Tropical
Smoothie
Reduce.
Reuse.
Tropical
Smoothie
uses
Styrofoam
cups,
which
are
made
from
plastic
polystyrene.
Polystyrene
is
based
on
the
building
blocks
called
styrene
monomers,
so
small
doses
of
chemicals
leach
from
it
and
then
migrate
into
the
drink.
Styrene
is
classified
as
a
possible
human
carcinogen
by
the
EPA
and
by
the
International
Agency
for
Research
on
Cancer.
In
addition
to
the
health
effects,
the
use
of
hydrocarbons
by
the
polystyrene
foam
manufacturer
releases
the
hydrocarbons
into
the
air
at
ground
level;
there,
combined
with
nitrogen
oxides
in
the
presence
of
sunlight,
they
form
tropospheric
ozone.
Polystyrene
foam
is
often
dumped
into
the
environment
as
litter.
This
material
is
notorious
for
breaking
up
into
pieces
that
choke
animals
and
clog
their
digestive
systems.
Polystyrene
recycling
isnt
closed
loop
collected
polystyrene
cups
are
not
remanufactured
into
cups,
but
into
other
products,
such
as
packing
filler
and
cafeteria
trays.
This
means
that
more
resources
will
have
to
be
used,
and
more
pollution
created,
to
produce
more
polystyrene
cups.
Alternatives
for
Styrofoam
cups
are
post-consumer
recycled
paper,
which
are
renewable
resources.
The
paper
cups
are
biodegradable
when
composted
and
can
be
recycled
at
most
peoples
door.
A
better
alternative
to
paper
cups
is
reusable
cups.
Although
Tropical
Smoothie
already
has
reusable
cups,
an
improvement
could
be
made
such
as
a
larger
decrease
in
the
price
of
the
reusable
cups
or
the
price
of
the
smoothie
when
bought
with
a
reusable
cup.
Paper
and
reusable
cups
are
not
only
safer
for
costumer
consumption,
but
also
environmentally
friendly.
Recycle.
A
new
recycling
program
would
improve
the
energy
consumption
of
Tropical
Smoothie
and
its
costumers.
Placing
recycle
containers
throughout
the
restaurant
makes
it
convient
to
cycle
all
common
materials.
The
recycling
bins
should
look
different
from
each
other
and
be
clearly
marked.
The
recycling
bins
should
not
only
be
throughout
the
restaurant
but
in
the
kitchen
as
well,
so
that
it
is
easier
for
employees
to
use
them.
Signs
should
be
posted
to
encourage
costumers
to
recycle
and
should
include
Dos
and
Donts
for
recycling.
Recycling
reduces
extracting,
refining,
and
processing
raw
materials
all
of
which
create
sustantial
air
and
water
pollution.
As
recycling
saves
energy
it
also
reduces
greenhouse
gas
emissions
and
helps
sustain
the
enviroment
for
future
generations.
