Inobservationone,thetrackteamslocationfor
Wednesday,September16th,2015,wasonthesideofahill.However,noteveryworkoutis
goingtobeoveronhills.Everytrackworkoutconsistofdifferentlocationsand/orindoor
activities.It'simportanttorealizethat,onedaytheteammayhavetoworkoutonthefield,other
daystheymayhavetrackspeedworkworkoutsorgotothegymtoliftweights.

FiguredWorld:
Afiguredworldisagroupinsocietywithitsownrulesandregulationsonhow
tocarryitselfmeanwhile,knowingtheirplaceinsocietyaswell.

Forthepastfouryearsofmylife,Istronglybelievedinthesayingtrackislife!
Therefore,Ifigured,whatbetterthingformetoobserveandchoosetobasemyfiguredworldoff
ofthanwhatIhavedevotedfouryearsofmylifeto.Ihavedecidedtoobservetrackandfield
athletes.Forone,Iwasatrackathletemyselfinhighschool,andIcurrentlyhavetheschool
recordsforfourdifferentevents.
However,mylasttwoyearswerenotmybestyearstosayintheleast.Somecoaches
choosetoleave,othersdidnotcare,andtheteamIhadoncethoughtofasafamilywasfalling
apart.Mytimesweregettingworse,andIhadnocluehowtotrainmyself.Iwasgivingit(track)
myallandreceivingnothinginreturn.IhaveoftenwonderedifIhadlostmypassionfortrack?I
knowforafactthatoneshouldnotlettheactionsofothersdeterthemfortheirpassions,goals,
andambitions.Forthisreason,Iwouldliketotakeastepbackandlookatwhatbeingatruly
devotedtrackathleteincollegeentailsfromadifferentpointofviewinhopesofrekindlingthe
flameIhadoncehadfortrack.
Whatattractspeopletotrackisthesamethingthattendstoleadthemastrayitsa
challenge.Trackismorethanphysicallychallengingbutmentallychallengingaswell.Many
peoplearementallyweakandlackselfmotivationandnevermakeitthroughawholeseason.I
knowforafactthatanyandeverytrackathletewilloftenquestionthemselvesonwhytheyare
torturingtheirbodies?Butonceagain,trackasportforthosewhowishtolearnhowfartheycan
pushthemselvesineveryaspect.Trackandfield,inmyopinion,isoneofthebestsportsinthe
world,becauseitisaplaceforfunandseriousness.Itsisimperativetoknowthedifference
betweenthesetwothings.
Onemustknowhowtoenjoythemselvesandhavefun!Yet,thereisatimeandplacefor
suchthings.Onthattrack,whenyouareoutthere,youareconductingbusinesswithasetgoalin
mindbreakrecords,settimes,havefun,andwin!Atrackathletecannothaveagivingup
attitude,theymusthaveperseverance.Theymustalwaysbepositive,nevercomplain,andlearn
howtobeanindividualteamplayer.

OnethingIlearnedfromtrackisthatthereisnosuchthingasacompleteloss.Intrack
youeitherWin,oryouLearnfromyourloss.Alwayskeepyourheadup,andfigureoutwhatto
dotobetteryourselfandtheteamforthenexttime.Andthereisdefinitelynosuchthingasbeing
tooloudatatrackmeet!Youyellandshoutinsupportofyourfellowtrackmatetillyoucannot
shoutanymore!Youmustalwaysbethereforyourteammatesbecausetheteammustbelikea
familyinordertopersevere.

Thetimeistheirrealenemy.Theymustgetacertainamountofsets
donebyacertaintimeortheywouldhavesuccessfullyconqueredtheworkoutofthe
day.

 Perseverance:
Thewillingnesstokeeponfightingandpushingonesselfpastmental
andphysicalfailure.Beingpositive,andknowingthattherestoftheteamistheretohelp
youkeepgoingisallthatsneeded.Knowingthateverythingthattheyareputtingin(to
theirworkout)theywillreceiveinreturn(atatrackmeet).

observing,itquicklybecameobviouswhoweretheleadersoftheteamandwhotheother
teammateslookedupto(besidesthecoaches).Therewasalwaysthesamethreepeople
thattherestoftheteamseemedtofollow.

Domain/PracticesofCommunity:
Domainandthepracticesofthecommunityarethesoul

and/orlosetogetherasone.Withthisinmind,theycontinuetomotivateoneanotherand
alwayshavesomehealthycompetitionwithintheteamthemselves.

SimultaneousGroupActivities(stretching):
Theonlywaytheseathletescommunicate
whiletheyareworkingoutisverballyand/orthroughbodylanguage.Noonebringstheir
phonesdowntothetrackwiththem.Thereforeitreallyisnotadistraction.Theyspeak
nonverballywiththeirbodylanguage.Theyplay,tease,andmessaroundwitheachother
bysquirtingwateroneachotherorpickingatoneanother.Mostofthecommunicating
occursduringscratchesorwaterbreaks.

Notethatthefollowingobservationstookplaceoverthefirst60minutesofpractice.However,
thetotalpracticetimeisabout80minutes.Thelast20minutesofpracticewasnotobserved
becauseIhada3:30class.Luckily,Iwasinformedbythecoachthatthelast20minutesof
practicesconsistedofbasicstretches.Also,notethatthereisnotanexactsettimeforeach
activityduetothefactthatpeople'sbodiesfatigueatdifferentratesandthecoacheswanttofit

inthewholeworkout.Therefore,thetimesegmentsthatIarrangedmyobservationsoffofwas
whenevertheteamproceededtothenextactivity.

2:00pm:Peoplebegantoshowuptopractice.Somewerealreadychangedandothersheadedup
tothelockerroomtogetchanged.Thecoachesheldregularconversationsaboutafootballgame
theyhadseenovertheweekend.Astheathletesbegantofiledownontothetrack,somealready
begintoanticipatewhattheworkoutconsistedof.Someseemtohavealreadyknownthattoday
was"hillday".Theathletesallgatheredaroundthe100marknumberline,drinkingwaterand
beingplayfulwitheachother.

2:13pm:CoachBrewercallstheteamtoattentionandtheyallmeetonthetrackatthe100line.
Thus,theybegintheirpractice.Sincetodaywas"hill's"day,theathletesonlyranonewarmup
lapandbeganstretching.

2:17pm:Thestretchesareasfollows:

2:45pm:Theteamfinishedhydratingandwalkedtheirwaytothehill.Peoplewereplaying
aroundwitheachother,laughingandsquirtingwateroneachother.

2:53pm:Theyreachedthehillonthesideoftheroad.Thehillhadaslightincline.

Severaloftheathletescommented"thisshouldbeeasy"astheymessedaroundwitheachother.
Thecoacheshadthemlinedupinrowsofthree.Thefemaleshadtorun120metersuphill,tothe
finishlinewherecoachBrewerstoodin21to27secondsandthemaleshadtorun120meters
within19and24secondsandjogbacktothestartinglinewherecoachAJstood.Theteamdid
fivesetsuphill.Theycontinuedtomotivateeachother,althoughastimewentontherewasless
talkingamongstthegroup.

3:01pm:Atthistimetheyweregivenawaterbreak.Mostoftheteamhadtakentheirshirtsoff
andweredrenchedinsweat.Thecoachesseemedtohavebeentalkingabouttheteamoffinthe
distance.

3:04pm:Thecoacheslinedtheteambackupandtheteamdideightmoresets.Theteam
communicatedmostlythroughbodylanguagenowgivingeachotherhighfivesandfistbumps.
Therewasmuchlesstalkingandalossofenergy.

3:14pm:Theworkouthadendedandtheteamwalkedbacktothetrackwithverylittletalking.
Theywerestillgivingeachotherhighfivesandcommunicatedthroughbodylanguage.Afew
teammateswouldmakeeyecontact,shaketheirheadsandjustchuckleasiftherewasamutual
orsharedunderstandingofhowoneanotherfelt.

Friday,September18th,2015

Note:Iarrivedabout30minuteslatetotheworkoutduetoameetingIhadtoattend.However,
onceagain,Iwasinformedbythecoachthattheathleteshadalreadycompletedtheirdynamic
stretches(whichwerethesameasthestretchesinobservationonefrom2:172:40).Iarrived
justastheybegantheirsecondset.

2:31pm:AsIarrived,theteamwasontheirwaterbreak,theyhadjustcompletedtheirfirstset
(run).Inoticedthattheirwasasignificantdifferenceinthenumberofpeoplewhowerethere.In
myfirstobservation,itseemedasifthewholeteamwaspresent3540peoplemoreorless.
However,todaytherewasonlyfiverunnersthreemiddistanceandtwodistancerunners.I
supposesinceitwasthehottesttimeoftheday,therestoftheteamhaddecidedtohavetheir
workoutsatanearliertimeinordertoavoidtheheat.

Iwasinformedthattoday'sworkoutconsistedof5x600sforthemiddistance,4x800sforthe
distancerunnersandanabcircuitworkout.Astheteamdranktheirwaterandstretched,
communicationwasataregularlevelnooneseemstobeextremelywindedtheirrecoverytime
isfairlyquick.

2:42pm:Theteamlinesbackupasthecoachspeaksabouthowhewantsthisnextsettoberan.
Theconversationwandersoffontothetopicofacookoutforabouttwominutesthencoachcalls
thegroupbacktogetheratattention.Theteamlaughsandrelaxesinaboutthreesecondsthey
becomefocusedandtakeoffagain.

Astheyrun,it'sbecomesobviouswhothedistancesversusthemiddistancerunnersare.They
allhavewonderfulformastheyrun,butthedifferenceinspeedishardtooverlook.The600
runnerswereobviouslyfasterthanthe800runnersjustasitwasobviousthatthe800runners
hadmuchmorestaminaandasenseof"pacing"themselvesout.Thecoachyellsoutthetimeas
eachpersonrunstotheendoftheirmark.

2:47pm:Waterbreak!The600runnerswalkacrossthefieldasthe800runnersfinishtheirrun.
Onceagaintheirbreathingisratherleveledandastheycomposethemselves,thetalking

andothersarestretching.

Heretheychallengeusmoreandexpectsomuchmoreoutofus.The
athletesherearealreadydevelopedsowejusthavetobe"polished".We
don'thavetospendthefirsthalfoftheseasonjustconditioningandtrying
togetintoshapebecausewearealreadythereforthemostpart.Alotof
peopleontheteamaremuchmoreseriousaboutbeinghereontheteam
thaninhighschooltoo.Backinhighschool,justaboutanyandeveryone
couldjointheteam,buthereyourspotisearned.

2. Giveanexampleofthebestandtheworstthingyou'venoticedabouttheteamandyour
ownperformance.

Thebestthingaboutthisteam:wearealljustfreakinggood!Andwehelp
pusheachotherconstantly.TheonlybadthingI'dhavetosayisthatthe
littlefreshmenthinkthattheseworkoutsarehardnow...wait'tillseason

HonestlysomeonelikeUsainBolt.He'sasprinterwithlonglegs!He

is100%dedicatedtoit(track).Despitehisbackgroundorthewayhe

Wellitreallyalldependsonwhateventsyou'retryingtogetbetterin.But
Ithinkthemostimprovementcouldbeseenfromarunnerthatdoes
intervalorlateralworkouts,youknow?Takingofwithagoodspeedtill
youreachthe100thenstride,thensprintthelast100.Buildinguplike
thatworkyourmusclesandmakesyoulearnhowtorunthenyoudon't
thinkyouhaveanythingleft.
