Academia in Economics

The following information is intended for PhD students considering the possibility of a
career in academia, or Master students considering PhD studies.

X.1

A career in academia

The following step characterise a 'standard' or 'normal' path. Of course there are
always exceptions to any rule, but in this case they are very rare (and often risky as
well).
X.1.1 1st step: Doctorate ('PhD' at HSG)
(i) Select a good programme that is directed towards the scientific community and
uses standards that are demanding in an international comparison (like the new PhD
in Economics and Finance in St. Gallen).
(ii) Write a very good thesis.
(iii) If possible, attract the interest of people outside your university in your results. If
you are very lucky, you will get comments from more senior people that help to
improve your work considerably.
(iv) If possible, try to publish your results in decent journals (see list below) even
before you finish your PhD. The referee reports of the journal you sent your work to
might help to get many insights and could improve your work considerably. A
successful publication could also be very helpful for the next step in the career.
X.1.2 2nd step ('German' system)
If you stay in a country with a German type system (Germany, German-speaking part
of CH, Austria) you need to do your second PhD, called

HABILITATION.

It need not

necessarily be a second PhD however, because an increasing number of universities

accept a bunch of papers instead, if at least some of them are published decently
(see below). In addition you have to do a presentation and some questions-andanswers type 'exam' with the faculty of the department you intent to submit your
HABILITATION.

In many cases the relevant department will also be the place you will get a junior
position with some teaching load (such a position is called 'Nachwuchsdozent' at the

HSG; they are currently called 'C1' and 'Juniorprofessur' in Germany). There is not
really a functioning national market for such positions and in many cases you will stay
with the department where you did your PhD. Typically such positions are temporary
and have a duration of about 6 years with possible extensions conditional on having
completed the habilitation. They are well paid. There are also other research
orientated funds that might be available during this phase. Getting this type of
funding is useful, because it reduces your teaching load and allows you to spend
more time on doing the really important thing now, namely, writing papers that get
published in good journals quickly.
When you are close to completing your

HABILITATION

you enter a well defined market

of tenured professorships. You will also find out that for getting tenure, just having a
HABILITATION

is only a necessary condition coming from within the German system (it

gets less important year by year). You MUST have a couple of good publications as
well to be considered as a potential candidate for a tenured professorship by some
other university (currently at least in economics your 'home' university will not make
an offer, but this may change in the near future with the introduction of so-called
tenure-track positions). Note that potential employers might also consider other
criteria as well.
X.1.3 2nd step ('US' system)
Entering a country with a US type system (USA, Canada, UK, Netherlands, and
others) after your PhD is one way to avoid the

HABILITATION,

publications, and publications (among a few other things like your ability for good
presentations and whether your research interests are in line with the needs of the
department).
The US type system works differently in many respects. First, there is a functioning
market for positions of assistant professorships directly after the PhD level (usually
you have to leave the university where you did your PhD). In many cases these
assistant professorship are tenure track positions. This means that after a couple of
years a committee of your department will evaluate your work (publications) and
make a tenure decision (in an US Ivy league university expect a probability of about
0-20% of getting tenure, but this probability is negatively correlated with the quality

ranking of a department). So you might get promoted to full tenured professorship, or

you might apply for full professorship outside your university in the US or abroad (for
example in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland). Whether universities in these
countries will hire you will depend not only on your publication record, but also on the
reputation of the US university and your seniority there.
X.1.4 3rd step
Become a tenured professor. It is a good job. Expect a considerably higher teaching
load in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy than in the Anglo-Saxon countries,
the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

X.2

Your scientific reputation

You need to have a good reputation to get the type of job offer you want. This kind of
individual reputation is basically produced by convincing some other person (the
referee and editor of a journal, or the scientific committee of a conference with a high
rejection rate) that you should be allowed to use their forum to present your work.
Publishing a book might do the same trick if you already have a 'brand' name in the
trade. Furthermore, you can 'borrow' reputation to some extend from the institution
that you are working with (e.g. some top university where it is hard to get accepted)
or from a supervisor who consistently 'produced' high quality scholars in the past
(again it is difficult to get her as supervisor).
Publications
In this section I will merely consider publication in refereed journals, because as
already mentioned - publications of books, rarely works in the beginning. The reason
is that you need to send a quality signal to make the reader even look at your
abstract or introduction (there are so many papers around, that only very, very few
will be read by senior economists at all). The signal could either be your 'brand' name
based on past publication records (that you do not have in the beginning, e.g. in step
2) or the name of the journal. For the publication of a book (in economics) it is in
many cases a matter of paying the publisher enough to publish your work. Hence, no
initial positive signal is associated with it.

Journals are the real signal senders. They work by using (in most cases) unpaid
referees (who will remain anonymous to the author) to help the editor to make a
decision whether to publish the paper or not. Several journals have an additional
layer of associate editors between the main editor and the referees. For good
journals the supply of papers is much larger than the demand (could be considerably
more than 10 times). Therefore, it is very difficult to get published, hence the
reputation effect. Time from submission to publication varies but could be anything
between nine months and more than four years. In particular many high quality
journals that have many layers (up to three referees, associate editors, editor) and
use (unpaid) high-quality referees who already have a heavy workload (thus they are
good but slow referees) are particularly notorious for long delays.
The difference in the quality of the journals is dramatic. There are a few 'major'
journals in Economics (see lists below). Having published a paper in such a journal
will greatly enhance your chances on the job market. For your own work, ignoring a
paper published in such a journal that is close to your paper, is not good practise and
will reduce the chances of getting published accordingly. Therefore, everybody has to
keep an eye on these journals.
The following tables provide classifications of journals that are a collection from
several rankings. As always this ranking could still contain a particular subjective
bias, although that should be small due to the use of several sources.

Currently the Economics Department of the HSG uses a Journal Ranking to reduce
the teaching load of professors and Nachwuchsdozenten who are particularly
successful in research. This ranking is contained in the appendix to this chapter.
Presentations
Presenting and defending your ideas at workshops and international conferences is
certainly an important piece in the process of making yourself known and getting
outside comments on your work. However, similar to the journals, there are good,
bad and useless conferences (except for paid holidays). Small focused workshops
are typically never a waste of time and money (in particular when speakers were

selected internationally). Most of their participants are interested in the specific topic
and there is enough time to discuss interesting issues.
Large conferences have a different purpose. In many cases, you may only have 2025 minutes to present your ideas (you basically run an extended ad for your paper
and hope somebody will read it after your presentation) and there will be lots of
parallel sessions. An important distinction between these conferences is whether the
conference keeps a high reputation by rejecting a significant amount of papers (e.g.
about half) or whether it accepts (almost) all papers to maximise audience in order to
maximise income from fees charged to participants (most people only get paid the
travel by their university if they present something). List of conferences can be found
