Process Paper
For this years National History Day project, I chose Carl Jung. The topic of Exploration,
Encounter, and Exchange, allowed for many possible topics that would make a great project.
While there were many groups and historical figures that displayed this years theme, Carl Jung
seemed to be the best fit for our group. While brainstorming topics, we thought of Margaret
Mead, the Counterculture Movement, and even Open Heart Surgery throughout history. We
picked Carl Jung for many reasons. Last year, my partner and I did our research on Sigmund
Freud. Carl Jung had a very strong relationship with Freud and exchanged many ideas and
theories. Researching Carl Jung was a chance to explore more about psychology and expand our
knowledge. All three of us are interested in psychology and thought we would be able to show
Carl Jungs exploration, encounters, and exchanges throughout his lifetime.
Our initial step to beginning this project was conducting research. Carl Jung was known
for his studies in personality, the unconscious and the founder of analytical psychology. I began
by searching for information about his background, his research and his findings. I searched my
schools online databases and found many primary and secondary sources. I looked into
government archives, college websites and other various online archives. I went to the public
library to look for biographies and other books about Carl Jung. The library is a very valuable
resource often forgotten about in todays society. I found books, newspapers, magazines, and
articles as well. After researching for quite a while, it was time to construct our project.
We all easily agreed on creating a website to display our research. We all had made
websites the previous year, and had fun doing it. First, we planned out a layout of how our
website would look, figuring out what the sections of each tab would include. Once we added all

of our media and information, we then adjusted fonts, style and themes. Finally we added
finishing touches to conclude our project.
Carl Jung relates to this years theme of Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in
History, because of his theories and findings he discovered throughout his psychological studies.
Jung explored many types of psychological perspectives similar yet different to Sigmund Freud.
He exchanged his ideas with many other psychologists and colleagues. On a larger scale, he
exchanged his own ideas and theories with the world through his publications, and articles he
wrote. His research throughout subjects such as personality, the unconscious, the psyche and the
ego all helped to create a better understanding of psychology and how the cognitive mind
develops. Along the way, Carl Jung did encounter many people who strongly disagreed with his
ideas, and tried to disprove him. This too, helped to form a greater understanding of psychology
in todays generation.
