Time Allowed: 2 hours

INSTRUCTIONS
1.

This paper contains FOUR (4) questions and comprises SIX (6) pages which include
TWO (2) pages of Appendices.

2.

Answer ALL questions.

3.
Question 1 carries 40 marks and the other questions carry 20 marks each.
___________________________________________________________________________
1(a)

List the major components in the Inert Gas Systems and describe the functions of each
of these components. Sketch the layout of the Inert Gas System and label the major
components.
(14 marks)

(b)

Explain the difference between an inherent linear flow characteristics valve and an
inherent equal percentage flow characteristics valve and identify the applications
where they can be used.
(5 marks)

(c)

Figure 1 shows a schematic of a 3-position, 4-way, directional control valve connected

to a double-acting cylinder. Describe the operation of the flow control valve for the
three possible envelope positions.
In the absence of an external load at the cylinder, explain why you would expect the
outward stroke to be slower than the return stroke. Comment on the relative load
capacity of the cylinder for the outward and return motions.

(d)

Expand on the circuit of Figure 1 to include a second double-acting cylinder. It is

required that the motion of the second cylinder be synchronised to that of the first
cylinder in the presence of non-uniform external loading.
If the first cylinder has a piston diameter of 4.0 cm and a rod diameter of 1.0 cm,
specify the critical dimensions of the second cylinder that will ensure that both
cylinders move at the same speed.
(7 marks)

(e)

For a marine liquid cargo hold area, suggest and explain a suitable type of liquid level
sensor for remote indication at the bridge.
(4 marks)

(f)

What is meant by reset wind-up and under what conditions can this happen?
(4 marks)

2(a)

A 2 hp, 230V, 60 Hz, three phase, -connected induction motor operates at a full load
speed of 1710 rpm. If the supply voltage fluctuates at 10%, determine the torque
range of the motor at its rated speed.
(8 marks)

(b)

A 480 V, 60 Hz, 6 pole, three phase squirrel-cage induction motor has the
approximate per-phase equivalent circuit as shown in Figure 2.

The motor drives a ventilating fan whose torque-speed characteristics with the damper
completely open, is given by
T = 0.03 2 Nm
(i)

Determine the motors current and torque when the dampers are completely
open. The motor operates at a slip of 2.6% such that it produces a torque that
is equal to the load requirements.

(ii)

Determine the motors current and torque when the dampers are partially
closed and the motor operates at 1140 rpm.

(iii)

Sketch the torque-speed characteristics curve of the induction motor and the
ventilating fan with the dampers completely opened and also with the dampers
in a partially closed condition. Indicate the operating points and its values in
the torque-speed characteristics curve.

3(a)

Figure 3 shows a regenerative hydraulic circuit. Highlight the objectives of the circuit
and describe the operations of the circuit for the three envelope positions of the
directional flow control valve. Comment on the load capacity of the outward and
return strokes.

(7 marks)
(b)

Develop the relationship between the piston area and rod area of the cylinder to that of
its extension and retraction speeds. Identify the conditions that will result in equal
forward and return speeds.
(8 marks)

(c)

In the presence of leakage in the hydraulic line at the piston end, the cylinder would
retract due to an external force. It was suggested that a pilot operated check valve be
used to solve this problem. Comment on the usefulness of this suggestion.

Figure 4 shows a simplified piping and instrumentation diagram of an engine jacket

cooling system. A pump circulates the fresh water coolant through a heat exchanger and
back to the engine jacket to prevent engine overheating. A switch is installed on the
jacket to detect high pressure.

(a)

Complete the Piping & Instrument (P & I) Diagram of Figure 4 showing the
appropriate instruments and controller for the jacket cooling system.
(5 marks)

(b)

Give a brief description of the types of instruments you will select for all the
instrumentation items on your P & I Diagram
(5 marks)

(c)

Explain the operation of the temperature control for the cooling system starting from
the sensor, the controller to the 3-way control valve
(4 marks)

(d)

If the valve is Air-to-Open to divert flow to the cooler, explain the concept of direct
acting control action in the temperature control loop. What will happen if the engineer
implements reverse acting control action?
