Montage
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Visual Media
Date: 10/25/2015
Programs Used: Photoshop
Description: This is a spiritual/inspirational montage made from masking two
images together and adding typography.

Objectives:

- Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
-Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
-Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
-Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
-Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
-Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
-Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
-Select good quality images

Process: I began in Photoshop by cropping the background image to 8 1/2 x

11. I created a layer to do some color and level adjustments. I then placed the clock
image onto the background picture and added a mask. With a black brush at 80%
opacity I brushed away the hard edges. I lowered the opacity to about 230 and faded
the clock so that it was only visible on the left side. I blended it so that the edges
cannot be seen in any part of the picture. I ended by inserting my quote and using
different sizes and thickness to add variety and contrast to the message.

InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop

Description: A two-sided offset style brochure.

Objectives:
-Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

-Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.

- Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including
the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the
text follows the cutout shape of the image.
-Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers,
and subheaders.
-Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process: I set up my InDesign document with ruler guides for me to follow so that

at the end when I went to fold it, the colors were on the appropriate sides and everything lined up. I then chose the headings/topics I wanted to focus on and then chose
images for that. For every image except for the bubblegum background one on the
back, I put them into Photoshop and used the quick selection tool to cut out the only
part of the image that I wanted. I then used the refine mask to smooth and feather the
object in the image to make it look as real as possible. I inserted that into InDesign by
placing them in, and adjusted the sizes. I wrote out my text and then did text wrap so
that I could creatively position my images and have the text go around it, and then put
a white box around each heading. I also created my bubble gum machine logo with
the pen tool and inserted that in my brochure.

BUBBLEGUM

Imaging
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communication 130 Section 3
Date: 10/18/2015
Programs Used: Photoshop
Description:

I used a new and original photo that I took to show photography

and editing skills in Photoshop. I used this image to create a full-bleed, 8 1/2 x 11
photodesign.

Objectives:

-Learn basic photography skills.

-Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the
colors into the layout.
-Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
-Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for
NDE (non-destructive editing.)
-Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
-Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
-Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

Process: My first step in the process was to choose the color scheme I wanted. I

chose a complementary color scheme that consists of red and green because I wanted
a picture the fall colors outside. I then went out and took the photo with my Canon
6D camera and brought it into Photoshop to edit. I started by getting the exact colors
I needed from the color wheel and then adjusting them ever so slightly to match the
colors in my photo exactly. I found a quote that goes along with the image and so
I put that into the design after creating a box to put the words onto. I used the leaf
theme and created some repetition for my color swatches by putting them into the
shape of a leaf. I made sure to keep all my words to the left and to give the feet in the
image some lead room above it.

Web Page
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 3
Date: 11/22/2015
Programs Used: TextWrangler and Photoshop
Description: A webpage designed to showcase a logo that I created.
Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300
500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to
a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to
target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype
(provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li
tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to
format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The
h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the
background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5
inch margins for printing.

Process: I began by creating a webpage using TextWrangler and I was amazed

at what I could do with just this simple program. I always knew if I was on the right
track because I used and HTML validator to check and see if there were any errors.
I started with an HTML document where I inserted my image and then attached a
pre-made CSS document to it so that I could change fonts, colors, and much more.
I went into Photoshop and used the eyedropper tool to find the exact colors I needed
for my webpage so that all the colors would go together. I changed all my fonts to be
sans-serif and made the headings of the page dark green. I used padding around the
title of my webpage and around the logo so that nothing would be too close to each
other. I also put a div on top of the background color to give some contrast between
the logo and my explanations.

Event Ad
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communication 130 Section 3
Date: 10/10/2015
Programs Used: Microsoft Word
Description:

This is a color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser for

communities in Uganda using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Objectives:

-Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

-Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
-Create a full-bleed design.
-Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
-Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.

Process:

I scanned the image and cropped out the sides in Microsoft Word. I
created a mirrored version of the image to create repetition. I used a right alignment
for my body text and the date of the event, and I included a blue-colored box down
the middle of the two images to separate them and stuck my logo in it. I used a split
complementary color scheme with blue, brick, and gold and used the colors in most
of my elements. The color scheme worked out nicely because it matches perfectly
with the hat that the guy is wearing in the image.

Logos
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communication 130 Section 3
Date: 10/31/15
Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator
Description:

Logos for a business.

Objectives:

-Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal

image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs.
-Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
-Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image
or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before
submitting.)
-Refine one logo with variations for color

Process: I started out by sketching out three different logos for Ronnie Harris

Films and then created them in Adobe Illustrator. I then chose the logo that had the
most votes from a number of people. I typed out the text I needed, chose specific
fonts to match the feel of the logo, and contrasted the thickness of different words. I
wanted RHF to stand out above anything else and so I made those letters larger and
thicker. I connected the letters H and F with an arrow and lined it up with the indent
in the letter R. After that I copied the logo twice and created one in greyscale and the
other one with white text and a colored background.

Business Card
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communication 130 Section 3
Date: 11/10/2015
Programs Used: Illustrator and InDesign
Description: A letterhead with a matching business card using a personally
created logo for my business.

Objectives:

-Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

-Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
-Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements.
Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card
should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.
-Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
-Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white
space.
-Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

Process: I began the process in Adobe Illustrator and created a new logo for the

film business. I used contrasting thickness in the letters to create variety but stuck
with the same font to create repetition. I made sure to make my logo the largest so
that it would stand out above everything else, followed by my name and then my information above. I then did the back of the business card and put marks on the sides
of the card to exemplify the focus on a camera. I saved this document and placed it
into an InDesign document.

Process: After creating a business card, I created a letter head that was similar to

my business card so that it would create a familiar feel. I drew lines across the page so
that it would create some more repetition to match the H in my logo. I then copied
the logo and brought it down to the bottom of the page to create a watermark and
turned the opacity down to 4%.
