J.W. Keely and the Vril

The name vril may be a fiction; the Force itself is
a fact doubted as little in India as the existence
itself of their Rishis, since it is mentioned in all
the secret works. SD3 556.

It is obvious to most thinkers that science, having begun the study

radioactivity, is on the verge of discovering what is the nature of the pow
within the atom itself; it is very probable that before long we shall harness
energy of atomic matter for every conceivable purpose, for heating, for lighti
and for what I might call the motivation of everything that is carried on in
world.

That force, as some of us know, was nearly discovered in the United States f
years ago by a man called Keely, but he was not allowed to give it out to
world because of the danger thereby involved. Men are as yet far too selfish
be trusted with the distribution of atomic energy.

That discovery will probably parallel the development of group consciousne

Only when man becomes radioactive and can work and think in group terms, w
it be safe or wise for him to utilize the power latent in the atom. Everything
nature is beautifully coordinated, and nothing can be discovered or utili
before the right time. Only as man becomes unselfish will this tremendous pow
be permitted to pass into his hands. Nevertheless, we can, I believe, look
science to make tremendous strides in the comprehension of atomic energy.

Each physical apparatus has a perfect analogy in the Subtle World. Moreover
can easily be perceived how simple it is to augment the power of an apparatus
invoking Agni. Thus it is possible to reperform a great number of experime
that turned out unsuccessfully.

The experiments of Keely and even the apparatus of Edison remained imperf
for the Subtle World, because the energy of Agni was not applied; in one ca
because of a surrounding suspiciousness, in the other because of perso
unbelief. It has been said that even a candle is not lit without faith. FW1 251.

Keely, as H. P. B. hinted, (S. D., I, 172, 607-611) had gone far along this pa
and knew even more than he gave out, and others have approached, or
approaching, the same objective. The next step ahead for science lies in t
direction, and should concern the potential force of the atom itself, and
harnessing for the use of man. This will let loose upon earth a stupendo
amount of energy.

Nevertheless, it is only when the third factor is comprehended, and scien

admits the agency of mental fire as embodied in certain groups of devas, that
force of energy that is triple, and yet one in the three worlds, will beco
available for the helping of man. This lies as yet far ahead, and will only beco
possible towards the end of this round; and these potent forces will not be fu
utilized, nor fully known till the middle of the next round. At that time, mu
energy will become available through the removal of all that obstructs. TCF 49

The fourth plane, the buddhic, by the aid of manas, will gradually be realiz

The answer to a question which has frequently arisen in the minds of studen
when meeting with statements such as this, may be outlined here.

"We can understand," they say, "the necessity for concealing from the herd su
secrets as the Vril, or the rock-destroying force, discovered by J. W. Keely,
Philadelphia. SD1 intro 36.

The vril of the "Coming Race" was the common property of races now extinc
so the vril or Akas -- as we call it -- is looked upon as an impossibility, a my

But then, may there not be people who have found more perfect and rapid mea
of transmission, from being somewhat better acquainted with the occult pow
of air (akas) and having plus a more cultivated judgment of sounds? KH Let

The chief agency by which Nature's wheel is moved in a phenomenal direction

sound. Sound is the first aspect of the manifested pentagon since it is a prope
of ether called Akas and as I already said Vedic recitation is the highest Yagn
containing in itself all minor Yagnams and tending to preserve the manifes
pentagon in the proper order. In the opinion of our old philosophers sound
speech is next to thought the highest karmic agent used by man.

Of the various karmic agencies wielded by man in the way of molding hims
and surroundings, sound or speech is the most important, for, to speak is to wo
in ether which of course rules the lower quaternary of elements, air, fire, wa
and earth. Human sound or language contains therefore all the eleme
required to move the different classes of Devas and those elements are of cou
the vowels and the consonants. The details of the philosophy of sound in
relation to the devas who preside over the subtle world, belong to the domain
true Mantra Sastra which of course is in the hands of the knowers." - So

The antediluvian children -- who perhaps played with it, using it as the boys
Bulwer-Lytton's Coming Race, use the tremendous "vril" -- called it the "Wa
of Phtha"; their descendants named it the Anima Mundi, the soul of the univer
and still later the mediaeval hermetists termed it "sidereal light," or the "Milk
the Celestial Virgin," the "Magnes," and many other names. But our mod
learned men will neither accept nor recognize it under such appellations; fo
pertains to magic, and magic is, in their conception, a disgraceful superstiti

And in this appellation of "living fire" we may also discover the meaning of
puzzling sentence in the Zend-Avesta saying that there is "a fire that gi
knowledge of the future. Science and amiable speech," i.e., develops
extraordinary eloquence in the sybil, the sensitive, and even some orators. S

Vir
Sir E. Bulwer-Lytton, in his Coming Race, describes it as the VRIL, used by
subterranean populations, and allowed his readers to take it for a fiction. "Th
people," he says, "consider that in the vril they had arrived at the unity
natural energic agencies"; and proceeds to show that Faraday intimated th
"under the more cautious term of correlation," thus:

"I have long held an opinion, almost amounting to a conviction, in common

believe, with many other lovers of natural knowledge, that the various for
under which the forces of matter are made manifest, HAVE ONE COMMO
ORIGIN; or, in other words, are so directly related and naturally dependent, t
they are convertible, as it were, into one another, and possess equivalents

Its future constructive use lies in the hands of science and should be control
by the men of goodwill to be found in all nations. This energy must

safeguarded from monied interests; it must be turned definitely into the usages
peace and employed to implement a new and happier world. PH 67.

Until mankind, however, has moved forward in its understanding of right hum
relations, an international group of men of goodwill -trusted and chosen by
people - should safeguard these potencies. PH 82.

Atomic energy belongs to humanity as a whole. The responsibility for its cont
must lie in the hands of the men of goodwill. They must control its destiny a
make it available along constructive lines for the use of men everywhere. No o
nation should own the formula or secret for the release of energy. Ibid.

Who, in the nineteenth century, believes in the art, described in such treatises
those of Targes, of evoking and directing thunderbolts?

old fragment that was translated to him, that the late Lord Bulwer Lytton got
idea of Vril. It is a lucky thing, indeed, that, in the face of the virtues a
philanthropy that grace our age of iniquitous wars, of anarchists a
dynamiters, the secrets contained in the books discovered in Numas tomb sho

But the science of Circe and Medea is not lost. One can discover it in
apparent gibberish of the Tantrika Sutras, the Kuku-ma of the Bhutani and
Sikhim Dugpas and Red-caps of Tibet, and even in the sorcery of the Nilg
Mula Kurumbas. Very luckily few outside the high practioners of the Left P
and of the Adepts of the Right - in whose hands the weird secrets of the r
meaning are safe - understand the black evocations. Otherwise the Western
much as the Eastern Dugpas might make short work of their enemies. The na

It is the vril of Bulwer Lytton's "Coming Race," and of the coming races of o
mankind. The name vril may be a fiction; the Force itself is a fact doubted

And is it this Satanic Force that our generations were to be allowed to add
their stock of Anarchist's baby-toys, known as melenite, dynamite clock-wor
explosive oranges, "flower baskets," and such other innocent names? Is it t
destructive agency, which, once in the hands of some modern Attila, e.g.
blood-thirsty anarchist, would reduce Europe in a few days to its primit
chaotic state with no man left alive to tell the tale -- is this force to become
common property of all men alike?

What Mr. Keely has already done is grand and wonderful in the extreme; there
enough work before him in the demonstration of his new system to "humble
pride of those scientists who are materialistic, by revealing those myster
which lie behind the world of matter," without revealing it nolens volens to
For surely Psychists and Spiritualists -- of whom there are a good number in
European armies -- would be the first to experience personally the fruits of su
mysteries revealed. Thousands of them would find themselves (and perhaps w
the populations of whole countries to keep them company) in blue Ether v

known. The discovery in its completeness is by several thousand -- or shall
say hundred thousand? -- years too premature. It will be at its appointed pla
and time only when the great roaring flood of starvation, misery, and underp
labour ebbs back again -- as it will when happily at last the just demands of
many are attended to; when the proletariat exists but in name, and the pitiful
for bread, that rings throughout the world unheeded, has died away. This may
hastened by the spread of learning, and by new openings for work a
emigration, with better prospects than exist now, and on some new continent t
may appear. Then only will "Keely's Motor and Force," as origina
contemplated by himself and friends, be in demand, because it will be m
needed by the poor than by the wealthy.

Meanwhile the force discovered by him will work through wires, and this, if
succeeds, will be quite sufficient in the present generation to make of him
greatest discoverer of this age.

What Mr. Keely says of Sound and Colour is also correct from the Occult sta
point. Hear him talk as though he were the nursling of the "Gods-revealers," a
had gazed all his life into the depths of Father-Mother AEther.

In comparing the tenuity of the atmosphere with that of the etheric flo
obtained by him from his invention for breaking up the molecules of air
vibration, Keely says that:-. . . "It is as platina to hydrogen gas. Molecular separation of air brings us to

first sub-division only; inter-molecular, to the second; atomic, to the third; int
atomic, to the fourth; etheric, to the fifth; and inter-etheric, to the sixth s
division, or positive association with luminiferous ether. In my introduct

throwing out absolute corpuscles of matter, inter-atomic particles, with veloc
of 1,120 feet per second; in vacuo 20,000. The substance which is th
disseminated is a part and parcel of the mass agitated, and, if kept under t
agitation continuously, would, in the course of a certain cycle of time, beco
thoroughly absorbed by the atmosphere; or, more truly, would pass through
atmosphere to an elevated point of tenuity corresponding to the condition of su
division that governs its liberation from its parent body." . . .

"The sounds from vibratory forks, set so as to produce etheric chords, wh
disseminating their tones (compound), permeate most thoroughly all substan
that come under the range of their atomic bombardment. The clapping of a b
in vacuo liberates these atoms with the same velocity and volume as one in
open air; and were the agitation of the bell kept up continuously for a f
millions of centuries it would thoroughly return to its primitive element; and
the chamber were hermetically sealed, and strong enough, the vacuous volu
surrounding the bell would be brought to a pressure of many thousands
pounds to the square inch, by the tenuous substance evolved. In my estimati
sound truly defined is the disturbance of atomic equilibrium, rupturing act
atomic corpuscles; and the substance thus liberated must certainly be a cert
order of etheric flow. Under these conditions, is it unreasonable to suppose th
if this flow were kept up, and the body thus robbed of its element, it would in ti
disappear entirely? All bodies are formed primitively from this highly tenuo
ether, animal, vegetable, and mineral, and they are only returned to their h
gaseous condition when brought under a state of differential equilibrium.". . .

"As regards odour, we can only get some definite idea of its extreme a
wondrous tenuity by taking into consideration that a large area of atmosph
can be impregnated for a long series of years from a single grain of mu
which, if weighed after that long interval, will be found to be not apprecia
diminished. The great paradox attending the flow of odorous particles is t
they can be held under confinement in a glass vessel! Here is a substance

much higher tenuity than the glass that holds it, and yet it cannot escape. It is
a sieve with its meshes large enough to pass marbles, and yet holding fine sa
which cannot pass through; in fact, a molecular vessel holding an atom
substance. This is a problem that would confound those who stop to recognize
But infinitely tenuous as odour is, it holds a very crude relation to the substan
of sub-division that governs a magnetic flow (a flow of sympathy, if you please
call it so).

This sub-division comes next to sound, but is above sound. The action of the fl
of a magnet coincides somewhat to the receiving and distributing portion of
human brain, giving off at all times a depreciating ratio of the amount receiv

depreciates the physical till dissolution takes place. The magnet on the sa

between mind and matter could be equated and so held, we would live on in o
physical state eternally, as there would be no physical depreciation. But t

development -- viz., the liberation of the pure ether from the crude molecul

It may be remarked that, save a few small divergencies, no Adept nor Alchem
could have explained the above any better, in the light of modern Scien
however much the latter may protest against the novel views. This is, in all
fundamental principles, if not details, Occultism pure and simple, yet with
modern natural philosophy as well.

This "New Force," or whatever Science may call it, the effects of which
undeniable -- admitted by more than one naturalist and physicist who has visi
Mr. Keely's laboratory and witnessed personally its tremendous effects -- wha
it? Is it a "mode of motion," also, "in Vacuo," since there is no matter to gener
it except Sound -- another "mode of motion," no doubt, a sensation caused l
colour by vibrations? Fully as we believe in these vibrations as the proximate
the immediate -- cause of such sensations, we as absolutely reject the one-sid
scientific theory that there is no factor to be considered as external to us, oth
than etheric or atmospheric vibrations.

There is a transcendental set of causes put in motion -- so to speak -- in

occurrence of these phenomena, which, not being in relation to our narr
range of cognition, can only be traced to their source and their nature, a
understood by the Spiritual faculties of the Adept. They are, as Asclepios put
to the King, "incorporeal corporealities" -- such as "appear in the mirror," a
"abstract forms" that we see, hear, and smell, in our dreams, and visions. W
have the "modes of motion," light, and ether to do with these? Yet we see, he
and smell, and touch them, ergo they are as much realities to us in our dream
as any other thing on this plane of Maya. SD3 566.

JC: Note that HPB speaks above of "Blue Ether" when describing the Vril for
or energy of Agni as corresponding to the release of atomic energy of
Buddhic plane.

Is the coloring of the fourth cosmic ether (the buddhic plane), blue, or is it vio
to correspond with our fourth physical ether? TCF 354.

There has never been a period in our planetary history in which opportunity h
loomed so large or when so much spiritual light and force could be contac
and utilized by humanity.

The first indication of this massed and available energy produced coordinat
of the New Group of World Servers upon the physical plane.

The second indication produced a pronounced cleavage between the forces

evil and the Forces of Light; this cleavage resulted in the world war (1914-194
and initiated the seething emotional and psychic turmoil in which human
today finds itself.

The third indication was the release of atomic energy and the discovery of how
transmute energy into matter and matter into energy. The spiritual energies ha
therefore, impersonally and with a "vivid directive of pure intent," penetra
from the highest point of spiritual purpose to the lowest aspect of matter,
atom; they have thus proved the truth of the statement that matter is spirit at
lowest point and spirit is matter at its highest, and that the apparent duality
but an essential unity. A concentration of spiritual forces in and through the N
Group of World Servers, the production of a world conflict with its disrupt
and at the same time its unifying result, and the release of certain impress
energies in matter itself for the benefit of all created things on Earth - these

potentialities which will enable its individual units to tread not only the one
two cosmic Paths hitherto open to them, but all of them, if given the ri

I would like at this time to touch upon the greatest spiritual event which h
taken place since the fourth kingdom of nature, the human kingdom, appeared

refer to the release of atomic energy, as related in the newspapers this we

August 6, 1945, in connection with the bombing of Japan. Some years ago I t
you that the new era would be ushered in by the scientists of the world and t
the inauguration of the kingdom of God on Earth would be heralded by means
successful scientific investigation. By this first step in the releasing of the ene
of the atom this has been accomplished, and my prophecy has been justif
during this momentous year of our Lord 1945. Let me make one or t
statements anent this discovery, leaving you to make your own application a
deductions. Little as to the true nature of this happening is as yet known, and s
less is understood. Certain ideas and suggested thoughts may be of real va
here and enable you to see this stupendous event in better perspective.

1. It was the imminence of this "release" of energy which was one of the ma
subjective factors in the precipitation of this last phase of the war. This wo
war started in 1914, but its last and most important phase began in 1939.
then it was a world war. After that date, and because the forces of evil to
advantage of the state of war and belligerency existing on the planet, the r
war began, involving the entire three worlds of human evolution and
consequent activity of the Hierarchy. Man's attention is normally focused on
externalities of living. Nevertheless, all great discoveries, such as those made
connection with astronomy or in relation to the laws of nature or involving su
a revelation as that of radioactivity or the epoch-making event announced t
week concerning the first steps taken in the harnessing of cosmic energy,
ever the result of inner pressure emanating from Forces and Lives found in h
Places.

Such inner pressures themselves function under the laws of the Spirit and not j
under what you call natural laws; they are the result of the impelling work
certain great Lives, working in connection with the third aspect of divinity, t
of active intelligence, and are concerned with the substance or matter aspect
manifestation. Such activities are motivated from Shamballa. This activity is
in motion by these Lives, working on Their high plane, and it gradually cause
reaction in the various departments of the Hierarchy, particularly those work
under third, fifth and seventh ray Masters. Eventually, disciples upon
physical levels of activity become aware of the inner ferment, and this happ
either consciously or unconsciously. They become "impressed," and the scient
work is then started and carried through into the stages of experimentation a
final success.

One point should here be remembered, and that is that this phase applies to b
the great White Lodge and the Black Lodge - the one dedicated to the benefic
task of purifying and aiding all lives in the three worlds of material evolut
and to the release of the soul in form, and the other to the retardation of
evolutionary process and to the continuous crystallizing of the material for
which hide and veil the anima mundi. Both groups have been profoun
interested and implicated in this matter of the release of energy from the at

and the liberation of its inner aspect, but their motives and objectives w

The imminence of this release - inevitable and under direction - produced

enormous tension in hierarchical circles because (to express the id
colloquially) a race was on between the Dark Forces and the Forces of Light
acquire possession of the techniques necessary to bring about this liberation
needed energy. Had the Dark Forces triumphed, and had the Axis Pow
obtained possession of the needed scientific formulas, it would have led to
major planetary disaster. The released energy would have been used first of
to bring about the complete destruction of all opposing the forces of evil, a
then it would have been prostituted to the preservation of an increasin
materialistic and non-idealistic civilization. Germany could not be trusted w
this power, for all her motives were compelling wrong.You might here fall ba
on the trite religious platitude that the innate good in humanity and mankin
inherent divinity would eventually have triumphed, because naught can fina
overcome the universal trend to good.

You are prone to forget that if the evil forces possess potencies which can dest
form in the three worlds on such a wide scale that the souls of advanc
aspirants and disciples, and those of initiates seeking incarnation, cannot co
into outer expression during a particular world crisis, then you have direfu
affected the time-schedule of the evolutionary process; you will have grea
delayed (perhaps for millennia of years) the manifestation of the kingdom
God. The time had come for that manifestation, and hence the powerful activ
of the dark forces. This attempt to hinder the planned progress constituted
definite menace and indicated a supreme danger and problem.

The evil forces were closer to success than any of you have ever dreamed. Th
were so close to success in 1942 that there were four months when the memb
of the spiritual Hierarchy had made every possible arrangement to withdr
from human contact for an indefinite and unforeseen period of time; the plans
a closer contact with the evolutionary process in the three worlds and the eff
to blend and fuse the two divine centers, the Hierarchy and Humanity, into o
working, collaborating whole seemed doomed to destruction. Their fusion wo
have meant the appearance of the Kingdom of God on earth; the obstacles to t
fusion, owing to the active tension of the dark forces, seemed at that ti
insuperable; we believed that man would go down to defeat, owing to
selfishness and his misuse of the principle of free will. We made all preparatio
to withdraw, and yet at the same time we struggled to get humanity to cho
rightly and to see the issues clearly.

The necessity to withdraw was averted. I may not say in what manner, beyo
telling you that the Lords of Liberation took certain unexpected steps. This Th
were led to do owing to the invocative powers of humanity, used consciously
all those upon the side of the will-to-good and unconsciously by all men

goodwill. Owing to these steps, the efforts of those fighting in the realm
science for the establishing of true knowledge and right human relations w
aided. The trend of the power to know and to discover (a definite form of ener
was deflected away from the demanding evocative minds of those seeking
destroy the world of men, leading to a form of mental paralysis. Those seeking
emphasize the right values and to save humanity were simultaneously stimula
to the point of success. In these very few words I have disposed of a stupendo
world event, and in this brief paragraph I have summed up the working out o
specialized
divine
activity.

Four factors lie behind the momentous happening of the release of this form
atomic energy, through the medium of what is erroneously and unscientifica
called the "splitting of the atom." There are other factors, but you may find
following four of real interest:

There was a clearly directed inflow of extra-planetary energy released by

Lords of Liberation, to Whom invocation had been successfully made; throu
the impact of this energy upon the atomic substance being dealt with by
investigating scientists, changes were brought about which enabled them
achieve success. The experiments being carried forward were therefore b
subjective and objective. A concerted effort was made by a number of discip
who were working in fifth and seventh ray ashrams, and this enabled them
impress lesser disciples in the scientific field and helped them to surmount
well-nigh insuperable difficulties with which they were confronted.

There was also a weakening of the tension which had hitherto successfully h
the forces of evil together, and a growing inability of the evil group at the head
the Axis Powers to surmount the incidental war fatigue. This brought about, f
of all, a steady deterioration of their minds, and then of their brains and nervo
systems. None of the men involved in the direction of the Axis effort in Europe
today normal psychologically; they are all suffering from some form of physi
deterioration, and this has been a real factor in their defeat, though one that m
be difficult for you to realize. It is not so in the case of the Japanese, wh
psychological makeup is totally different, as are their nervous systems, which
of fourth root-race quality. They will be and are being defeated by physical w
measures and by the destruction physically of their war potential and the de
of the form aspect. This destruction... and the consequent release of th
imprisoned souls, is a necessary happening; it is the justification of the use of
atomic bomb upon the Japanese population.

The first use of this released energy has been destructive, but I would remind y
that it has been the destruction of forms and not the destruction of spirit

Nevertheless, we can, I believe, look to science to make tremendous strides in

comprehension of atomic energy. Then paralleling the evolution of the hum
being again, we can look for man to dominate the air. There is a great vibrat
sphere, or plane, in the solar system, called in some occult books the intuitio
plane; it is called in the Eastern literature the Buddhic plane, and its symbo

intuition on to that plane now, so science is beginning to discover how
dominate the air, and as the intuition in man develops and grows, so will

An interesting analogy may here be noted between the fourth cosmic ether, a

All physical phenomena as we understand the term have an electrical origin, a

an initial vibration on the first subplane of the physical plane.

That Light, physical plane light, has a close connection with, and uses, a

That color in a peculiar sense is allied to the fourth ether.

We must note here that in the development of the senses, hearing preceded sig
as sound precedes color. An interesting analogy may here be noted between
fourth cosmic ether, and the fourth ether on the physical plane of the so

buddhic electrical force. It might here be asked why color primarily is spoken
as the buddhic manifestation of electricity. We are employing the word "col
here in its original and basic sense as "that which veils." Color veils
sevenfold differentiation of logoic manifestation and, from the angle of vision
man in the three worlds, can be seen only in its full significance on the budd

Again another correspondence between the fourth cosmic ether and the fou
physical ether lies in the fact that they are both primarily concerned with
work of the great builders, bearing in mind that they build the real body of
Logos in etheric matter; the dense physical vehicle is not so much the result
their work as it is the result of the meeting of the seven streams of force
electricity, which causes that apparent congestion in matter that we call
dense physical planes (the three lower subplanes). This apparent congestion
after all, but the exceeding electronic activity or energy of the mass of negat
atoms awaiting the stimulation that will result from the presence of a cert
number of positive atoms. This needs to be borne in mind. The work of evolut
is based on two methods and demonstrates as: Involution, wherein the negat
electrons of matter preponderate. The percentage of these feminine electrons
one of the secrets of initiation and is so vast during the involutionary stage t
the rarity of the positive atoms is very noticeable; they are so rare as only

Much concerning them may be deduced from the already apprehended fa

which relate to the four solar physical ethers.

For instance, the fourth ether (which is even now being what we might c
"discovered"), is at this stage characterized by certain things. I might enumer
a few of these facts with exceeding brevity, as follows:

It is the ether which the violet ray uses as a medium. The fourth ether is t
whereof the majority of the etheric bodies of men are made.

The fourth ether is largely the principal sphere of influence of the "devas of
shadows," or those violet devas which are closely concerned with the physi

evolution of man.

It is the etheric sphere within which, at a little later date, the human and the de
evolutions will touch. From this fourth etheric sphere the dense physical bod
are created.

It is the sphere of physical individualization. Only when the animal to

individualized was fully conscious on that subplane of the physical plane wa
possible to coordinate the corresponding spheres on the astral and mental pla
and by means of this triple coordination to effect the necessary steps wh
enabled the quaternary to succeed in its effort to approximate the Triad.

This fourth ether in this fourth round and on this fourth chain has to
completely mastered and controlled by the Human Hierarchy, the fourth creati

It is the sphere wherein the initiations of the threshold are undergone, and
fivefold initiations of the physical plane are entered upon.

Much more might be further added to this list, but I have sought only to point
those which can be easily realized as having a correspondence on the budd
plane, the fourth cosmic ether. It should be borne in mind that our physical pla
in its subplanes has its analogy likewise to the entire cosmic physical pla

The fourth ether is coming into recognition, and along with it will come
knowledge of the lives which it embodies. Hence the success of spiritualis
endeavor, for the larger number of the average discarnate entities at this sta
who are willing to make contact with the physical plane are clothed in matter
this ether. The devas of this ether will also come to be known before the end
this round, and alliance will be made between the fourth Creative Hierarchy
men, and the devas of the fourth ether.

The fourth plane, the buddhic, by the aid of manas, will gradually be realiz

steady influx of egos on to the buddhic plane in conscious activity, and thus
of the control of manas pure and simple, a very serious condition will have to
handled by the Hierarchy. TCF 408.

First, physical plane scientists will be able to speak with authority anent
fourth ether, even though they may not recognize it as the lowest of the fo
etheric grades of substance: its sphere of influence and its utilization will
comprehended, and "force" as a factor in matter, or the electrical manifestat
of energy within definite limits, will be as well understood as is hydrogen at t
time. Indications of this can already be seen in the discovery of radium, and
study of radioactive substances and of electronic demonstration. This knowled
will revolutionize the life of man; it will put into his hands that which occult
call "power of the fourth order" (on the physical plane). It will enable him
utilize electrical energy for the regulation of his everyday life in a way as
incomprehensible; it will produce new methods of illuminating, and of heat
the world at a small cost and with practically no initial outlay. The fact of
existence of the etheric body will be established, and the healing of the de
physical body, via the etheric body, by force utilization and solar radiation, w
take the place of the present methods. Healing will then fall practically into t
departments:

Transportation on sea and land will be largely superseded by the utilization

air routes and the transit of large bodies through the air, by means of
instantaneous use of the force or energy inherent in the ether itself, will take

We have another suggestive analogy in the fact that the devas of the fourth eth
will be soon swinging into recognized utility and that in the sixth subrace
deva evolution will be exceedingly prominent. The fourth plane is the plane of
one-ment for certain deva and human units, and certain groups (the fou
Creative Hierarchy and the sixth Deva Hierarchy) have a pronounced karma
work out together. One can now see the supreme importance of the hum
Hierarchy, the fourth in this sequence of planes and ideas. TCF 431.

We come now to our second point, that initiation veils a secret and that
revelation of that secret is imminent. Just what this secret is, I may not reve
but it is concerned with a peculiar type of energy which can be induced a
moment of supreme tension. The only possible hint I can give you in connect
with this mysterious matter is that it is closely related to the "Blinding Lig
which Saul of Tarsus saw on the road to Damascus and the "blinding lig
which accompanied the discharge of energy from the atomic bomb. DINA2 327

Death is to man exactly what the release of the atom appears to be; this the gr
scientific discovery of the release of atomic energy has demonstrated. T

nucleus of the atom is split in two. (This wording is scientifically incorrect.) T

event in the life experience of the atom releases a great light and a gr
potency; upon the astral plane, the phenomenon of death has a somewhat simi
effect and has a close parallel in the phenomena brought about by the release
atomic energy...

The wholesale destruction of forms which has been going on during the past f
years of war has produced phenomenal changes upon the astral plane and h
shattered an immense amount of the existing world glamor, and this is very, v
good. These happenings should result in less opposition to the inflow of the n
type of energy. EH 503.

One point should here be remembered, and that is that this phase applies to b
the great White Lodge and the Black Lodge - the one dedicated to the benefic
task of purifying and aiding all lives in the three worlds of material evolut
and to the release of the soul in form, and the other to the retardation of
evolutionary process and to the continuous crystallizing of the material for
which hide and veil the anima mundi.

Both groups have been profoundly interested and implicated in this matter of
release of energy from the atom and the liberation of its inner aspect, but th
motives and objectives were widely different. EXT 493.

The imminence of this release - inevitable and under direction - produced

enormous tension in hierarchical circles because (to express the id
colloquially) a race was on between the Dark Forces and the Forces of Light
acquire possession of the techniques necessary to bring about this liberation
needed energy.

Had the Dark Forces triumphed, and had the Axis Powers obtained possess
of the needed scientific formulas, it would have led to a major planetary disas
The released energy would have been used first of all to bring about
complete destruction of all opposing the forces of evil, and then it would ha
been prostituted to the preservation of an increasingly materialistic and n
idealistic civilization.

Germany could not be trusted with this power, for all her motives w
compelling wrong.You might here fall back on the trite religious platitude t
the innate good in humanity and mankind's inherent divinity would eventua
have triumphed, because naught can finally overcome the universal trend
good.

You are prone to forget that if the evil forces possess potencies which can dest
form in the three worlds on such a wide scale that the souls of advanc
aspirants and disciples, and those of initiates seeking incarnation, cannot co
into outer expression during a particular world crisis, then you have direfu
affected the time-schedule of the evolutionary process; you will have grea

delayed (perhaps for millennia of years) the manifestation of the kingdom

God. The time had come for that manifestation, and hence the powerful activ
of the dark forces.

This attempt to hinder the planned progress constituted a definite menace a

indicated a supreme danger and problem. The evil forces were closer to succ
than any of you have ever dreamed.

They were so close to success in 1942 that there were four months when
members of the spiritual Hierarchy had made every possible arrangement
withdraw from human contact for an indefinite and unforeseen period of tim

By 1941 the Germans knew that isotopes of U-238 in capturing neutrons beca
transformed into isotopes of plutonium, and Heisenberg was measuring wh
most such transformations took place. This would not be of much interest
reactor technology, but would be vital if building a bomb. The paraffin w
would have a function as a bomb part in connection with a technical probl
associated with plutonium isotopes.

In June 1942 at Leipzig, Heisenberg placed within an aluminium sphere ab

750 kilos of natural uranium, placed a concentric sphere of heavy water at
centre, dropped the radioactive source down the chimney and sat back. F
weeks later there was a disastrous fire and the experiment was terminated. Bu
what was this experiment intended to prove?

The United States invested hundreds of millions of dollars into urani

enrichment plants and plutonium breeder reactors. Germany, under heavy aer
bombardment and on a tight budget, could never have competed. What w
needed was a nuclear device of small magnitude which could be mass-produc
at small cost.

When an aluminium sphere of natural uranium powder is left to breed in

manner of Heisenberg's device, within about two years the plutonium bred by
238 capturing neutrons exceeds the figure of 7%. This is the magic figure fo
nuclear explosion of some sort.

If several hundred such spheres were left to breed for two years in mid-1942,
late 1944 Germany would have had a small arsenal of little nuclear devices.

The target was London. If Britain could be forced out of the war, even in l
1944 there was still a slim chance of success for Germany. The obvious means
delivering the weapons on London was the V-2 rocket. The little bombs weigh
less than a ton, and could fit easily into the space for the V-2 warhead. Th
was no need for tonnes of conventional explosive to explode the device rocket hit the ground at 3,500 per second. This speed was fast enough
