Community in Action Receives LATA Grant to Launch Womens Art

Cooperative
In July 2014, Community in Action received a $2,500 grant from the Latin American Tourism
Association (LATA) Foundation to launch The Complexo do Alemo Women Art Cooperative (Coop)!

The primary goal of The Womens Art Coop is to inaugurate an incomegenerating platform for marginalized women in Rio de Janeiro,
expanding participants economic horizons. LATA funds are expected to
double or triple once products are sold in local markets. To ensure
longer-term sustainability, the Community in Action and Oca dos
Curumins team will reinvest a percentage of revenue to buy new
materials as the program expands in scope. By combining program
management and implementation outreach experience (from CiA), local
human resources and artistic skill sets (from Oca dos Curumins), and
funding support (from LATA), this innovative Co -op will positively impact
the lives of a selected group of impoverished women in one of Rios most
underserved regions.

Women of all ages will have the opportunity to join this Co -op, learning
from each other to build skills and share artistic best practices. Through
a three phased approach, the Community of Action and Oca dos Curumins
team recruited local women, purchased all supplies, created the

handicraft products, and began distribution in local fairs and

markets. In the longer-term, tourists who travel the Complexo do Alemo
region will also have an opportunity to visit this Womens Art Co -op,
interact with the participants, and purchase products directly from the
group.

Favela women who are able to develop art products and sell them in local
markets will be able to pave the way to a brighter future. The long-term
impact of this initiative is monumental, because it can continue to expand
as more women join and tourism grows in this area of the city. Currently,
thousands of Rios impoverished females face a dismal c areer outlook:
many are single mothers, many have low education levels, and many are
elderly with few employable skills beyond artistic creativity. By
establishing a Women-run Cooperative that unites artists in one of
Rios largest favelas, Community in A ction will provide the first stepping-

stone to change the professional futures for a diverse group of

underprivileged females.

After operating in the Complexo do Alemo since 2004, the Community in

Action team is looking forward to working closely Oca dos Curumins to
implemet and grow The Complexo do Alemo Women Art Cooperative !
On behalf of the entire Community in Actio -Oca dos Curumins team, thank
you / obrigado LATA Foundation!
