In August of 1984, (Moon/Mars), I bought a gun at the
prompting of a friend. It was a Colt 45. In the past, the
neighborhood I was living in had been very peaceful.
Recently, though, several drug addicts had moved into a
house two blocks away. A wave of burglaries, plus my
friends encouragement, had convinced me to purchase
the weapon. The opportunity to flirt with my bad boy
persona, again, along with the feeling of power I derived
from owning a gun, also played a part in the decision. I
had just purchased the gun and had gone to my friends
house to get some bullets. I was walking back to my
house when a car pulled up in front of me. Four guys
from the drug house got out of the car and started
walking towards me in a way that clearly meant I was
about to be mugged. I pulled the gun out from under my
coat and pointed it at the ground in front of them. They
turned around, ran back into their car, and pulled away,
tires screeching.
