You should be familiar with topics we have already studied, as this information is
comprehensive
Fun http://www.cellsalive.com/puzzles/index.htm
Songs http://www.davincipress.com/
This text site is old, but has some very helpful animations etc
concept reviews on pH and buffer and kinetics, and animations on enzymes and cells

There will be a take home question for you to bring to the exam.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
GENERAL STUFF
Be sure to know the material we already covered. For example, we will probably have a
question in which you use the food label or other nutritional information and correlate it to
what we have learned so far.
Be able to recognize and describe membrane, protein, nucleic acid, carbohydrate and lipid
structures, their significance, and be able to compare their functional roles.
Know some of the features of cells (what we did in lab, text) and know the types of cells
and categories.
Know how to read food labels, and identify images of those we studied.
Be able to understand the macromolecules and where they come from food, and be able to
understand and recognize what type of molecular structure each type is, and the building
blocks from which it is made.
Be sure to know the relevant disease examples discussed in class. If you can recall
examples from the news that is great!
Know how to draw a membrane and describe the Fluid mosaic model. (with proteins!)
Be able to compare the types of lipids and fats, degree of unsaturation, and the effect on the
lipid properties.
Be able to describe osmosis and diffusion, especially as they relate to experiments in lab.
Be able to describe how molecules are transported, and about conformational changes in
proteins
Liposomes, vesicles into and out of cells- the mechanisms for passive and active transport.
CARBOHYDRATES
Understand the nomenclature (how we name things and the groups, such as ketoses and
aldoses)
Be able to draw a glycosidic inkage and know if it is alpha or beta (or recognize)
Know functions
Know mono, di and polysaccharides, and how to draw sucrose and another disaccharide.
Know things like lactose intolerance and why we cannot digest raffinose.
CELLS
Be able to recognize, label and define areas, or draw the cells, organelles and describe
functions.
Know examples of diseases related to errors in cell or cell parts (ie mebrane) function or
structure.
Be able to describe transport and signaling merging and comparing what you learned in
both ch 6 and 7.

REMEMBER!!
Exams will be a mixture of various types of questions.
I will give you a chance to buy an answer if you are totally stuck on a question.
There will be an opportunity for you to make up and answer your own question
for 5 points (but it must be a good question, and cannot already be a test
question).
All answers must fit in the space provided.
Knowledge is cumulative. If material is already covered, it should be retained and
might be part of a question on a future exam.
Follow directions- if the question asks for a table, drawing or essay, do the work
requested.
Plagiarism will result in an E or expulsion.
