Bill would allow specialized plates for MACC Fund

Wisconsin motorists would be able to
purchase a specialized license plate that
would help benefit the Midwest Athletes
Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fund
under a bill that has been introduced by
Rep. Janel Brandtjen (R-Menomonee Falls)
and Duey Strobel (R-Cedarburg).
Assembly Bill 401 would allow a person
interested in supporting the MACC Fund to
purchase a plate for the regular vehicle
registration fee along with a $15 fee for
the special plates and a $25 payment that
would go toward the MACC Fund.
The bill was unveiled during a news
conference at Children's Hospital in
Wauwatosa Dec. 7. John McGlocklin, president and co-founder of the MACC Fund.
McGlocklin noted the fund was founded by
he and then-Milwaukee Bucks announcer
Eddie Doucette 39 years ago. In the first
year of the fund, $35,000 was raised and
the cure rates for childhood cancer were
20 percent. The fund has now raised $55
million, while cure rates are now around
80 percent, McGlocklin said.
Brandtjen explained that she was
asked about proposing such a bill after
Menomonee Falls residents Mattnew and
Tricia Verhaalen created the "Childhood
Cancer" license plate to benefit the MACC
Fund. The Verhaalens lost their daughter

24th Year

eptember 1st ushered in the 24th

Anniversary of Friends of Nature.
We have seen many changes over the
years. We grew from 1,000 sq. feet to
our current 12,000 sq. feet. We endured
a major remodeling of the entire shopping
center in 2011 and now we are battling
the reconstruction of the intersection of
Main Street and Pilgrim Road. There is a
light at the end of the tunnel. Within the
next few days the roads and mall
entrances will all be open making it convenient to shop at Friends of Nature.
The past few years have seen major
changes in the Dog and Cat Food industry with acquisitions and mergers of some
major popular brands to other large Pet
Food manufacturers and distributors. This
has resulted in us having access to exciting new products previously unavailable
and now being added weekly.
Pet parents want the very best food for

their pets and Friends of Nature prides

itself on having a large selection of holistic dog and cat foods that include limited
ingredient, grain free, and freeze dried
foods.
Friends of Nature has the largest selection of Raw Frozen Dog and Cat food in
Menomonee Falls and the surrounding
communities. Stop in and see our wall of
freezers filled to the brim with all the
major brands of food and bones including
Stella and Chewys, Tuckers and Fresh is
Best which are all made in Wisconsin.
There are many really great foods and
we try to have most of them but if there is
a food we dont carry just tell us and we
can special order it for you and then have
it within a few days. There is really no
one best food so our staff is trained to
help you make a decision based on the
nutritional needs and life style of your pet.

The Germantown Historical Society

would like to say thank you to the
sponsors of the 2015 Oktoberfest for
helping us put together another
successful year

From the better late than never column. I would like to share my sincere gratitude to everyone involved in this
21st Hunsrucker Oktoberfest at Dheinsville Park. I am proud to announce that this year was one of the most successful
to date! Our attendance was up, sales were up, and the weather was awesome.
I cannot say enough about the volunteers, along with our members,we had a ton of kids from the high school helping before, during,
and after the event. Thank you all for being there and we hope to see you in 2016. Once again, a portion of the village tourism fund was donated.
We were also happy that Sendik's stepped up and once again became our presenting level sponsor. Along with these, many area businesses donated
not only money, but time and energy to help us succeed. I really think most business owners realize that having a group hold an event of this size,
anywhere in the village, is a good thing for the whole village. And we plan on doing what we have been doing for many years to come.
Please mark your calendars for September 24 and 25, 2016! "Oktoberfest is in September". That's a fact you must remember.
Jeff Dhein, Oktoberfest Chairman

Germantowns traditional breakfast with Santa

Twas early on a Sunday morning in
the little Village of Germantown that all
the children woke up to the clatter of
reindeer hooves as Mr and Mrs Santa
Claus arrived for the Germantown
Kiwanis sponsored Breakfast With
Santa. It is a tradition here in
Germantown, Wisconsin for families to
come to the Kiwanis event to enjoy a
wonderful All-You-Can-Eat pancake
breakfast, and spend time with Santa
and Mrs.Claus. Moms and Dads bring
their cameras to capture those treasured photos as their children enjoy
their magical moment with Santa.
Breakfast With Santa, sponsored by
the Germantown Kiwanis Club, is a
chance for Germantown familes to get
into the holiday spirit with an All-YouCan-Eat Pancake breakfast and all the
trimmings, plus a photo with Santa and
Mrs. Claus. Once again this year Santa
will bring his reindeer. Thats right, real
reindeer. There will be photo opportunities with the reindeer as well. The
event will be held Sunday, December
20, 2015 from 8 AM until Noon at the
Florian Park Convention Center,
N111W18611
Mequon
Road
in
Germantown.
Germantown Moms and Dads are
encouraged to bring their cameras for
Christmas photos with Santa, Mrs.
Claus and their reindeer. The full breakfast meal includes pancakes, eggs,
sausages and all the fixings. The
Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast has become
a Germantown family tradition. The
MacArthur School 4th and 5th Grade
choir will lead the hall in Christmas carols. The Germantown High School choir
will also perform. Children may view
Christmas movies in Santas Workshop.
With all of the stress of the holidays
upon us, this is one event that is meant
to take the pressure off Mom for a day
and allow each family to get those
treasured family photos for Christmas.
It will be a memorable experience for
every child in Germantown.

Asked if the event is a fund raiser

for Kiwanis, Germantown Kiwanis
President Dwayne Ketterer smiled and
said, We wouldnt be doing it just to
raise money. We plan the event hoping
to break even on the cost. He added,
This is an event put on for our community. We do it for the smiles it brings
to the children just to see the looks
on their faces when they get to talk
with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thats priceless.
Germantown Kiwanis is a volunteer
organization under the charter of the
Kiwanis International. It is comprised
of local residents, businesses and members of civic organizations and schools
who seek to promote projects to benefit the children of our community.
Breakfast With Santa tickets may be
purchased for $12.00 apiece at the
door. Ages 2-10 are $10.00, under 2 are
free. Save $2.00 per ticket by buying
them in advance from a Kiwanis member or by purchasing them at Aldos
Pizza & Pub on Pilgrim Road, and the
First Bank Financial Centre on Mequon
Road.
Breakfast With Santa is supported
by
the
Deutschtadt
Heritage
Foundation, SERVPRO of Milwaukee
North and SERVPRO of NE Waukesha
County, A&B Contractors, LLC, Dental
Professionals, and the Village of
Germantown Tourism and Betterment
Fund.

Sussex board approves changes for proposed subdivision

Plans for a 73-lot subdivision in the
village of Sussex are moving forward
following a joint meeting of the Sussex
Village Board and the village's Plan
Commission Dec. 8.
The subdivision is proposed on land
east of Maple Avenue and south of
Clover Drive. The Village Board changed
the land use portion of the
Comprehensive Plan from agricultural
and open lands to medium single family residential.
During a public hearing on the land
use change, developer Wade Balson said
the subdivision is divided between the
village of Sussex and the town of
Libson. He said the town of Lisbon portion of the development would address
stormwater issues while the Sussex
portion would contain the roads. He
said an attempt would be made to keep
the two existing tree lines on the site.

He said the lot sizes would range from

12,000 to 22,000 square feet.
During the public hearing, a Lisbon
resident said that stormwater should be
retained so flooding doesn't occur.
Sussex Village Administrator Jeremy
Smith late read a letter from a resident
which stated that the residents of a
subdivision directly south along
Northview Drive do not want to be connected to the new subdivision, as the
existing subdivision has narrow streets,
no curbs or sidewalks and no streetlights. The letter stated that the new
subdivision, if connected to the existing one, would bring additional traffic
and would be a safety hazard for many
residents.
The Village Board and the Plan
Commission then held a joint public
hearing to review a request to change
the zoning from A-1 Agricultural to RS-

3 Single Family District with a Planned

Overlay District. Residents repeated
similar concerns during the rezoning
public hearing.
During the public hearing, Balson
said he has met with Lisbon and
Waukesha County officials about
addressing stormwater issues for the
project. He said test borings were done
to determine where bedrock was located, and said no blasting will occur for
basements on the bottom two-thirds of
the property. In portions of the upper
third of the property where there is
seven feet of cover, basements will be
located higher and the property will be
graded to account for that. Balson also
said it does not appear blasting will
need to occur to install sewer. He said
the subdivision would receive sewer and
water service from the village of Sussex.
During the rezoning public hearing,

Lisbon resident Jane Glodoski asked if

homes in the subdivision south of the
new project would also get sewer and
water service. Smith said the new subdivision would be in the village of
Sussex and would get sewer and water
service. Smith said if the subdivision
directly south in the town of Lisbon
wanted water service, that would
require an intermunicipal agreement
between the town and village.
"That hasn't been forthcoming yet,"
he said.
The Village Board approved the land
use change. After additional discussion
by the commission, the rezoning
change was supported. The Village
Board then approved the zoning
change, with Trustee Pat Tetzlaff voting
against the change.

after the diagnosis involved medical
treatment while she was treated at the

"She just showed us what it means

He said the proposed license plate

there is a requirement a minimum of

"I decided as a pay it forward

The plate is designed by graphic
artist Sandy Ploy and includes a handprint from Alison Verhaalen. Ploy said

Hartung scores 39 as Hamilton beats Horlick

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

Hamilton's Jacob Hartung converted six three point

baskets on the way to scoring 39 points against Racine
Horlick Dec. 4, as the Chargers won the nonconference
game, 76-63.
Horlick took the early lead, as a basket by Devontra
Thomas-Kumpala gave the Rebels a 16-9 lead at the
12:05 mark of the first quarter. But Hamilton answered
with two three-point baskets to tie the score at 17-17
with just over nine minutes left before halftime and
took the lead on a three point basket by Lucas Semb at
the 6:33 mark of the first half. Horlick stayed close to
Hamilton and entered halftime trailing 33-31.
Consecutive three point baskets by Hartung gave
Hamilton a 48-36 lead with 11:33 remaining. But
Horlick stayed close, and a three point basket by Joe
Garcia III cut the Chargers lead to 55-49 with 6:12
remaining. By then, Hamilton took advantage of
opportunities at the free throw line, converting five
free throws over two minutes to open up a 63-43 lead
with 4:08 remaining. The Chargers then converted
seven more free throw opportunities to close out the
game.
Hamilton had a 3-0 overall record following the
game. After the game, Hamilton Coach Andy Cerroni
said it took time for his team to adjust to Horlick's

quickness.
"That was not a good start but we were able to overcome it. That was a test of what we were made of
early," Cerroni said.
He also noted that the second half was a change
from the first half, where Horlick got several opportunities at the free throw line after being fouled by
Hamilton. In the second half, Cerroni said his team did
a better job of playing without fouling while the
Chargers also forced fouls on the other side of the court
in second half.
"I was pretty proud of our kids of how they handled
pressure and made good decisions in pressure situations and knocking down free throws at the end,"
Cerroni said.
The Chargers open the Greater Metro Conference
portion of the schedule against West Allis Central Dec.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Germantown rallies to top Hamilton

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Germantown girls basketball

team changed the pace late in second
half against Hamilton Dec. 8, going on
an 11-2 run on the way to a 63-58 nonconference win over the Chargers.
Germantown took control in the
first half, as a basket by Piper Brown
gave Germantown a 21-12 lead with less
than eight minutes before halftime.
But Hamilton cut in to the lead and a
layup by Taylor Klug tied the score at
28-28. Brown finished the scoring for
the first half with two free throws with
38 seconds remaining.
Hamilton had the advantage during
the early part of the second half, as a

Chargers a 44-38 lead with 14:13
remaining. A three-point basket by
Fierst two minutes later prompted a
Germantown time out. The Warhawks
then cut into the Hamilton lead, as a
layup by Kenzie Schmitz made the score
50-49 in favor of Hamilton. A threepoint basket by Chloe Bingenheimer at
the 6:41 mark was then followed by a
basket Megan Ische, who converted a
layup at the 6:03 mark after a teammate stole the ball on Hamilton's end of
the court. Those points were part of an
11-2 run that gave Germantown a 61-62
lead with 3:01 remaining.
Hamilton cut the lead to 61-57 following a free throw by Macy Williams
with 35 seconds remaining, but could
not get any closer.
Afterward, Germantown Coach Matt
Stuve noted his team had easier games
within the previous week.
"It took them awhile to realize you
still want to attack and get after them,"
Stuve said. (Hamilton's) guards are as
good as you're going to see athletically
and skill wise," Stuve said.

Schmitz was the leading

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only

we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our

Falls keeps current restrictions on raising chickens

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Menomonee Falls Village Board

opted not to pursue changes in current
ordinances which regulate the raising of
chickens.
Currently, the raising of chickens is
limited
to
agricultural
areas.
Approximately a year ago, Trustee Chris
Smolik brought forward a request to
discuss options for changing the ordinance allow for the raising of chickens
in other areas of the community.
During a Village Board Committee of
the Whole meeting Dec. 7, Trustee Steve
Raymonds said the item was first sent
to the Plan Commission, which
Raymonds said "didn't want to touch it
with a 10 foot pole" and sent it back to
the Village Board without a recommendation. The matter was then sent to

the General Government Committee to

see if it could be addressed through the
police powers provision of village ordinances. The committee has reviewed
ordinances in other communities
involving the regulation of chickens,
and reviewed options of ordinances
where chickens would be allowed with
the consent of adjacent neighbors with
no regulation of lot size. He said the
idea is similar to an ordinance in the
city of Wauwatosa.
"We thought it was our duty to come
up with some form of regulation or
ordinance to discuss and vote on,"
Raymonds said.
Smolik said "we need to keep this as
simple as possible" and said people for
or against the raising chickens in the
village "is not going to be a very large
amount of people."

Smolik noted that in the city of

Milwaukee, 85 permits have been issued
for the raising of chickens since their
ordinance was first proposed.
Raymonds added he heard from
seven residents on the matter.
Trustee David Glasgow asked that
since there is no restriction on lot size
where chickens would be allowed, how
would small residential lots be
addressed? Smolik said his opinion was
"until my neighbor starts paying my
mortgage they don't have a right to be
telling me what to do on my land."
Trustee Bonnie Lemmer said she has
talked with residents "who were
adamant they would storm this place if
little quarter-acre parcels are allowed
chickens." She said that while a neighbor next door may not object to chickens, other residents may object. She

also said that once consent is received

from neighbors, that would be permanent.
"I'm in real estate, it's going to
affect the ability to sell your house. It
might affect the ability to get decent
market price for the house," Lemmer
said.
Village President Joe Helm said
chickens are "farm animals (and) inappropriate in residential areas."
Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald said
an ordinance calling for neighbor consent is "an extremely flawed base ordinance."
"Do not give us a code the pits
neighbor against neighbor," Fitzgerald
said.
The board voted by a 4-3 vote to
keep current ordinances in place and
make no changes.
