that I can enjoy contributing opinions with substance and widening my network at the same time. With this in mind, I hope
the class participation will turn an ordeal into eye‐opening experience.

In secondary school, I was a Peer Support Leader (PSL) whose main role was to integrate the incoming

Secondary 1 students into school as well as to bond the general student population. Every year, since Secondary Age: 19
2, I participated in the orientation camp. Even though I still maintained the capacity as a PSL, in each year of
duty, teachers had different expectations. First as a facilitator in Secondary 2, then a organizer and finally a
mentor. In secondary school, I also organized a ‘KeepFIT Day @ Cedar’, a sports carnival for the elderly who
lived in single‐room flats from Toa Payoh. This project not only aimed to encourage the elderly to do more
sports and live more healthily, it also provided an avenue for students to interact with people much older than
them. My teacher‐in‐charge expected me to be self sufficient in my planning and to only look to them for help if
higher authority were required.
In pre‐tertiary education, I was the girls house captain. At appointment, it was only the second year of
implementation of the house system at ACS (Independent) IBDP. Hence, I came up with the initiative of a house
tee‐shirt for the girls. My house mistress expected me to provide this house tee shirt for not only the girls but
also to the other boys from the secondary school side. This required me to collaborate with the other junior
house captains. In Year 5, I went on CSP trip to a mountainous village in Taichung. There, we set up a blog to
promote tourism to that village and erected signboards all over as well. Besides providing mechanical support
to the Chubean Village, we were expected to teach the children there some English and interact with them as
well after we ‘got‐off‐work’.
Goals (participating in LTB):
To give constructive comments during group meetings
To answer questions asked by Prof
To be able to point out problematic suggestions at group meetings and not be too compromising

Participation Experience
In secondary school, I was the basketball captain of the team. Being the captain of the team, I was
Age: 20
responsible for the discipline of the team and helping my coach and teacher. I am supposed to be a
role model to my teammates demonstrating my passion and determination especially during
matches. My teacher had expected a lot from me and my team as we had a good batch of basketball
players. Eventually, we won the Interschool National Basketball League when I was secondary four.
During my 2 years in junior college, I joined the Chess Club. Though I do not have any high position, I
was in charge of organizing some events such as CCA open house. The teacher expects me to do well
in the events I had organized and to play a part in training the juniors.
Goals
Firstly, I wish to try my best to help the people in the society through our group project and hope
that it will make their lives become better. Secondly, I hope to forge strong bonds with my group
mates and do well for the project. Thirdly, I wish to be able to become a better person or leader
through this course. Lastly, as I am not good in expressing myself, I am looking forward to improving this aspect of me.
I would still like to participate as much as I did in my secondary school. Hopefully I would be able to have enough time to work with my
teammates, plan very well for the project and contribute as much as I am able to.

Project objective(s): Club M.E.D aims to use this CSP to educate primary school students on environmental conservation and we hope to accomplish this in a fun
and interactive manner. It is our belief that environmental conservation should begin from young and this mindset should be inculcated as early as possible. We
aim to use a two‐pronged approach to spread the green message. By the end of our mini‐campaign, students should
1. Understand the extent of damage done to the environment (Knowledge)
2. Learn how they can do their part in saving the environment (Action)
Brief description of the project: We plan to hold a mini‐campaign in 2 primary schools urging the students to save the environment. Our approach would be to
conduct an assembly programme followed by an exhibition display in the school canteen. The assembly programme would include:
1. 15‐minute talk to raise awareness of our deteriorating environment
2. Short skit with energy and water saving tips integrated
3. Interactive quiz with students
Benefit(s) to the community: With students armed with environmental conservation knowledge, we believe they will be able to spread the green message to
those around them, i.e. friends and family. This sphere of knowledge increases as more are aware of what can be done to conserve the environment. One
person with knowledge can accomplish little; but a community equipped with energy saving knowledge will surely make a difference. Not only will families be
able to save on utility bills, they will be doing their part to save the environment. We believe this CSP holds an element of sustainability, which follows the notion
that environmental conservation is an ongoing process.
Skills students will develop: Through the entire process of planning and execution, we believe that we would first and foremost, develop the skill of effective
communication. In holding the campaign in primary schools, we would have to find ways to use various multimedia resources to engage the students and
capture their attention. Besides communicating with younger students, we would also understand how to liaise with sponsors and schools. Other skills we would
develop include:
1. Leadership
2. Time Management
3. Coordination as a team
Expected hours per week: 4 per person
Having received a negative response from Pei Chun Public School ): , Club M.E.D will now focus all our energy and resources on all the girls at PLMGPS! :D

REPORT: PLMGPS HERE WE COME!
Letter of Intent:
Dear Sir/ Madam:
To Educate Students on Environment Conservation
We are a group of students from Singapore Management University hoping to educate Primary School children regarding environmental conservation. Our team name, Club
M.E.D – Making Enormous Differences, is in line with our aim to make a positive impact on the environment. More about us can be found in the attached mission statement.
We believe that environmental awareness should be cultivated from a young age and we hope to use primary schools as a platform to spread the green message. Our
approach is to conduct an assembly programme followed by an exhibition display in your canteen. The assembly programme would include:
1. 15‐minute talk to raise awareness of our deteriorating environment
2. Short skit with energy and water saving tips integrated
3. Interactive quiz with students
We understand the possibility of time constraints during the assembly period, in which case we are flexible with adjusting our programme accordingly.
The short skit and quiz are also geared to suit the children’s active nature; we aim to provide environmental awareness in a fun and interesting manner.
Three members of our team would be hosting the programme and four others would be participating in the skit.
We believe that our project will be able to make a deep and enlightening impact on the children and help them realise that they can start making a positive impact on the
environment immediately.
We can be contacted via e‐mail at smu.club.med@gmail.com. Please kindly reply us by January 29th so as to facilitate a more effective programme on our part. We look
forward to a fun and enriching experience with the children!
Yours sincerely,

Dear Jamie,
We'd be very happy for you to do a project with our girls. We'd like you to come

At PL, we try not to have one‐off ad hoc events. I have 2 girls who have come up

Club M.E.D Times March 26, 2010
Abstract of Project:
In collaboration with Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School, our group, Club M.E.D, aims to spread the green message of
environmental conservation among primary school students. Using our project as a platform, we hope to pass on the
knowledge to students and enable them to play their part in protecting the environment by applying water and energy‐
saving tips, as well as practicing the 3Rs in their daily lives.
The confirmed venues for the project execution are the PLMGPS assembly hall and the canteen. This is to engage a large number of students, possibly close to
1,500.
Our action plan includes:
1. Workshop for the PLMGPS’ Environmental club
• Date and Time: 26th February 2010, Friday, 0800hrs – 0900hrs
• To pass on the knowledge and skills to the school’s green advocates who will act as our ambassadors and help maintain our project’s sustainability.
• Format: Short presentation, interactive games and a poster design competition
2. Talk and Skit at Assembly hall
• Date and Time: 12th March 2010 Friday, 0730hrs – 0900hrs
• Format: Informative talk and interactive skit
3. Exhibition at canteen booth
• Date and Time: Set up: 9th March 2010, Tuesday
Execution: 12th March 2010, Friday
• To help students learn environmental tips in a fun and memorable way
• Format: Poster exhibition, interactive games, girls write on post‐its their pledge to help save the earth
4. Facebook Page:
• To track progress and to increase the interactivity of our project.
• Students are able to post their comments as well as the green tips that they have followed. Those that accumulate 20 of these “green tips” posts will be
noted in the name list which will be given to the school and presented with a badge of encouragement during their assembly blocks.
• We will be in charge of this Facebook page until June 2010, after which the Environmental club will take over.

Buses available : 48, 66, 67, 151, 153, 154, 156, 170, 171 and 186
Nearest MRT stations are Newton, Little India and Clementi
Buses available from the various MRT stations:
Newton: 171 (TIBS bus) from Goldbell building
Little India (the direction going towards KK hospital): 48, 66 and 67
Clementi: 154 (where housing estates are, not at the bus interchange side)
You need to walk in from Bukit Timah Road to our office (about 15 mins walk) instead of following the red arrows on the map attached, walk straight (passing Jacob Balla
Children’s Garden gate) and as you walk up the slope about 70 metres after the slope you will see CUGE or rather you will see ‘Gardens by the bay’ stated on the map (house 1)
I suggest you to bring the map along for those who never been to our office before!
For those who are driving, you can follow the red arrows on the map (drive in from Kheam Hock road traffic junction) and its a one way drive to our office. Our building is a
colonial building on the left (house 3). You will not miss House 5 (Institute of Policy Studies – IPS), house 4 (Black angus and Chinese box restaurants) and finally house 3.
Alternatively you may check out the bus directory at www.gothere.sg <http://www.gothere.sg> , this is a very useful and user friendly web.

Hi Jamie,
After much discussion with the school leaders, we have decided that your team can come down on 12 March, Friday for the talk cum skit. Your allocated slot would be 7.30 ‐
8.15a.m in the school main hall. All pupils from Primary 1 ‐ 6 will be present. We would like to highlight that the usage of Standard English is required during the skit. We
discourage the use of Singlish or other offensive remarks as pupils may emulate them. You may want to keep the environmental talk brief (max: 10 ‐ 15 min).
Regarding the displays, you could set up the exhibits on 10 March, Wednesday (in the afternoon) so that the pupils could start viewing the exhibition panels on 11 March. You
can then remove the displays by 12 noon on 12 March. This is to allow pupils to have sufficient time viewing the exhibition panels as there may be congestion during their
respective recesses on 12 March. You could test the AV equipment on 11 March, Thursday.
Could you train the green advocates during their CCA slot from 8 ‐ 9a.m on 26 February 2010? Due to space constraint, we have a classroom that you could use for the training.
These are some matters that I need more details on:
‐ exact displays/exhibits/posters

I am really sorry for my late reply because there are many things that need ironing out.
Since our CSP event will take place on 12th Friday March, I hope that you can facilitate us with an early collection of the torch lights. From my past experience, I wonder if you
need to first send me a confirmation email which I will print out and bring to the collection point. Is there any outlet or retailer of yours that I can get hold of the items? If not, I
can still come to your place which is Woodlands Industrial Park though it is quite far. Our preferred date would be 9th Tuesday, March since I am also on the way to collect
other goodie stuffs. Is it ok for you?
Since our CSP takes place for a few days, there is actually no request for frequent exercise. However, we will manage to keep in touch with the school by every month giving
prize for the students who have 20 valuable comments related to their saving environment habit on our Facebook group. We would appreciate if you can further assist us with
this practice. Thanks a lot and I look forward to your reply.
With best regards.

Hi Nguyen
I’m afraid you will have to collect from our office as we do not have other outlets. You can come anytime bet 9‐5.30pm on 9.3.10.
We will prepare 30pcs of dynamo torch as discussed, and we would also request you send us some pictures of the event.
Look forward to your favourable reply asap.

Dear Deborah,
It is ok for us in that case anyway. I will come to collect on the confirmed date. By the way, I wonder if there is any mistake in the
number of torch lights to be given. If I remember well, you will sponsor us 40 units, not 30. Would you mind checking that again? If you can only give us 30, it will be fine then
but we have to reduce the number of goodie bags. Thanks a lot .
I look forward to your reply.

Dear Sir/Madam
Club M.E.D sincerely thanks you and your company for your invaluable assistance. As university students with extremely limited resources, we appreciate the
fact that we could never have done this on our own. Without a doubt, the programme would not have been successful without your help.
By sponsoring part of the prize package, the students were greatly spurred on to participate actively in our programme. There was a great buzz in the air and
the prizes were completely given away. We even had to go out of the school to buy tidbits as new prizes for the children! Needless to say, the programme
was also extremely fun for Club MED.
We are heartened by the fact that there are companies such as yours, who also share the awareness of the Earth’s current state. We sincerely believe that
our efforts will not go to waste, and that we can make a positive difference by starting from the children.
We hope that you will also enjoy the attached pictures.
Sincerely yours,
