Peer Educators of the Month: October

Volume 15, Issue 2

December 2015
Inside this issue:

Chris Hakes
Chris is a tremendous asset to The
Learning Center, serving as a walk-in
tutor five days a week for both business and math courses. He is a one-toone tutor with four different students
across multiple disciplines including
math, accounting, and finance. As the
Co-Lead Business Tutor, he is always
taking on additional responsibilities
such as assisting with class visits and
holding review sessions for the other
tutors. This month, Chris surpassed 400
tutoring hours and is working towards
level three CRLA certification.
Thank you, Chris, for your continued
dedication to The Learning Center!

Shannon Lavargna
Shannon works with five individual
students for one-to-one tutoring in the
areas of Political Science, Fine Arts,
and History, and mentors six students. She assists students in the Commit to Success Program and the Scholarship Retention Program and connects with a diverse student population. Several students have raved
about her tutoring and mentoring
abilities stating that Shannon is making a positive difference in achieving
(their) academic success. She continually takes on additional assignments
with enthusiasm, despite her full course
load to graduate a semester early. When she graduates in December
from the University Honors Program,
we will certainly have big shoes to fill!

Special points
of Interest:

Congratulations to
Chris Hakes and
Shannon Lavargna
for being named

500+ Tutoring/Mentoring Hours

Paul Nguyen
Raj Phadtare has been a math peer educator for the
Learning Center since the fall of 2013 and has earned all
three levels of CRLA certification. He has over 360 hours
of tutoring service and serves in multiple roles. As a class
assistant for MAT 230, Raj assists Dr. Megan Paddack during class and works outside of class with groups of students
to review relevant course material when students are preparing for exams. With four evening shifts of walk-in tutoring each week, Raj is a valuable resource to all students
in their current math classes. As the Lead Math Tutor, Raj
also has earned the respect of all the math tutors by being
the goto tutor when questions arise.
After joining the Learning Center team as a second semester freshman in the spring of 2013, Kaitlin Shaughnessy
has over 300 hours of service. This is quite remarkable
since she has spent the fall semester student teaching at
Hillside Middle School. Kaitlin has been a class assistant for
numerous sections of MAT 106 & 206 and MAT 130. In
addition, she has worked with students in both walk-in tutoring and as a 1-1 tutor while earning CRLA certification in
Levels I and II, and served as a JumpStart mentor in the
summer of 2014. She also has been a teacher in the
Breakthrough Manchester program for the past two summers. Kaitlin is certainly dedicated to the academic success
of SNHU students as well as to the success of students in the
surrounding community.

Christopher Hakes has been a tutor for The Learning Center since the fall of 2013. Since then, he has taken on various roles as a walk-in tutor, one-to-one tutor, and class assistant across multiple disciplines including accounting, finance, and math. Currently, Chris works walk-in tutoring five
days a week and has four students he works with individually, some of whom are in the Retake with Success Program.
In the spring of 2015, Chris was named the Lead Business
Tutor. As the Co-Lead Business Tutor, Chris takes on even
more responsibilities such as assisting with class visits and
holding review sessions for the other tutors. Semester after
semester, Chris has proven to be an outstanding tutor, as
evidenced by the many students he works with on a daily
basis. Accumulating over 400 tutoring hours is an incredible
achievement, and The Learning Center is lucky to have him!
With over 540 hours of tutoring service, Paul Nguyen has
assisted countless SNHU students in their math courses. He
has served as the class assistant in the Three Year Programs
statistics and calculus classes as well as currently assisting in
two MAT 130 classes. He works with nine students individually this semester and covers two shifts of walk-in tutoring.
Paul has earned all three levels of CRLA certification. He
consistently is a resource for the other math tutors and his
positive, upbeat attitude is infectious.

2015 Jumpstart Reunion

This years annual Jumpstart Reunion was held on November 17th in
the Tuckerman Hall Common area.
The event consisted of students
who participated in Jumpstart
earlier in the year as well as their
mentors and The Learning Center
staff.
The reunion was kicked off with
some pizza, salad, and refreshments as the students got a
chance to see everyone in one
place for the first time since
Jumpstart. Once the food was
finished, a video was shown displaying over 80 pictures of
Jumpstart week. The video
brought laughs and memories to
everyone in attendance.
After the video, the students enjoyed a short activity with Kathy
Willis. This activity involved students rolling dice until they rolled
a certain number. Once successful
they got to open a box wrapped
in gift wrapping paper. This box
opened to smaller and smaller
boxes until the last box was
reached. The last student to open
the box received prize of a Study

Pack inside.
After the activity Selina Marcille
ran a game of Mafia. This
game took the remainder of the
period and included students,
mentors, and The Learning Center
staff. Students were assigned
roles including mafia members, a
doctor, and a detective, and the
group had to collaborate to determine which JumpStart students
among the group were the mafia
members before too many innocent JumpStart students were
eliminated.
Overall it was another successful
year for the Jumpstart Reunion
with just over 20 students out of
42 in attendance. Everyone enjoyed this reunion and it was nice
to see the jumpers before they go
off into their first winter break.
This year consisted of an amazing
group of jumpers and we cant
wait to see what their future at
SNHU holds.
Below are photos of the
Jumpstart Reunion

Congratulations to Melanie
Friese, the winner of the 2015
Candy Corn Counting Contest.
Melanie had the closest guess
out of over 50 other participants.
Melanie sealed her victory with
a guess of 402 candy corns.
The jar contained 406!
Melanie was rewarded with
the jar and bragging rights
with her second win in this
contest.
