The U.S. cash market continued its plummet lower today despite exports sales recovering a bit
from last week and a weaker U.S. dollar.
Guyana has exported around 497,176 tons of rice in the first eleven months (January November) of 2015, up about 10% from around 451,422 tons exported during the same period
last year, local sources quoted the General Manager of the Guyana Rice Development Board
(GRDB).The GRDB official noted that the industry is optimistic that this year's rice exports will
cross last year's record export figure. Guyana exported about 501,208 tons of rice in 2014, up
about 27% from around 394,988 tons exported in 2013, according to the GRDB.
Meanwhile the country's 2015 rice production up to the end of November reached 681,517 tons,
up about 7% from around 635,235 tons produced in the whole year of 2014. The GRDB told
local sources that the government is under pressure to find new markets for rice given the
increase in production and the loss of the Venezuelan market. "The government is committed to
assisting the farmers to find markets, and is currently working to tie up the Mexico market," he
said.
Wholesale basmati rice prices in India's capital, which have been increasing since the beginning
of November, have declined this week on adequate stocks from higher supplies and sluggish
demand, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).Prices of common basmati rice declined to
around Rs.6,200 - Rs.6,300 per quintal (around $933 - $948 per ton) today from around Rs.6,300
- 6,400 per quintal (around $948 - $963 per ton) yesterday.Prices of Pusa 1121 declined to
around Rs.4,700 - 5,500 per quintal (around $707 - $828 per ton) from around Rs.5,000 - 6,000
per quintal (around $753 - $903 per ton) yesterday.
"Sufficient stocks on the back of higher supplies from producing regions against slackened
demand from retailers mainly kept pressure on rice basmati prices," traders were quoted as
saying.
