Taste of Rockaway Beach is Here
Thanksgiving was just training
for Rockaways biggest food extravaganza. With 15 places on the tour,
this Saturdays Taste of Rockaway
Beach is going to be the biggest yet.
This will be the fifth Taste of Rockaway Beach event since it started in
December 2013 and it has grown
to be one of the most anticipated
events in town. People are getting
used to this event and really look
forward to it, Robert Kaskel, event
organizer and Thai Rock owner,
said. Its really making a connection with folks that are in Rockaway
and beyond. People from Brooklyn
are saying theyll be here. When we
first started, we had to work hard
just to explain what this event was
to people, and now people just have
to ask when the date is.
The event takes place twice a
year, once in the spring and once in
the early winter. On Saturday, December 6, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.,
participants will have to strategize

wisely as there will be a total of 15
restaurants to visit. For those not
familiar, Taste of Rockaway Beach
is a food tour that is done on your
own schedule and your own pace
between the allotted event hours.
For an amazing deal of just $10,
you can purchase a pass at any of
the participating restaurants in advance. The pass allows you a sample of what each of the 15 restaurants offers. In order to encourage
people to buy their passes early, so
that the restaurants can better prepare, for the first time the pass will
cost $15 if purchased the day of the
event. If you cant make it to one of
the restaurants to purchase in advance, tickets are also available to
purchase online for the first time at
www.Rockawayunion.org. The online system adds taxes and a small
fee, so each online ticket comes to
less than $12, which is still a bargain
from the day-of price. Tickets purchased online can be picked up at

minute, but even at $15, its still a
great deal. It would be a great deal
at twice that price, Kaskel said.
Bellies will indulge in a variety of
cuisine this year from Italian to Thai
to Uzbek, American, Peruvian and
even Chinese. Its getting to a point
where I dont think everyone can
go to all of the places. Even 10 is a
lot, but this is great. Now you really
have to strategize and decide where

you really want to go, Kaskel said.

ROCK SOUP Aims to Fund

Local Projects
Lets make soup! ROCK SOUP,
a brand new community initiative, aims to provide funding
for creative local projects. Each
month, a community dinner will
be held to provide micro-grants
to those with good ideas.
The basic idea is that every month,
starting December 12, the community is invited to come together
to share a meal, enjoy art, learn
about creative projects happening
in Rockaway and then back the
one that they think would be most
beneficial to the peninsula. At each
event, attendees can donate what
they want and they will receive
soup cooked by local volunteers
while hearing four presentations
ranging from art, urban agriculture, social justice, entrepreneurship, education, technology and
more, and then a vote is held to
fund one of the projects with the
money raised from the dinner. The
dinner is open to anyone, but all
proposed projects must benefit the
Rockaway community. The whole
project is by the community for the
community and is run entirely on
donations by volunteers.
ROCK SOUP is a collaboration
between board members Giovanna
Maselli (Founder of Rockaway Summer and HIVE), Adam Wiesehan
(Architect), Isabella Scott (Founder of Herb & Dye Rockaway), Kalin
Callaghan (Organizer at Rockaway
Wildfire), and Suzanne Riggs (Educator and Community Organizer).
The idea was inspired by the successful Detroit Soup, which started in
2010. Since its launch, Detroit Soup
has provided more than $106,000 to
118 projects.
ROCK SOUP introduced itself
to the community on November
14. The official first dinner will take
place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 12. It will be held at

the Rockaway Retreat House at 164
Beach 91st Street. Guests can donate
what they want but a minimum of
$5 to $10 is suggested. The winning
proposal receives all the donated

Theres nothing like old friends.

Someone sent out an email eight
years ago saying hey, lets get together. Lets get together at something besides weddings and funerals. And every year since, these
friends for life have met at a bar
in The City. Some guys fly in from
across the country just to be there.
Its become an annual cant-miss
because were old enough now to
appreciate whats important.
Even in a tightly knit place like
Rockaway people in their late
twenties and early 30s drift away
from each other. Some get married and move to Jersey or The Island. It doesnt seem that far away
but you visit them once. Others
get jobs in other states and others just disappear for no apparent
reason. A guy, as close as a brother, just more or less vanishes and
no one knows why. How could a
guy so close to so many, a guy part
of the fabric of the gang, just disappear? And no one knows why.
Some go on a career path that
just pulls them away. Some have
troubles no friends can help.
Some guys are content where they
are; some want to spread their
wings and see the world. Things
change.
But then you have a reunion.
And the laughs and the tears flow.
Yes, the tears. Tears because no
words can convey how much
these friends mean to you. How
central they are to who you were.
And who youve become. You
cant turn back the clock but you
love them because you wouldnt
have had a youth without them.
All of these friends, from long ago,
shaped you in the most profound
ways.
And on the night of this reunion youre young again for a few
hours. One guys shows wearing a
sweat suit and a friend says, You
look like a Russian hit man.
Another friend shows up late

and doesnt say hello to his buddy he hasnt seen in a few years.
No, he doesnt say hello to the guy
whos put on a few pounds. He
says, Wheres your neck?
The bald, fat, and hair dye jokes
come first but most of the time is
spent smiling and laughing on
memory lane. It might be thirty
or forty years later but we wonder
how sexy Spanish teacher Miss
Jiminez looks these days. We know
weve aged but she couldnt have.
The stories and memories made
us laugh and cringe. Some guys
stole, well, borrowed, the Drivers
Ed car one night. Some bolted
on the bill at Beefsteak Charlies
only about a million times. Yeah,
you didnt want to be the last one
at the table while the rest of your
friends went to the bathroom.
And then there were the house
parties when somebodys parents
were away. Epic, crazy times you
wouldnt change. Well, maybe a
couple of things.
More than one says, were lucky
to be alive. Everyone agrees.
Damn right.
The night ends and the old crew,
spread far and wide, will head
back to the present, to their families and new friends they love,
wherever that may be. Things
change, yep. But one thing remains forever: the love you have
for our old friends.
Cant wait til next year.

BOARD 14 MEETING

Vibrant discussions on a
number of issues took place
once again at Community
Board 14s monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 8.
Board members and residents
in the audience were most vocal about a recent announcement by the Parks Department to install staircases in
12 places along the length of
boardwalk where ramps were
planned to be built, four of
them in Phase 3 (Beach 108th
to 126th Streets), as brought
up in a letter from the Rockaway Civic Association. One
board member made a motion to recommend stairs and
ramps to be built on the street
side for entrances in Phase 3,
which led to a cacophony of
voices expressing confusion
and anger over the plan, especially whether stairs would be
placed on the beach side of the

boardwalk as well. Ultimately
the motion carried and will go
to the Parks Department for a
review.
The boards Parks and Public Safety Committee also went
over plans to restore several
acres of Sunset Cove at the beginning of Broad Channel. The
west-side area, located next to
the baseball fields, received
$7 million in grants from a variety of organizations to improve the marshes, increase
storm resistance, remove
contamination, and build a
walkway for the public to use.
Dan Mundy Sr., a board member, stated that Sunset Cove
was formerly a tidal wetland
and the restored area will be
a great benefit to both Broad
Channel and the general public. A motion to support the
plan passed unanimously.
The committee also once
again took up the issue of adding more surfing beaches in

the Arverne by the Sea location. In the prior meeting on
November 10 the board voted to approve surfing beaches on 110111th Streets and
114115th Streets, though
Chairperson Dolores Orr did
indicate that she was not sure
lifeguards would accept the
idea of alternating surfing/
swimming beaches. Figures
were given out stating that
the City made $4,212 from
the surfing schools in the
area against $332,000 for the
schools themselves. Committee co-chair Jose Velez said
that the surfing schools there
now are subject to contract
review like any other summer camp contracted by the
City. A motion was eventually brought up by John Cori to
support The Dunes and Waters Edges proposal to make
alternate swimming/surfing
beaches from 60th62nd
Streets (swimming), 6365th
Streets (surfing), and 6668th
Streets (swimming). The motion passed after some debate
with a few negative votes.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
gave a brief presentation on
a planned $15 million upgrade to the Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant. DEP
stated that the upgrade will
reduce the nitrogen levels
leaked into Jamaica Bay via
a biologic nutrient removal
project. Aeration tanks, mixers, and platforms will be improved or installed to facilitate the change. Mundy Sr.,
who also heads the Jamaica
Bay Eco-Watchers, outlined
how the project would work to

is undertaking a significant
strategic planning process to
direct its future and is seeking community input. On December 16, the hospital will be
holding an information gathering session so it can include
community input in the plan.
During this session, staff will
be conducting a SWOT analysis to ask for your input on St.
Johns Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.
The session will be facilitated
by a consultant who is working closely with the Hospital to
make this happen. The hospital says, your input is necessary and essential to our future.

St. Johns to better serve the

complete, with construction
expected to begin by January
31, 2017 and completed by the
end of 2019. To the chagrin of
many, the plan will do nothing
to alleviate the odious smell
that frequently emanates from
the plant.
The public speaking section included an update from
a Build it Back representative
providing local statistics from
the City program that will be
posted on Community Board
14s website in the near future. A
representative from the Department of Housing Preservation
and Development (HPD) mentioned a meeting discussing future plans for Edgemere taking
place on Saturday, December
12 at the Cornerstone Community Center on Beach 41st
Street. Other issues brought up
by the public included opposition to Select Bus Service and
quality-of-life issues such as
fireworks going off late at night.
In her opening remarks, Orr

mentioned a new Parks Department initiative that could
potentially impact Rockaway.
Parks Without Borders will
seek to remove fencing from
a number of passive city
parks, i.e. those without childrens playgrounds or sports
activities. Orr said that the
only park in Rockaway she
thought might be a candidate
was a spot on Beach 88th Street
and the bay where kayakers
can take off from. Board member Steve Cooper suggested
Rockaway Community Park in
Edgemere, which was a former
dumping ground but is now
passive and really beautiful.
Orr said it may be eligible due
to only having one entrance.
Orr also provided an update
on the dormant construction
projects on Beach 4th and 5th
Streets and Beach 94th Streets,
saying that as long as paper is
moving and permits are current both sites are considered
active construction areas. She
mentioned that audits of both
places are frequent and ongoing.
District Manager Jonathan

Gaska spoke about a meeting
he and the Executive Board had
with HPD regarding the halted
construction in the Edgemere
Urban Renewal Area. Following the mortgage crisis in 2008
houses had stopped being
built north of the A train from
Beach 40th Street to Beach
42nd Street, though infrastructure improvements were
still made to the roads. Gaska said that HPD is hopefully
starting the project again soon
at the agreed-upon guidelines
(80-130 percent of the area
median income and one- or
two-family homes only) in late
spring 2016.
Gaska also spoke on the
funding issues surrounding
the Arverne East project. He
stated that the plans would
require $150 million to $300
million in investments to be
built, with the boards preference being that the homes
are sold at 100 percent market rate. Sandy changed a
number of realities, so why
dont we take a fresh look at
the plan? Gaska said. Orr

backed this up stating her
preference for a mini-Jones
Beach recreation and economic development area to
be put instead of more housing in a densely populated
location. The construction of
Arverne East is currently on
hold due to the City wanting
to put affordable housing in
the project as well as issues
relating to the building of a
park as part of the proposal.
Representatives from the
Corrections Department gave
a brief presentation outlining
that they are hiring and offer
a good salary and benefits to
those interesting in becoming a correction officer. More
information can be found on
their website. Board member Danny Ruscillo was commended by a number of colleagues as he prepares to step
down as president of the 100th
Precinct Community Council. Finally, well-wishes were
sent to Parks and Public Safety Committee co-chair John
McCambridge who recently
suffered a heart attack but is
doing well.

It saddens me to report that yet

another elected official has refused
to answer our questions on important transportation issues. Since
mid-August our e-mails asking
for Melinda Katzs opinions were
ignored. Finally, last month we
received a commitment from her
communications director that we
would receive her responses that
same week, even though we would
not be running Melindas photo
with the article. The next day they
said they would not be submitting
answers after all. I cant help but
wonder if it was the picture.
Its true that borough presidents
have little real power but they do
have a budget and do have some
influence in City government for
effecting needed improvements in
the borough. Instead, the Queens
BP office seems more like a chamber of commerce, discretionary
funding, public service messages
and concerts. All good stuff, but not
what we really need.
Queens and particularly Rockaway residents would be better
served by a Borough President
focused on upgrading Queens
third-world transportation system that Rockaway residents and
our 2.3 million Queens neighbors
struggle with every day.
To demonstrate how bad
Queens transportation is, I used
the MTA trip planner to see how
long it would take from my home
on 127th Street in Rockaway to
Melindas office in Kew Gardens
on a Monday afternoon. Best
case scenario was one hour, 28
minutes. To my old high school
in Flushing? 2 hours 17 minutes.
Somebody should go to jail.
What is your opinion on the following transportation issues and

Melinda has the unique opportunity to demand real infrastructure
investment for NYCs most underserved borough by advocating for
important long-term projects such
as reactivating the old Rockaway
Beach Line, AKA QueensRail.
We can only hope that Melinda
and other representatives who
have not yet taken a stand on this
important issue dont throw our
transportation future under the
bus by trading this priceless rightof way for some fleeting political
capital. If they do, they will have
to bear the responsibility for destroying something that cannot
ever be replaced. Think Pennsylvania Station.
What we need are representatives with the courage to stand up
for whats needed and the vision
to see beyond the end of their
current terms.

Sandy Hook Victim

Remembered Locally

Jessica Rekos was a six-year-old

girl who loved animals, especially
horses and whales. After watching the movie Free Willy with
her Nana at age 5, she developed
a love for whales, especially orcas. She read books about them
and watched every Free Wil-
ly movie, making sure to pause

them and take notes about facts
she learned, in what she called
whale research. In the summer
of 2012, Rekos family took her
whale watching in Cape Cod and
promised to take her every summer.
On December 14, 2012, Rekos
boarded her bus and went to
school at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. She never
came home that day. Rekos was
one of 20 children and six staff
members whose lives were taken
in a shooting that left the country
heartbroken.
Recovering from our own
Sandy tragedy less than two
months before, the pain of what
happened in Newtown was felt
throughout the peninsula. Following the shooting, Maura
Buckley of Breezy Point formed
Operation Kid Comfort and collected hundreds of teddy bears,
which were distributed to the
children of Newtown. In Roxbury, a playground resides on the
bayside beach since December
2013 in memory of Mary Sherlach, a teacher and school psychologist who was killed in the
shooting. The playground was

the result of a project called The
Sandy Ground: Where Angels
Play, in which playgrounds were
built in Hurricane Sandy-impacted areas, in memory of the
shooting victims from Sandy
Hook Elementary, connecting
the two tragedies and creating
something positive.
The American Princess boat
passes this playground each time
it heads out of Riis Landing for a
whale or seal watching tour and
Jessica Rekos joins each trip in
spirit. Within the cabin of the boat
is a plaque dedicated to Rekos
honoring her memory. The American Princess is about one of roughly seven boats around the northeast which carry these plaques so
Rekos can be a part of each whale
watching trip they go on.
Captain Frank DeSantis of the
America Princess explained that
the plaque comes from Whale
and Dolphin Conservation
(WDC), an organization that Rekos family chose to support as
part of the Jessica Rekos Foundation. The foundation supports
WDCs Jessica Rekos Fellowship
for Orca Conservation, which
focuses on research and conservation initiatives for orca whales
in the Pacific Northwest, one of
the best areas to view orcas. The
foundation also supports WDCs
internship program, allowing ten
interns the opportunity to gain
experience in WDCs living laboratory. WDC created plaques in
Rekos honor and asked various
whale watching vessels to display
them.
As soon as we were asked to
hang this plaque up in her honor, we said yes, DeSantis said.
In this way, her spirit can still be
with the whales. She went whale
watching in Cape Cod and now
were showing her the whales of
New York with each trip.
The plaque has hung in the
cabin since 2013. Although there
are no orcas in the area, Rekos
gets a prime show of humpback
whales, dolphins and other species on each American Princess
tour, which gets better every year.

colleges and universities are having their Offices of Diversity and
Inclusion issue what they consider to be the best practices for
inclusive holiday celebrations,
to ensure campuses remain politically correct, inoffensive and
emotionally safe this season. At
Cornell University the beloved tradition of mistletoe is under attack,
with the school claiming the parasitic plant, under which lovers are
expected to kiss, doesnt create an
"environment of inclusion." University of Tennessee-Knoxvilles
set ofguidelinessuggests holiday
parties should have no emphasis
on religion or culture, but rather build upon workplace relationships and team morale. The
school says if a gift exchange is
planned, the university says calling it Secret Santa is inappropriate. Instead, the exchange should
be referred to in a more general

way, such as practical joke gift exchange or secret gift exchange.
AtOhio State University, greenery, white lights, snowflakes and
bows are deemed appropriate;
however, the school would prefer
they avoid the colors red and green
to convey an inclusive holiday
spirit. While specific recommendations were not given at the University of Illinois-Springfield, the
schools Holiday Resources page
suggests employers should ensure their holiday party is not a
Christmas party in disguise and
keep all decorations and food
general and nonspecific to religion. I guess the school felt it had
little choice as everyone knows
how sneaky and insidious people
can be with sneaking Christmas
into their holiday spirit! That being said, I think that, henceforth,
all tuition at the school should be
payable only in monopoly money
to ensure nobody is offended with

Thank goodness the spirit of
Christmas is alive and well in our
community here in Broad Channel. This past Saturday, toys were
collected at the Broad Channel
Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at the BCAC field for special
delivery by Santa to children undergoing treatment for cancer.
The next day our local VFW was
busy hosting the 2nd Annual
NYFAC Toy Run where toys were
collected for yet another special
delivery by the jolly old man
himself to families with children
impacted by autism. Christmas
lights shine brightly along the
length of Cross Bay Boulevard
while many houses are alight
with manger scenes, Christmas
trees, Santa Claus and other harbingers of this magnificent holiday. The good news is that, as far
as I know, no special snowflakes
have complained that such activities and accessories have offended them or required them
to seek out a safe space.

December Boardwalk Update

Whats going on with the
boardwalk? The Parks Department recently released
its boardwalk update for the
month of December.
Phase 1 from Beach 86th
to Beach 97th Street is open.
The remaining planting on
the land and beachside of the
boardwalk will be completed this month. You may see
small work crews completing punch-list items. Phase
2 from Beach 97th to Beach
107th Street is also open,
however construction of the
four remaining beach access
ramps and stairs at Beach
102nd, 101st, 99th and 98th
will be complete and open
early this month and the remaining planting on each
side of the boardwalk will be
completed. Crews will also
complete punch-list items.
In Phase 3, from Beach
108th to Beach 126th Street,
water main relocation is substantially complete. Pipe and
h-pile driving will continue.

In general the work is moving
from east to west with some
exceptions for access locations. You may see extended
work hours Monday through
Friday (until 5:30pm) as well
as Saturday work for pile driving activities. The installation
of the chain linked fencing
is complete and installation
of sand retaining wall panels
and boardwalk pile caps will
continue. Utility installation
under the boardwalk, as well
as sand fill under the boardwalk, will continue in December. Boardwalk plank erection
will commence at the east end
of Phase 3 (near Beach 106th).

Women of Rockaway:
Anita Ruderman of Hot Yoga

Who runs the peninsula?
Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are owned and operated
by females or female co-owners. And they deserve recognition. As part of an ongoing
series, the Rockaway Times is
profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week
is Anita Ruderman, owner of
Hot Yoga.
Anita Ruderman is doing
something unlike anything
else on the peninsula. Its so
hot, its cool, she said. Both
women and men leave Rudermans studio with flushed faces, dripping sweat and feeling
good. They just endured a hot
yoga class, something Ruderman introduced to the peninsula and has been teaching at
Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach on

Beach 116th Street for almost
six years.
Hot Yoga may be relatively new to Rockaway, but Ruderman was first introduced
to the practice about 20 years
ago. I took this class down
in Florida and I didnt know
it was hot yoga, so I had long
pants and long sleeves because I figured it would be air
conditioned and I walk in and
people were wearing bathing
suits. There were nine electric heaters in the room and I
thought I was gonna die, but
I cut my sleeves and my pants
and went through with it and I
was hooked, Ruderman said.
Once I found Bikram Yoga,
that was it for me. I thought,
how can nobody be teaching
this in New York? She made
it her mission to introduce
the practice to places where

it hadnt been taught before,
like Rockaway.
Ruderman has spent more
than 25 years teaching yoga.
She spent some time working
as an office manager for her
husband Ricks family HVAC
plumbing/heating company,
but yoga has been a part of
her career since 1991. Even
when I worked full time, I always taught yoga, she said.
She spent some time training
in Brooklyn and first started teaching at a studio called
Yoga Connection in Manhattan in the early 90s. Ruderman worked for John Nash at
a Bikram Yoga studio in Rego
Park. Some may remember
Rudermans classes from her
days at Harbor Health and Fitness on Beach Channel Drive.
She also opened a studio along
with a partner in Fort Greene,

Brooklyn. At one point, Ruderman was teaching classes out
of her own home.

who I worked for in Rego
Park, knew the landlord of
this building and he suggested that the space could be
perfect for me. He kind of encouraged me to open my studio, as well as my husband.
My husband has always been
behind me, 1000 percent,
Ruderman said. After working at so many other places,
it was a natural progression
to open my own business
and there was a demand for
it here. Its a service for the
community and we have a
nice bunch of yogis here and
likeminded people who want
to get healthy. Ruderman
opened Hot Yoga Rockaway
Beach at 181 Beach 116th
Street in January 2010.
Ruderman says there are
many benefits to Hot Yoga,
also called Bikram Yoga, which
takes place in a room of 100
degrees and 30 to 40 percent
humidity. It is the greatest.
It heals everything. It relieves
tightness, loosens the screws
in your head, keeps your spine
healthy, your head clear, it
improves balance, concentra-

tion and your overall general
health. You get addicted after
a while, Ruderman said, adding that many of her students
attend daily. Once you get
used to the heat, you go into
the room prepared to sweat.
The heat warms your muscles
and allows you to stretch further into a pose and avoid injury and you feel really good.
Each class, lasting from 60
to 75 minutes, incorporates
26 poses and two breathing
exercises. Every pose has a
specific benefit, Ruderman
said, adding that anyone can
do them. She has students as
young as 9 and as old as 80.
Its a non-competitive atmosphere. Everyone is doing
the same thing, trying as hard
as they can and you can rest
when you need to. Youre not
obligated to do every pose,
you could lay on the mat for an
hour, but all of our instructors
are very supportive.
Ruderman holds classes
seven days a week, which are
taught by herself or one of her
other instructors, Emily McNeil, Jeanne Orzano, Missy
Reder, Claire Van Winkle and

Christine Walker. Theyre all
Rockaway girls. We have real
women power out here, Ruderman said. While Rudermans studio is the only one
that offers hot yoga locally,
females tend to dominate the
yoga business on the peninsula. There are a lot of women
that own yoga studios here,
Ruderman said, which is interesting because all of the
gurus that brought yoga to
the west were men, so I dont
really know why its female
dominated. Maybe guys think
youre a sissy if you do yoga instead of going to the gym and
lifting weights. While females
dominate the teaching side of
yoga, Ruderman says she has
several male students that attend her classes.
For Ruderman, the most rewarding part of her business is
seeing how her students transform. I like to see how people
change from that first class.

completely different and you
can see the improvement in
them, she said.
Yoga was a form of healing
for Ruderman herself, who
first took up the practice to
alleviate migraines and fell
in love with it. I never use
the word work with what I do.
Some people say theyre going to work; I say Im going to
teach. This isnt really a job,
its just my life, its what I do,
she said. Ruderman recommends being passionate about
any business venture. Pick
something you really love to
do because owning a business
is a 24/7 job. Even if you dont
have to be there every day,
youre thinking about it all of
the time, she said.

This past Saturday was a

fantastic day on the peninsula! So many Christmas

I think I might have heard
on the news that after all the
Hanukkah lights and Christmas lights were lit here on
the peninsula and in BC,
the astronauts in the International Space Station were
able to see us all the way
from outer space.
What impresses me most
about the Christmas and
Hanukkah
celebrations
here in our neighborhoods

is the non-existence of the
over-reaching political correctness that has hijacked so
much of our lives, especially
this time of year.
I loved seeing Eric Ulrich,
Joe Addabbo, and Phil Goldfeder at all these events,
each one of them saying it
loud and clear: MERRY
CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY
HANUKKAH.

The Rockaway Times
This is the tenth in a series of

articles about the neighborhoods
of Rockaway. In effort to profile
these areas weve talked to residents and business owners about
their little slice of the peninsula.
This week is Far Rockaway.
Thirty-one miles of carbon steel
connect Inwood in Upper Manhattan to what is effectively a different world in the same city. On a
good day, it would take at least two
hours to go from terminus-to-terminus on the A line, the longest
in the New York City subway system. The southern end of the A is
housed in the oldest subway station still in use, opening on July 29,
1869 in what was then and still is
Far Rockaway.
Far Rockaway is often used as a
catch-all for the entirety of the peninsula, or at least the eastern half of
it, but the nominal neighborhood
starts at around Beach 32nd Street
and encompasses everything east
of that, excluding the Bayswater
area (which will be covered next
week). In 1609 Henry Hudson and

his crew were the first Europeans to lay eyes on the Rockaways
and Jamaica Bay, which then was
inhabited by Canarsie Indians.
The land was sold for 31 pounds
of sterling to a Captain Palmer in
1685, then passed along to Richard
Cornell in 1687; the Cornell Cemetery on Caffrey Avenue remains
the only New York City landmark
on the peninsula.
The extension of the Long Island
Railroad in the 1880s led to massive growth for Far Rockaway, both
a tourist destination and a residential area. Between Beach 24th and
Beach 26th Streets a number of
small bungalows were built in the
1920s which now makeup the federally-recognized Far Rockaway
Beach Bungalow Historic District.
By the 1950s, the discontinuation
of the majority of LIRR service to
the Rockaways, a drastic increase
in the amount of public housing, and the subsequent flight of
wealthy residents to the suburbs
led to the end of Far Rockaways

Tis the season. Tis the season to stop and be grateful for
the wonderful things in our
lives and to joy in whatever
it is that is pure and simply
good. The hustle and bustle
has begun, but make it fun
and happy and joyful. Let the
expectation be expelled for a
while and try to do things from
the heart rather than what you
have done every year or what
is expected. As the world becomes more complicated with
more stress ensuing, it is important to alleviate pressure.

Do wonderful things for people during the holiday season,
but on your terms. In other
words, do wonderful things
according to what you are capable and able to do.
The attitude with which you
go about it all speaks volumes
for how you will feel and how
you will make others feel. I believe that whatever we think,
feel and say really becomes
a part of us. Our attitudes
originate in our thoughts and
feelings, so, start with softening the mind and heart and all
will follow. During this time of
gatherings and celebrations,
make the intention in mind,
heart and words be positive
and uplifting.
With all the sadness around
us and in the world among
family members, people we
know, acquaintances, people
in other states and countries we must be lights of goodness
and peace. There is no other
way to be. Can you think of
yourself as a light illuminating the child in front of you,
your spouse, partner, parent,
friend, neighbor, shop owner,
postal worker, UPS delivery
person, opening up across the
country and the world? Spread
good tidings. One person at a
time. Recognize that whatever
is happening is part of the up
and down of life and it all has
meaning personal meaning.
We can only be who we are
and we can only give what
we have to give. The hustle
and bustle can cause a frenzy of having to keep up and
give the utmost and whatever.

Just simplify it all. The best
things in life are free! Thinking along those lines helps us
to realize the meaning and importance of giving with value.
Someone may cherish some
kind words more than any gift
in a big box! Tuning in to the
genuine needs of people is key
to a happy, fruitful season.
Go out of your way to do
one grand act of kindness and
keep it to yourself! It could be
something for an older person or a family or whatever
presents itself to you. It can
be time spent or a meal sponsored or a gift. Every once in a
while, remember that act with
a smile in your heart. This will
nourish you far more than any
spa treatment! (That is not to
say that spa treatments are not
great!!)

For Danny Ruscillo, The Pipes Are Calling

Rockaway is not short on community activists. From John Cori

to Joe Hartigan to the multitude of
civic associations, the peninsula is
full of people who have made their
mission to improve the quality of
lives of Rockaway residents by raising awareness of issues important
to them. Among the most involved
of this group is Danny Ruscillo, the
outgoing president of the 100th Precinct Community Council and a
Community Board 14 member.
Representing your community
is a really good feeling, Ruscillo, 62,
said as he ate an apple Danish and
sipped a coffee at Rockaway Roasters, just down the block from the
100th Precinct. Being a liaison for
the community and the police is almost the same thing for me.
Ruscillo was born and raised in
Bensonhurst. Inspired to help others from a young age, he joined the
Coast Guard beginning in 1970 and
served for six years, including two
on inactive duty. It afforded him
both the opportunity to travelhis
training took place at Guantanamo Bayand serve his country

We did search-and-rescue, he recalled. We went after drug smugglers and what were really called pirates. At one point we seized a boat
called the Sea Trader that had $5
million of uncut hashish on board.
We brought them to shore and arrested them. I think that was in the
Bahamas.
Upon his return from the Coast
Guard Ruscillo began working
at ConEd, where he stayed for 34

years. He spent 20 years working
in the field and the following 14 in
an office position. Moving to the
office was a great thing for me, it
taught me how to use computers
and so much of what I do now, he
said. He is now retired.
Ruscillo and his wife Linda
moved to Rockaway 21 years ago
(they have been married for almost
30 years) after visiting family in the
area many times. If it wasnt for our
German Shepard Sam we may never have moved here, he said. A guy
named Benny saw him and said he
was beautiful. We told him that we
were searching for an apartment
and he helped us out. They moved
to the beach block on Beach 124th
Street and now live nearby on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. It was the
beach and the water. We liked the
community and love the sun and
sand. Thats what brought us here.
Community service became a
passion for Ruscillo in short order.
My first meeting was with the 100th
Precinct Community Council, he
said. I fell in love with the police
officers and the people involved.
In 2003 he was elected as recording
secretary and four years after that
was elected president of the council. When you see an extra-large
crowd you know a lot of questions
are going to be asked, he stated. Of
late Ruscillo has found that most
residents are concerned about an
increase in shootings, parking violations (which Ruscillo said is main-

During Ruscillos time as president he has presided over eight
National Night Out Against Crime

during his tenure Ruscillo helped
to incorporate Transit District 23
into the monthly council meetings,
made an effort to increase cooperation with the 101st Precinct in Far
Rockaway by holding joint council
meetings, held a number of fundraisers including the ever-popular
chili cook-off, and raised awareness
for the Neighborhood Coordinating
Officer (NCO) program. For the
NYPD to give out phone numbers
and emails is a great start, he said.
The way things are now the NCO
program is welcome. Ive received
calls and emails saying how fast the
officers come, even the sergeant.

After more than a decade as part
of the council, Ruscillo has decided
to step down to dedicate more time
to his family and his other community endeavors. When youre
in charge of something you miss
everything, setting events, running
board meetings. But there comes a
time when you know youre ready
to leave. Twelve years is a long time.
Danny has [his] finger on the
pulse of the community and has always been ready to assist the community with any issues, Captain
Craig Adelman of the 100th Precinct
said. I would consider Danny to be
a pillar of the Rockaway community and a friend to all who know him.
He is a role model for those who
want to help their community and
for those who want to help build the
community policing relationship.
Ruscillo said he will continue to
volunteer with the council when he
has time and is keeping his position
on the Community Board as cochair of the Transportation Committee. Ive always wanted to help
people, he said. Its why I wanted
to join the Coast Guard. And its
stayed with me. Im still going to be
very involved in this community.

Become a Lifeguard! Beach Ramp Debacle

test. Locally, the test will be
given at Far Rockaway High
School (8-21 Bay 25th Street)
at 8 p.m. on Monday, December 14, Monday, December 21
and Tuesday, January 5. For
the qualifying test, you must be
able to swim at least 50 yards in
35 seconds with proper form,
have a minimum of 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 vision in the other without corrective lenses and you must
be 16 years or older when the
position begins. If you qualify, you will undergo 40 hours
of training, CPR and First Aid
courses and must pass a written, swimming and skills test
to become certified. After completing the course, passing the
test and undergoing a background check, lifeguards will
be paid for training and will
begin work.

Its the old switcheroo. Members of the Rockaway Civic Association were alarmed after
coming across a missed communication regarding changes to beach access in Phase 3
(Beach 106th to Beach 126th).
The issue was brought up at
Tuesdays Community Board
meeting. Changes to the original approved plan recently
came to light, showing that
the final construction plan for
the beach access points is not
what was approved in September 2014. The new plans
showed that Parks changed
some of the desired beach
access ramps to staircases instead. Parks had sent a letter
the Community Board regarding these changes in February 2015, but this was never
passed on to the rest of the
community board and civic associations. The changes
show that 12 of the approved
beachside ramps throughout
the entire boardwalk project,

While creating the final design, Parks determined that
the requested beachside
ramps could not be implemented into the design as they
would not be ADA compliant,
would not meet the dune elevation and would only partially be covered in sand at certain parts of the boardwalk, so
Parks switched the ramps to
staircases instead. Out of the
10 ramps that were requested,
four of them will be staircases instead and Parks wishes
to move along with this plan
so that the boardwalk will be
complete by Memorial Day
2016. A motion was made to
table the issue until Parks can
further review the original
plan for ramps. In another
issue, a motion was made to
request that Parks adds staircases along with ramps on
the landside, so that there are
more ways to exit or enter the
boardwalk.

The Parks Department is
starting the process of hiring
new lifeguards to guard one
of its eight beaches or 55 outdoor pools for the summer.
Lifeguarding gives people the
opportunity to work in a rewarding and challenging environment and teaches skills like
a strong work ethic, teamwork,
leadership and communication, as lifeguards aim to keep
swimmers safe each season.
The beaches are open from

through Labor Day and pools
are open from late June through
Labor Day. Lifeguards work 48
hours a week and starting pay
is $13.57 an hour, meaning you

5 Projects You Can Do With

1- Birthday candle menorah

You will need nine birthday candles with holders, air-drying clay
and acrylic paints. Make a clay block
about six inches long and one inch
high and one inch deep. Make a
small square about 3/4 of an inch.
Place your square in the center of
the long piece, and place your candle holders in with four on each side
and one in the center. Allow the clay
to harden overnight, and then paint
with acrylic paints. Put the candles in
the holders, and you have your birthday candle menorah.
2- Candy cane heart
You will need two candy canes,
some glue and ribbon. Lay the candy canes together to form a heart
shape putting the two bottoms together and the two tops. Glue the
ends together and allow to dry.
Make a bow out of ribbon and glue
on to where the two tops meet. You
can add a piece of string tied in a
loop and glued to the top to make

your candy cane heart ready to
hang on the tree.
3- Shell candles
You will need shells you collected
from the beach and votive candles.
Make sure you thoroughly clean
the shell. Remove the wick from
the votive candles and place the
wick in the center of the shell. Fill a
saucepan about halfway with water
and place a glass-measuring cup
in the saucepan. Cut the wax from
the votive candles into small shavings and place in the measuring
cup. Heat until the wax melts, then
spoon in the wax into the shells till
they are almost full. Be sure the
wick is standing upright and do not
cover the top of the wick.
4- Christmas tree made out of shells
Get a cone-shaped piece of Styrofoam and small shells from any craft
store. Paint the Styrofoam green and
allow to dry. Paint small shells in decorative holiday colors and glue to the
Styrofoam tree base.
5- Shell ornaments
Using a large shell that can be found
on the beach (make sure the shell is
thoroughly cleaned), drill a small hole
in the top of the shell, put a piece of
ribbon through it and tie it for hanging.

Paint the shell and allow to dry.

Beach Golf Club (219 Beach 100th
Street). The RBGC will be a virtual
golf lounge that will serve food and
alcohol, but as they continue to deal
with the buildings department, the
official opening is not yet known.
Taste of Rockaway Beach was
originally hosted by the Hospitality
and Entertainment Association for
Restaurants and Taverns (HEART),
but the group merged with the
Queens Chamber of Commerces
Rockaway Beach Merchant Association to form one large business
group called the Rockaway Union.
The members of HEART, which
was comprised of restaurants and
bars, agreed to merge into one
group that would be open to all
businesses and would cover a larger area from Beach 59th Street to
Beach 114th Street. The Rockaway
Union held its first event in September called Celebrate Rockaway! The
event featured exhibition fights by
CROM while local restaurants provided food and local vendors sold
goodies. Kaskel says the Rockaway
Union is in the process of apply-

The Queens Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring

fun. Two Rockaway Beach Boulevard boutiques, Off Season and
Zingara Vintage, will be offering

special discounts during the Taste
of Rockaway event, so feel free to
take a break from the food frenzy to
engage in some retail therapy.
Two other big events will be taking
place along the tour route. St. Camillus Catholic Academy on Beach 99th
Street will be holding its holiday boutique from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, so
stop by to pick up some holiday gifts.
Starting at 3:30 p.m. in front of Peninsula Library on Beach 94th Street, the

will hold its holiday tree lighting ceremony. There will be hot chocolate,
smores, caroling, performances by
Mrs. Elaines School of Dance and
more.
The Taste of Rockaway event is
one that continues to get bigger
and bigger. Kaskel says about 1,000
people attended this years spring
tour. Fewer are expected for this upcoming event, but Kaskel believes
as many as 2,000 may attend the
next spring one. The restaurants
that participate dont make money from the food they provide during the event, but it serves as good
exposure. For the merchants, the
winter is even better because its the
time of year that we want people to
remember that were still here. Its
kind of like one little jolt before the
deep cold sets in, to remind people that if they like our food, were
open all winter long, Kaskel said.

night of Hanukkah as the Menorahs first candle was lit. The

Last weekend the Beach 116th

Partnership hosted two holiday
events on Beach 116th Street
The Annual Christmas Tree
Lighting and the Lighting of
the Menorah. The Partnership
would like to thank all who were
a part of these celebrations.
The Christmas Tree Lighting
opening was led by Dr. Nancy
Gahles, Deacon Armand Daccordo and Councilman Eric
Ulrich. Seasonal songs were
performed by local groups including the St. Francis Catholic
Academy Choir, The St. Camillus Catholic Academy Choir,
and the PS/MS 114 School
Glee Club. This group, led by
Mrs. Robin Levy, performed a
moving tribute, Golden Slumbers by The Beatles, during a
candle light vigil for a popular
neighbor, friend and merchant
at Browns Hardware, Noni Signoretti, who recently passed
away.

Little North Pole a Seasonal Success

The Little North Pole lighting
on December 6 was a big hit.
With an unseasonably warm
December Sunday, about
3,000 people came out to the
grand event which featured
free food, plenty of entertainment from school and dance
groups and big performers
and Santa Claus who arrived
with toys for all of the kids in
attendance. Joe Mure holds
the event each year to raise
money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
In addition to donation boxes,
there was a 50/50 and raffles

for Radio City Christmas Spectacular and a weeks vacation.
On Monday, December 7,
Mure held smaller events for
children with disabilities and
the St. Camillus Special Olympics. The home at 144-03 Neponsit Avenue will be lit into
the New Year. Donation boxes
will be set up outside or a donation can be made at www2.

its transition to a diverse, low-tomiddle income residential and
commercial area.
Matt Whalen, who writes the
Fishing Report for the Rockaway Times, frequently visited
Far Rockaway as a child because
his parents, Dr. Thomas Whalen, Jr. and Marcella Whalen,
worked at the former St. Josephs
Hospital, now St. Johns Episcopal (the only hospital in Rockaway). It was a big focal point
for the whole community, west
and east, he recalled. They
used to have giant carnivals in
the parking lot, which I think
were fundraisers for the hospital. Everybody would show up.
Whalen remembered driving by
old Rockaway car dealerships,
Strands Theater, candy shops,
[and] lots of banks in his dads
yellow Cadillac. We would drive
down Central Ave. Theyd put the
top down and every block somebody would wave and say Hi, Dr.
Whalen! It was the place to be.
Today the area is mostly African-American but contains
a large Jewish population (and
consequently many yeshivas and
temples) and many other nationalities. Several schools serve Far
Rockaway including PS 104, PS
215, and MS 53 (Brian Piccolo)
and the Church of God Academy.
Community Board 14s headquarters are located in the heart of the
neighborhood on Mott Avenue.
In addition to being the home of
the subway/LIRR station, Mott
Avenue houses several bus lines,
restaurants, businesses large and
small, numerous churches, and
the 101st Precinct. Further down
on Beach 9th Street is a popular
playground and the beginning
of a concrete boardwalk which
stretches for several blocks. St.
Johns Hospital is the largest employer and is in the midst of a physical and public relations overhaul
under a new CEO, Gerard Walsh.
Many on the peninsula seem encouraged by the steps taken by the
new administration.
Tino Venezia opened his eponymous Unisex Hair Styling business in 1980. My father was here
in 1954 and I came in 1974, the
Italian immigrant said. He owned
a similar business in his home
country. I guess its good owning

a business here because Im still
making money, he deadpanned.
We dont do as good as before
though, too many beauty parlors now. He said that he didnt
think the area has changed all that
much over the three-plus decades
hes been there, though he did
say Years ago it was tougher in
terms of crime.
According to the NYPD Compstat report murder, rape, and robbery numbers have risen in 2015
while other reported crimes have
decreased. Even with the uptick,
Far Rockaway is a safer place than
it was in the early 1990s.
On Beach 19th Street the Millennium Thrift & Variety Store
sells clothes, cookware, and copious collectables. It was very hard
initially because you have to be
known, owner Leslie Beekharry
said. The shop opened five years
ago. I get a lot of repeat customers
and a lot of referrals. He said Far
Rockaway is gradually improving.
Its changing for the better, slowly. Crime has gone down. In fact,
rent prices have gotten too high for
Beekharry and he will be moving
the store out east on Long Island
in a few weeks.
Working behind the counter
was Amanda Feroz, whos originally from California. I loved it
down here during the summer. In
the mornings Id go for a run, go to
the beach. They have really cute,
off-the-wall food places. Its really
quiet and peaceful here. I like that
its a beach town, everybody is out
and about when the weather is
nice, she said. Feroz made note of
some things Far Rockaway could
improve upon as well. Theres not
a lot of universal entertainment
like movie theaters. And its so far
from Manhattan that we need better transportation, most people
dont drive to the city.
Sitting on a bench overlooking
the sand and ocean on Beach 17th
Street was Fallone Tarte. I like the
boardwalk. The sunsets are amazing and its a nice place to walk
around. Tarte, 15, has lived on
Beach 22nd Street for nine years.
It used to be a lot more filthy,
honestly. Seems a lot cleaner now.
And the people are nicer.

BUNGALOW BAR
HANGS STOCKINGS
FOR A WOUNDED VET
Pan-Seared Lemon Sole
By Sharon Feldman
Ingredients:
cup all-purpose flour
4 sole fillets
teaspoon kosher salt
4 tablespoons unsalted
butter
1 lemon, ends trimmed,
sliced into 12 thin circles
2 tablespoons capers, rinsed
and drained
Handful of cherry tomatoes,
sliced
Directions:
Place flour on a plate. Season
the sole with salt and dredge
in flour, shaking off excess. Set
aside.
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in

a skillet over medium heat.
Add the lemon and cook until
lightly browned, about 2 minutes.
Push the lemon to the side
and add the sole (in batches if
needed). Cook until the sole is
the same color throughout and
flakes easily, about 2 minutes
per side.
Add the capers, tomatoes
and remaining butter. Remove
skillet from heat and tilt to incorporate butter until it melts.
Transfer the sole and lemon
to plates and spool the capers,
tomatoes and butter over the
top.

five years ago when we wanted to decorate Park Avenue
Tavern I thought it would be
a great thing to decorate with
some stockings and throw
some names up on there, Eugene Brennan, a partner with
the Tubridy family, said. Itd
be a very easy and cool and
amazing way to raise money
for a wounded warrior.
This years veteran is Raul
Harplani, known as Harp
to his friends. He is a single
29-year-old who is going to

grad school and graduated
West Point in 2008. Raul lost
his leg in 2010 from a mine
when he was with 4th Infantry Division. Customers can
stop by Bungalow Bar or any
of its other partner establishments and purchase a stocking in his honor, which will
then be hung up in the restaurant. All of the money will
then be donated to Harplani
and his family. Last year Bungalow Bar raised over $5,000
and hope to match and exceed that total this year.
Its been fantastic to get
customers involved. Nobody
really minds donating to such
a great cause when theyve
done so much for us, Brennan said. [Harplani] is a local
guy and this would make his
Christmas a little better.
