Christian Conduct

Our Conduct concerning our witness

and our testimony to the world
• Conduct – agoge – root ago: “to lead.”
Conduct then is the life led, a way or course of
life.
• 2 Timothy 3:10
10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine,

manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering,

love, perseverance,
• We impact culture in part by our conduct.
• What motivates our conduct:
– What we read
– What and who we listen to
– What we believe
– Our view of the world

– Think of what our lives, and those lives we come

in contact with would be like if our conduct was
completely motivated by Christ and His Word.
How does society shape our conduct

• Society tells us our experience and our

opinions are all important. (it’s a relative
thing)
• No one else has the right to set the rules for
us.
• We’re supposed to refer first to our own tastes
and desires when making choices.
• Society tells us how to dress
• According to our own individuality
• Express yourself – the more skin the better
• Society tells us we deserve good things
• Keep up with the Jones’
• Determines what we must have to be happy
• Value is based on fad
• Society tells us our “religion” isn’t that
important
• Should be private and not public
• “You have your god and I have mine”
• Society tells us that we are free to ourselves
• In sexual relationships
• How we treat others
• As long as I am happy, and not bothering anyone
else, it’s o.k.
• Society tells us what constitutes success
• Paris Hilton is our role model
• Money, power, prestige are part of the definition
• Society tells parents to let their children
determine their own values
• Do what’s best for you
• Let your inner “self” determine values
• Any value older than the 1990’s is ancient history
What does the Word say our Conduct
should be
• 1 Thessalonians 5:12-23
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among
you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to
esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace
among yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly,
comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15
See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue
what is good both for yourselves and for all.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give
thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test
all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of
evil.
• Psalm 50:23
23 Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;

And to him who orders his conduct aright

(correctly)
I will show the salvation of God.”
• How do we get our steps ordered aright?
• Psalm 37:23
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the

LORD,
And He delights in his way.
• 2 Corinthians 1:12
12 For our boasting is this: the testimony of our

conscience that we conducted ourselves in the

world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not
with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God,
and more abundantly toward you.
• Simplicity (generous giving), godly sincerity
(honesty, as Godly characteristic)
• Not fleshly wisdom
• Philippians 1:27
27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of
Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am
absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand
fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together
for the faith of the gospel,
• Hebrews 13:5
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be
content with such things as you have. For He
Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor
forsake you.”
• James 3:13
13 Who is wise and understanding among you?

Let him show by good conduct that his works

are done in the meekness (inward humility
towards God) of wisdom.
• 1 Peter 1:15
15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be

holy in all your conduct,

• 1 Peter 2:12
12 having your conduct honorable among the

Gentiles, that when they speak against you as

evildoers, they may, by your good works which
they observe, glorify God in the day of
visitation.
• 1 Peter 3:2
2 when they observe your chaste conduct

accompanied by fear.
chaste – morally pure, modest
• 1 Peter 3:16
16 having a good conscience, that when they

defame you as evildoers, those who revile your

good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.
• This is how we gain a good report among those
we are witnessing to.
• Following the Word of God will leave us in this
condition and allow us, by His Spirit, to change
culture and impact those He has put in our path!
