Geometry Measurement Enrichment Activity

You are to create the floor plan for a mansion, an amusement

park, or a sports complex.

• You will be showing your knowledge of perimeter, area of

parallelograms (squares, rectangles, and “slanted”
parallelograms), area of triangles, area of irregular shapes (i.e.:
a square with a little rectangle added on or a rectangle with a square
shape missing from the center), surface area, volume of
rectangular prisms, and circumference and area of circles.

• Create your plans on large white construction paper or white poster

board. Any size between those 2 dimensions is acceptable—nothing
smaller or larger, please. See me for needed materials (other than
colors, glue, or scissors). Make sure to bring your supplies to class
each day. (Your plans may be 2- or 3-dimensional, and you may use
other materials.)

• You may work on your project at home, but remember to bring it to

school to work on during math. If you finish your project early, you
may have free time to work on something constructive (book report,
pleasure reading, extra credit…)

• Your plans should include: labels (of various aspects of your

structure), color (to help differentiate areas and add interest),
various dimensions (measurements), and answers to questions
you’ve posed about places in your structure—these will show your
knowledge of the above skills. *Make sure all answers are labeled
correctly!* On the back, you will include all the formulas you used,
which structures you used them for, your work, and your answers. A
scoring rubric is listed on the back.

• You will participate in Skills Update each day. You may join in with
the class for any lessons and activities; our schedule for this unit is
copied on the back. If you are having difficulty with a concept, you
might choose to join us on that day. You will not be responsible for
homework. You will be responsible for keeping your notes on hand,
pop quizzes, preparing for the test, and taking the test.

• Your plans will be due by 2:00 on the last day of our unit (the day of
our test)—Friday, March 18.
Scoring rubric for geometry floor plans

The entire project is worth 60 points.

Neatness 5
Color 5
Dimensions labeled 10
Answers 40
For all types of problems 10
Work done correctly 20
Answers labeled correctly 10

For extra credit, research volume of cylinders and prisms (other than
rectangular) and include those in your project—3 extra credit points each
—maximum of 6 points.

You may choose to create a second floor plan (using the same
requirements) for extra credit project worth 30 points. Do not
rapidly create 2 low-quality projects in order to receive extra
credit. Do an excellent job on your first project before starting
the second.

If you are working with me, you may create a project at home,
during free time, or during recesses and Study Hall, to earn 30
points extra credit.

• Expectations during project work time

o Stay on-task
o Speak, if you must, so quietly that no one but you and
your partner can hear you.
o Do your own work—no one should do yours, and you
should not do another’s.
o Clean up your messes.
o Be ready to listen to and follow all directions.
o Make sure you understand all concepts—if not, join in
for lesson, ask 3 before me, or arrange a time to work
with me.
