1. Introduction
Even though all parts or organs of the body are important, the heart is the most
important of all as it holds the life of a person. If the heart stops beating (stops the
pumping of the blood), the person is considered as dead. The horoscope which consists of
twelve Rasis, nine Planets and Twenty Seven Nakshatras is like a heart and the most
important part which holds the life of the horoscope is called as Lagna.
When a child is born, what is its life term? Astrology explains the Characteristics
of a person. The mode of dressing, the gait, the manner, external appearance followed by
his kith and kin, wife, children, family position, friends, health, education, profession,
marriage, wealth, finance, independence and so on and so forth are all clearly seen
through the horoscope. But to deduce and arrive at the above information, Lagna is the
foundation or the principal root.
1.1. Horoscope
For us on earth, we consider that Sun is going round in the sky. This imaginary
path of the Sun is called as ecliptic. The explanation as given in Wikipedia is worth
reading at this juncture:
The ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun on the celestial sphere as seen from the Earths center
and also the plane of this path, which is essentially coplanar with the orbit of the Earth around the
Sun.
For about 9 degrees on either side of this ecliptic, a circular region is created and
this is called as Rasi Mandal or zodiac. For all practical purposes the zodiac is
considered to be a circle of 360 degrees. This 18 degree zodiac on either side of the ecliptic
holds within itself all the 9 planets and the 27 nakshatras.
The planets are not stationery but are constantly moving within this zodiac. Each
planet has its own speed of movement. When a child is born, the position of planets in
the zodiac is captured and that is called as a horoscope. This horoscope is called as Rasi
Chart.
1.2. Rasi
The movement of Sun around the earth is an apparent one as stated earlier. Earth
rotates around its own axis. It rotates towards the east. Based on this rotation of the earth

and as seen from a particular place on the earth, the position of planets in the zodiac is
determined and this becomes the basis for constructing a horoscope. The earths rotation
is opposite to that of the zodiac. The earth rotates once in every twenty four hours.
Since the zodiac is considered as a circle, there is neither beginning nor an end to
this. Hence our ancestors have considered the zero degree of the nakshatra Aswini as the
starting point of the zodiac. And this circle of 360 degree was divided into 12 parts with
each part having 30 degrees and is termed as Rasi. These 12 Rasis have been named as
below: (Only English names have been given for a better understanding)
1. Aries; 2.Taurus; 3. Gemini; 4. Cancer; 5. Leo; 6. Virgo; 7. Libra; 8. Scorpio; 9.
Sagittarius; 10. Capricorn; 11. Aquarius; 12. Pisces.
These Rasis begin in zero degree of Nakshatra Aswini and end in 30 degree of Revathi.
1.3. Lagna
As the rotation of the earth is anti-clockwise with respect to the zodiac, it crosses
all the 12 Rasis in a day. When a child is born at a particular time in a particular place that
Rasi which rises in the east at that point and place is called as the rising Rasi which is
otherwise termed as Lagna. This is also known as Janma Lagna. The exact longitude of
rising of that Rasi is called as the Lagna point. This is arrived at by taking into
consideration the longitude of the Sun at the time of birth. This Lagna is the important
Life force of the person like that of a heart to him. Based on this Lagna only, the
ownership of the Bhavas, Planets are determined.
If this Lagna is not calculated correctly, position of planets, its ownership as well as
its powers will change and hence the results will also vary. Hence the Lagna must be
worked out with utmost correctness.
1.4. Bhavas
Wherever Lagna is placed that is called as the First Bhava. The remaining 11 Rasis are
termed as- 2 - Dhana Bhava (wealth); 3 Bhratru Bhava (Co-borns); 4 Mathru Bhava
(Mother); 5 Pithru Bhava (Children); 6 Sathru Bhava (Enemies); 7 Kalathra Bhava
(Spouse); 8 Ayul Bhava (Longevity); 9 Pithru Bhava (Father);10 Karma Bhava
(Profession); 11 Labha Bhava (Gains) and 12. Moksha Bhava (Emancipation).
So based on Lagna the other Bhavas are determined as above.
1. Each planet has its own Karakatwa (Significance).
2. Each Bhava also has its own Karakatwa (Significance).

A planet gives its results based on its own significance coupled with the significance of
the ownership of the Bhava it gets (based on Lagna position).
1.5. Planetary Significances:

Though each planet indicates a variety of significances, a few of them are listed below:
1.5.1. Karakatwa of Sun:

Atmakaraka, self honour, father as well as fathers greatness, management, authority,
status, greatness, courage, influence, practice of medicine, Service of the King or
Government, Police employment, Lawyer, broking, engineering, truth, bravery, success,
capacity, heat, indulgence in pious deeds are some of the karakatwa of Sun. Indigestion,
eye disease, migraine and pitta heat are some of the diseases indicated by Sun.
1.5.2. Karakatwas of Moon:

Karaka for body, mind, mother, mother side relations, knowledge, fame, happiness,
reward from the King, riches, good habits, going to a foreign country by crossing the
ocean, efforts, taste towards arts, healthy organs. Government job and jobs in agriculture
department, oil wells especially petrol, Export, Import, horse racing. Business in foodshelter, money lending, trading in rice and other essential items required for daily life are
also indicated by Moon. Moon becomes karaka for diseases like cold and other water
borne diseases, asthma, dropsy of the belly, affliction to head, lungs, stomach, heart,
appendicitis, hernia, diabetes.
1.5.3. Karakatwas of Mars:

Siblings especially younger ones, relations of the siblings, philosophy, earth, bravery,
becoming a great person, a wise person, missiles, weapons, horror, enemy, valour,
stubbornness are some of the karakatwas of Mars. In the field of profession Mars is
indicative of jobs involving fire, goldsmithy, army, police, army chief or a general in the
army, treasury, administrator, pension related jobs, Doctor, surgeon, engineer, Village
officer, Post office, Mason. Mars also denotes kerosene, matchbox, explosives, housing
plots, bricks, tiles, lime, camphor, dhall or red grain, electronics, computer, electrical
tools, coral. In diseases Mars indicates Asthma, Tuberculosis, small-pox and blood.
1.5.4. Karakatwas of Mercury:

Astrology, efficiency, skill, eloquence, cleverness, religious practice, knowledge, Havan,

speaking the truth, power, court, prince, maintaining accounts, writer, journalism, head
of a religion, driving a vehicle, business, ambassador, investigation of Shastras, acting,
speaking with a double meaning, translator, postal department, lawyer, printing press,
keen intellect, friend, son-in-law are some of the karakatwas of Mercury. Mercury also
takes the karakatwa for childhood.
1.5.5 Karakatwas of Jupiter:

Intelligence, penance, good character, melody, system of law, greatness, devotion to deva
Brahmanas, becoming a conqueror of indriyas, himself becoming a guru, priest, melody,
idol for puja, mercy, gift, wealth, argument on law matters, body strength, treasury,
pilgrimage, earnestness, comforts, immaculate mind, protection, research in sacred
writings, puranas and religious history, children, elder siblings, stoutness, speech,
eloquence, consultation, preaching, attaining the eight supernatural powers through yoga
(Ashtama Siddhi), priest, thick friend, magical subjection are some of the karakas of
Jupiter. Gold, Jack tree, honey, sugarcane, banana are also denoted by Jupiter.
1.5.6. Karakatwas of Venus:

Fortune, vehicle, clothings, jewellery, fragrant things, finance, conjugal bliss, flowers, bed
and cot, lust, bed pleasures, marriage, poetical verses, speaking cunningly, union with
women, title or name of dignity, ship business, water travel, palanquin, dressings, cotton,
colours, food shelter, silver, music, dance, action, ministerial position, income from wife
are some of the indications of Venus.
1.5.7. Karakatwas of Saturn:

Punishment, service, carrying loads, thieving, slavery, asceticism, intoxicating drink,
honey, trade, sale of flesh, cultivation, longevity, command in village and town, grinding
in oil-press, creating disturbance, death, reason for death, accident, servant, loosing
position, low caste, imprisonment, bondage, gambling, eating stale food, life insurance,
old iron, old paper, sesame, fatty things, kerosene, skin and hides, root vegetables, palm
jiggery, mustard, black-gram, oil-cake, fertiliser, mud vessels, deer skin, spare parts of
vehicles, coal, carbon are some of the karakatwas of Saturn.
1.5.8. Karakatwa of Rahu:

Mystery, bite of serpent, having dip in Ganges, hunting, living in foreign country,
bondage, paternal grandfather, association with Muslim, change of religion, talking in
cruel way, form of exorcising, craftiness, witchcraft, sorcery, politics, worldly
knowledge, higher post, fame, engaging in piracy, cotton, medicine, electronics,
electricity, mirror or glass, printing press, industry, employment, cinema industry,
sandalwood tree, black-gram, brass, cement, leather processing are some of the
karakatwas of Rahu.
1.5.9. Karakatwa of Ketu:

Emancipation, attainment of knowledge, abstinence, higher position in yoga, black art
practice, self-realisation, sacrifice (havan), Vedas, itches, wounds, other religion, foreign
journey, wandering, distraction of mind, fainting, poisonous creature, committing
murder, small-pox, skin disease, sprains, breathing trouble, connection with a widow,
connection with a low caste woman are some of the Karakatwas of Ketu.
1.6. Planetary results on account of ownership of Bhavas:

We have already seen that the horoscope has a 12 compartments and each such division is
called as a Bhava which will be with reference to the Lagna. Each Bhava will have a Rasi
about which we have already seen and each Rasi has got a planet as its owner. All the 12
Rasis are distributed amongst the 7 planets beginning from Sun in which the two planets
Rahu and Ketu are omitted as they have not been given specific ownership. The given
below table will illustrate the Lagna, the Bhavas and its lordships clearly. Let us take the
Lagna as Taurus.

A planet depending on the signification it attains on account of ownership of a

bhava as well as its own significations produces the results based on its placement in the
horoscope.
With this introduction let us proceed to analyse all the 12 Lagnas.

2.1. General Points:

Out of the 12 Rasis the first Rasi is Aries. The 12 Rasis are considered as the limbs
of Kalapurusha. Aries is considered as the Head of the Kalapurusha. For an individual the
Lagna will denote the head.
Aries is a moveable, Odd and odd-footed (vishamapada or ojapada) Rasi. Its
symbol is a Ram or sheep. It is a male Rasi and is considered as malefic or cruel. It has a
bilious (Pitta) temperament. It is blood-red in complexion, strong during night, related to
Kings, rises with its back (Prishtodaya) and its ruler is Mars. It has a prominent (big)
physique, indicates courage, wanders in hills, a quadruped sign, resides in the east,
predominates in Rajo guna and it is fiery in nature. Aries belongs to Kshatriya Varna.
The Nakshatras included in this Rasi are Aswini, Bharani and 1st Pada of Krittika. This is
also the Moolatrikona house of Mars and extends up to 12 degrees. The remaining 18
degrees is considered as its own house. Aries is indicative of precious stones, forests and
minerals.
In this Rasi
Jupiter and Rahu are friends, Ketu is enemy, Moon, Venus and Mercury are equal, Sun
gets exalted and Saturn gets debilitated. Suns deep exaltation point is 10 degrees and
Saturns deep debilitation point is 20 degrees.
2.2. General results:
Native born with this Lagna have lean body, long neck. Their nose will be
prominent and they will possess beauty. They will have a majestic appearance.
Courageous, intelligent, cleverness, humbleness, eloquences, capability of argument, dear
to the general public, stubbornness, interested in Shastras, hot-tempered, will have a
helping tendency sacrificing his own benefits, capable of taking any responsible work and
finishing it are some of the qualities of persons born under this Lagna. But he often gets
excited.

He has a vast general knowledge. He will be following his own intentions and
thoughts. He will engage in activities which will not harm his status and dignity. Even
though he appears to be stupid person, he is capable of keenly watching what is going on
around him. His walk will be erect; his eyesight will be tender but will have keenness.
Long neck, long nose, beautiful lined teeth, bushy eyebrows, sliding shoulder, long hands,
prominent long ears, thick curling hair are the appearance of Aries Lagna people.
2.3. Results of Nakshatra:

Those who are born in Aswini Nakshatra are capable of finishing the taken work
without any shortcomings, a liberal donor, a valiant person, will not tell a lie, interested
in ornaments, famous but will get angry even for small things.
Persons born under Bharani Nakshatra are dear to their parents, intelligent,
famous, clever, and eloquent and will have less sleeping comforts.
Persons born under the first pada of Krittika will be following the assigned
customs, a highly learned and eminent person, a nobleman, a veteran warrior or hero,
wise person but will be prone to diseases.
These are the opinion of the author of Jataka Alankaram and they are only general
results.
2.4. Results of planetary ownerships:

2.4.1 Mars:
Mars is also owner of the 8th house besides being the Lagna Lord. As per the rule
If the Lagna Lord also becomes lord of the 8th house he becomes full benefic, Mars is a
fully benefic planet for Aries Lagna. If the army Chief Mars is placed in Lagna in his
own house or in the exaltation position in the 10th (in Capricorn), the native will have a
perennial blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. Education will be in the fields of engineering,
Science or Law. Profession may also be in the same line. Courage, very active, engaging
in anything with seriousness, always suppressing others with authority, luck in all
matters are all the results that Mars will produce. If Mars is placed in the 8 th house, long
life, foreign journey, research activities will b the results. If Mars is placed in the 1 st, 2nd,
5th, 6th, 10th or 11th houses, that will yield good results for Aries Lagna people. Mars should
be in strength. If Mars is weak, longevity will be curtailed. In addition there is a

possibility of getting affected by diseases like hernia, hydrocele, piles, Phlegm which will
yield bad results. Mars gets debilitated in the 4th house in Cancer and If Jupiter joins as
he is exalted there Mars gets Neecha Bhanga.
2.4.2. Venus:
Venus gets the lordship of the 2nd and 7th house for Aries Lagna. Aries being a
movable sign, both the places are maraka places and hence Venus becomes a worst
malefic. Further ownership of the 7th house being a Kendra, Kendradhipatya Dosha also
is applicable. But both the houses are important houses. 2nd house indicates family,
finance, education, speech and eloquence thereof, right eye, food, status. 7th house
indicates spouse, vigour, business, partners. Hence these should get strengthened. As the
saying goes If a bad fellow gets spoiled he will produce Rajayoga, if Venus is placed in
the bad houses like the 6th, 8th or the 12th, he will do good. If he is placed in the 2nd house
then also he will give benefic results. If he is in the 2nd house with Mars and Jupiter, in
the 4th house with Moon, in the 9th house with Jupiter or Mars, with Sun in Lagna, with
Sun and Mercury in the 11th house will give good results. If he is placed in the 12th house
of exaltation, that will produce good Yoga results. Venus should not be placed in any
Kendra.
The spouse of Aries Lagna native will be higher in all aspects of life or at least
equal. Fortune is expected through spouse.
2.4.3. Mercury:
Mercury owns the two bad houses the 3rd and the 6th house and as such becomes a full
malefic. For Mars, Mercury is an enemy, though Mercury treats Mars as equal. The third
house indicates acting on own, courage, capability of writing, air travel, security,
information and broadcasting. It also indicates profession in these lines. Hence If
Mercury is with strength, the financial position will improve. The higher he is spoilt, the
better will be the economy of the native. But at the same time the results of the third
house will get spoiled. It is better if Mercury is placed in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 9th or 10th houses.
It is not that much good if he is placed in the 11th house. Being lord of the 6th house, if he
is placed in the 2nd house, the native may be a teacher or a professor.
2.4.4. Moon:

Mother, house, vehicle, comforts, skill, milk, cow, relations are the indications of the 4 th
house lord Moon and he becomes the Matru Karaka. Being a karaka for mind and also
because of the friendship the Lagna lord holds with Moon, he becomes karaka for
excitedness. Moon is considered as the queen of planets. Even if he is placed in his own
4th house, Karka Masthi Bhaveshu dosha will not be applicable and the effects on
account of this will be only less. Good education, Government job, Ship engineer, fitness,
chemistry, research will be the line of profession if he is placed in the 10th house. Moon
should not be placed in the hidden houses of 6th, 8th or 12th. He should also not be placed
in the enemy house and should not be in debilitation. (Scorpio which is the 8 th house for
Aries Lagna is the house of debilitation of Moon. There are no enemies to Moon which
should also be borne in mind.) If Moon is placed in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th or 10th is good.
2.4.5. Sun:
The 5th house is an important house and is indicative of Purva Punya, learning,
conception, discourse of the learned, attainment of Mantra powers and Excellency of
knowledge. Sun, who is considered as the King of the Planets and also a friend of Lagna
Lord holds the ownership of the most important house. Benefits through Government or
Officers, success in examinations pertaining to the department where one is employed
and securing a higher post are some of the benefits of the 5th lord. He is a complete Yoga
karaka planet. If he conjoins Jupiter or Moon it will be a Rajayoga. If he is exalted in
Lagna, the native may become a Judge or a high Government official. If he is placed in
the 9th house, there will be fame amongst the kinsmen, writing famous books,
Government job are all possible. Children will have good education and status and will
shine well. If this 5th lord is in the 10th house, then also the above stated results will
materialize. If he is placed in the 4th house, happiness of mother, benevolence of Goddess
Lakshmi, fame, authoritative post and procreation of children will be some of the benefic
results that will come. Generally, being the 5th lord, if he is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th
house it is good. Places other than the 6th, 8th or the 12th and the houses which are inimical
to him as also its debilitation house (Libra) are all good.
2.4.6. Jupiter:
Jupiter owns the 9th and 12th house is a friend of the Lahna Lord, Mars. 9th is a
strongest trikona and hence the blemish on account of the 12th lordship gets minimized
and makes Jupiter a full Rajayoga planet. 9th house indicates father, happiness on account
of father, devotion, Dharma, doing virtuous or religious deeds, wealth. As these are good

results the 9th lord should be strong in the horoscope. If so, fame, position, income,
education, house, vehicle and such other good things will be coming in the life of the
native and on account of which superior things in life as well as status will be bestowed.
12th house is the house of emancipation or Moksha. Additionally bed comforts, job in a
foreign country and loss are denoted by it. Since the 9th house is the Moolatrikona of
Jupiter, the results of the 9th house will dominate and Jupiter will behave like a Karpaga
tree. 9It is a miraculous tree in the world of Indra yielding whatever desired). If Jupiter
is placed in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th or 10th houses good results will be forthcoming. If he is
placed in the 6th house his aspect will be on the 10th house of livelihood, if placed in the 8th
house, the aspect will be on the 2nd house of wealth and the 4th house of comforts and if
placed in the 12th house his aspect will be on the 4th house of comforts and the 8th house of
longevity and hence all these aspected houses will be flourishing. If he is in the 10th house,
he is capable of inflicting death also.
2.4.7. Saturn
Saturn becomes the lord of 10th and 11th houses. 10th house is the house of profession or
business, authoritative position, true wisdom, worship, devotion to God, greatness or
honour, to wash the sins of the father. 11th house indicates elder siblings, gains, clothing,
collection of ornaments, knowledge, servants, younger wife (2nd wife). Being the Kendra
lord of the 10th house and the lord of the 11th badhakasthana Saturn becomes malefic. (For
movable Lagna 11th house is the Badhakasthana). Because of this blemish only the health
will get affected but the gains will not be disturbed is the thinking of some elders. If the
lord of the Badhakasthana is placed in a trikona, the Dosha gets nullified and he becomes
a benefic is the ruling given by Pulippani Sithar. This is applicable to all Lagnas. Hence
Saturn must be placed either in the 5th house or in the 9th house and if so the results of the
Badhaka lord will not happen. The profession or business will be based on his Karkatwa.
Since it is a sign of a labor or an industrious person, many times, the profession will be
such as getting a monthly salary. Business may be dealing in items like - Iron, fertilizer,
sugar-cane, grains, oil, root vegetables, old iron parts, and spare parts of machines.
Engineering education connected Vehicle, airplane, ship is also possible. May indulge in
politics also. In case Saturn is associated or conjunct with Sun and Rahu and with the 2nd
house or lord of the 2nd house, the field of education may be medicine. Saturn is called as
the King Maker. If he is placed in the 10th or the 11th house with benefic strength, even a
person placed in rubbish will be lifted up and placed on the top of a tower. That is to say
even if born in a poor family he will attain the greatest heights in life. But he is also
capable of plunging the native into an abyss suddenly. The 10th house of Capricorn and

the 10th house from the Moon as well as the Navamsa Lord of Saturn will determine the
natives profession or business.
2.5. Other treatises on Aries Lagna:

It is worth remembering some findings in various other treatises which talk about Aries
Lagna.
2.5.1 Chandra Kaviyam ( A Tamil treatise):

According to Chandra Kavyam, even though Jupiter and Venus are malefics but will not
inflict death. Saturn and Mercury are capable of inflicting death. Out of these who will
be the maraka will have to be analysed and stated. The relevant Tamil verses are
produced here:

2.5.2. Jataka Chandrika:

Meaning: A person born in Aries Lagna has Saturn, Mercury and Venus ill disposed
towards him. Jupiter and Sun are auspicious. The simple combination of Jupiter and
Saturn produces no beneficial results.

Meaning: But on the other hand Jupiter when combined with Saturn, not only does not
give good but will actively produce evil. Venus does not himself kill the native although
he possesses death-inflicting powers.
Jataka Chandrika goes on to add that evil planets like Saturn etc. will kill the native. He
takes Saturn first and then Mercury and occasionally includes Moon. Mercury is bad as
he owns the 3rd and the 6th and Moon because of the Kendradhipatya Dosha become bad.
Moon if he is full, he will be classified as good and his owning one of the quadrants
(Kendra) is bad and he may, by evil combinations, produce death. But if he is weak, then
his owning the quadrant is auspicious and he will do good.
2.5.3. Pulippani Jothidam:
Saturn will give lot of malefic results. If he gives home, money and land, he will cut
short longevity. On the contrary if he occupies trikonas, the native will live long with
money. On no account Saturn should occupy a Kendra.

2.7.1. Mothers death:
In the following Mahadasa-Antardasa it is likely that the natives mother may be
subjected to diseases or some troubles or even death. The Dasa, Antardasa are
interchangeable.
In Rahu Dasa the Antardasas of Rahu, Saturn and Venus.

In the above given dsas-antardasas, father may be afflicted by diseases or troubles or
losses and even death.
2.7.3. Siblings blemishes:

The Antardasas of Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the dasa of Jupiter.
The Antardasas of Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the dasa of mercury.
The Antardasas of Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the dasa of Rahu.
In the above periods, there is a possibility of enmity amongst brothers, troubles and
losses on account of siblings or troubles and losses for siblings or death to them.
2.7.4. Marriage:
Jupiter dasa Saturn, Mercury, Sun, Moon, Rahu Antardasas.
Saturn dasa Venus, Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Rahu Antardasas.
Sun dasa Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Sun, Rahu Antardasas.
Venus dasa Sun, Moon, Saturn, Mercury, Rahu Antardasas.
In the above stated periods, marriage is likely for both the boy and the girl. Further for all
Lagna natives, the houses related to marriage are the 2nd, 7th, 8th and 12th. Related to
marriage, the above houses indicate the family, Spouse, Mangalya (a marriage badge),
bed pleasures respectively. Lords of these houses or the planets placed in these houses are
also capable of bringing marriage in their dasa-antardasa. Experience shows that when a

person is running Rahu dasa, Mercury Antardasa or Mercury dasa-Rahu Antardasa,

marriage happens.
2.7.5. Kalathra Dosha (Blemish of spouse):

In the above dasa-antardasa, wife or the husband may suffer hardship, losses, some crisis,
diseases or death. Experience shows that in the above periods marriage as well as
separation/death/miseries have happened. Hence if marriage does not happen in the
above periods it is good.
If Sun, Mercury and Rahu are conjoined and placed in Taurus, Libra or Aquarius it
is doubtful whether marriage will take place. Even if it happens it is a question whether
there will be any sexual relations between the couple.

2.8. Maraka planets:

Venus, Mercury and Saturn are the maraka planets. Possible combinations are given
below:
1. Venus being the lord of 2nd and 7th becomes a maraka. But as per the general rule, if
a planet is lord of two maraka houses, it will not inflict death. Hence Venus will
not be a maraka. This fact is stated in Chandra Kaviyam, Thandavamalai and
Jataka Alankaram.
2. Mercury being lord of the 3rd and 6th, he becomes a strong maraka.
3. Saturn being lord of the badhakasthana (11th house), he may also be a maraka.
4. Since Jupiter owns the 12th house, if he is placed in the 10th house he will kill. If in
the 10th he is with Venus both husband and wife may die.
5. Since Mars owns the 8th house also, if he conjoins Venus, the native may die by
injury on the head.
6. If Mars joins Mercury, death may be due to diseases of the head.
7. Saturn, Mercury, Venus conjunction may bring about death in their dasas.

As a conclusion, we may say that Mercury or Saturn may be a maraka. But a decision is
to be taken based on the strength of these planets.
2.9. General maraka rules:

1. For movable Lagna lord of the 2nd and 7th are maraka. Lord of 3rd and 7th are the
marakas for Fixed Lagna natives. For Dual Lagna, the marakas are the lords of 7 th
and 11th houses.
2. Planet/s placed in the maraka places are stronger than the lords of the maraka
places in inflicting death.
3. Planets conjoined with lords of the maraka houses are stronger than the lords of
the maraka places in inflicting death.
4. Even if a benefic has conjoined a maraka lord, he may bring about death.
5. The 3rd and 8th houses are also the maraka houses. Hence lords of these places are
also capable of bringing the death. If they combine with other maraka lords, they
are empowered to become death inflicting planets.
6. The planet that has the least strength in the horoscope may also become a maraka.
7. If the Ayush karaka Saturn (Karaka for longevity) becomes a maraka lord or if he
conjoins or associates with another maraka planet, he will keep aside all the planets
and himself will inflict death.

2.10. Combinations for Yogas:

The following combinations will give a yoga for Aries Lagna natives:
1. If Sun and Moon conjoins it gives Rajayoga.

8. Sun in the 5th in own house, Moon in the 4th in own house and Jupiter exalted will
produce Rajayoga.
9. Sun in Lagna in exaltation, Jupiter and Moon in the 9th house and Saturn in the 10th

11. Exalted Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn produce Rajayoga.

3.4.1 Venus
Venus is the Lagna lord and also owns the 6th house. The 6th house Libra is the
Moolatrikona place for Venus and is to be considered as a benefic. Some authorities think
that being a Lagna lord he will be a benefic. But in spite of his lordship over Lagna, he is
to be considered as a malefic only. If he is in strength, the results of the 6th house will
flourish but finance will get spoiled. It is better if he joins Moon or Sun or Mercury.
Normally during the dasa of Venus only mixed results are expected. It is better if he is
weak rather than gaining strength. Lower abdomen, hidden places will be affected by
Venus. Women may get trouble in the uterus.
3.4.2 Mercury
Mercury owns the 2nd and 5th house from Taurus Lagna. Since the 5th house is the
Moolatrikona sign of Mercury, he becomes a benefic. Be it mathematics or any other

4.4. Results of Planetary ownerships

4.4.1. Mercury
Owner of Lagna and the 4th house. Even though Kendradhipatya Dosha exists,
because of ownership of Lagna becomes a benefic. If he is beneficially placed and is with
strength long life, health, finance, property will be acquired. Otherwise, if he is badly
placed many difficulties, loss of property, enmity with relations as well as opposition
from them, mental pain, great anger will be the bad results that will be coming. If he is
placed in the 4th, 5th or 9th houses, higher education like graduation, house, vehicles will be
possible. If he conjoins with the lord of the 10th house, a novel house may be acquired. If
placed in the 2nd house and is not aspected by anybody finance and house and if placed in
the 11th house good education, finance, land, house and vehicles will be forthcoming.
Placement of 4th lord in the 10th is good. If he is placed in the 8th and without association
with anybody long life, education and fame will be the result.
4.4.2 Moon
Owner of the 2nd house of family, finance and education. Being the house of

house, the general opinion is that he is a malefic. Since 3rd house is an Upachaya place it
will be giving only growth. Younger sibling, courage, writing capacity, success or failure,
travel will all be denoted by the 3rd house and hence placement of Sun must be good and
he should be with strength. If it be so, there will be many younger siblings and there will
be good understanding with them. Ability to discussion will increase. If he is placed in
the 10th house it will give yoga. Finance will be better. Good placement for Sun are the 3rd,
4th, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th or 11th.
4.4.4 Venus
Venus owns the 5th and the 12th houses. Being the lord of the 5th house of Purva
Punya, he becomes a benefic. If he is with strength, addition of children, dignity,

to the 5th house i.e. the 9th house, in the 10th house in an exalted position or in the 11th

4.5. Benefic-Malefic explanations

4.5.1. Benefics
Since Mercury is the Lagna Lord and Venus lord of the 5th trikona these are the
two benefic planets.
4.5.2 Yogakarakas
Many scriptures state that 5th lord Venus is the only yogakaraka. But in
Thandavamalai, it is stated that the 9th lord even if he gets any other lordship or conjoins
any other malefic he will not give malefic results. Hence Saturn and Venus are capable of
giving Yoga.
4.5.3. Malefics

This is a verse (N0. 53) from Chandra Kaviyam meaning that Moon will not kill.
The rest three planets namely Mars, Jupiter and Sun are capable of inflicting death.
As per the general rule lords of the 2nd and 7th house are marakas and as per this
rule Moon and Jupiter are the marakas. For a common sign the lords of the 7 th and 11th
house are special marakas and hence Jupiter and Mars become special marakas. Since Sun

many authors have stated that Moon will not kill. Since Sun is a friend of Lagna lord

Moolatrikona sign. 3rd house indicates courage, success, younger siblings, army, friends,

above stated results will be good. Again being a malefic if he is spoiled good finance will

Rajayoga planet. He should be with strength. If he is placed in the own house of 5 th,
getting progeny, support from children, writing ability, research in Shastras, oratory will
be forthcoming. If he is placed in the exaltation house of 10th, graciousness of Goddess
Mahalakshmi, higher posts, admiration by people, fame amongst kinsmen and similar
such Rajayoga results will be there. May be working in army or police. When he is
exalted and Moon is either in own house or in exaltation or to his 7th (Moon) in Scorpio
Mars is placed will produce a dhana yoga. Even if he is debilitated in Cancer, being the
4th from the 10th house and 5th from the 9th house, good results will be there. If exalted
Jupiter joins such Mars, great Rajayoga results will come. Even if the other planets are
spoiled, if Mars alone is with strength it is enough, there will be very good results after
the age of 40. Wherever Mars is placed, there will be no Mars Dosha for this Lagna.

Dosha. The 3rd and 12th lord Jupiter is also a malefic. Since Mars is the lord of Badhaka
place, he is also considered as malefic by many except the author of Chandra Kaviyam.

Since Venus gets the ownership of a Kendra and a trikona he is the full Rajayoga
planet. Since 9th house is a strong trikona and owner of this house Mercury also becomes
a yogakaraka. Since the 9th house is the Moolatrikona of Mercury, the lordship of the 6th
house will not be affected. If Mercury and Venus conjoin it will be a great Rajayoga.

1. Yoga will result if the 5th and 10th lord Venus is placed in the 5th house.

profession is possible only if he is placed in his 3rd or the 10th house which are his own
houses. Since 3rd house is a maraka place for fixed Lagna, if Mars is with strength health
may not be satisfactory. Other aspects like siblings, courage, success, business etc. will be

As per the special rule Venus being the owner of the 4 th Kendra and the 9th trikona,
becomes a Rajayoga planet. A doubt may arise that Kendradipatya Dosha as well as
badhakathipatya Dosha may come. But Thandavamalai says (as per sloka below) when a
planet gets both Kendradipatya dosha as well as a badhakathipatya Dosha that planet will
give a Rajayoga.

Owner of the good bhava the 5th house and the bad bhava of 8th house. 8th house for
Mercury is his own, exaltation and Moolatrikona house only the malefic ownership gets
strengthened. Hence he is a malefic. If he is in his own house in the 5th, the results of the
5th house will be good. If Saturn or Venus conjoins Mercury good results will follow. If
he is placed in the 8th house and is not associated with other malefics that will give rise to
Sarala Yoga. Long life, strong mind, courage, good learning, finance and children will be
good. If he is placed in the 9th house, due to the Bhavat bhava result putra bhava will be

strengthened, but debts, worries and troubles will also be there. Generally it is good if he
gets associated with the benefics.
12.4.6. Moon
Owner of the 6th house diseases, debts and enemies, Moon becomes a malefic. If he
is with strength Asthma, cold in the chest, stomach pain, appendicitis, sinus will be the
diseases with which the native will be afflicted. If he gets debilitated in the 10 th it will be
good. There is an opinion it will be good if he exchanges houses with Lagna Lord Saturn.
12.4.7. Sun
Owner of the 7th house. Even though father of Saturn, both are enemies. Still being
a Kendra lord he is considered as a benefic by many. If he is placed in the own house of

gets the ownership of the 10th Kendra he is considered as a malefic because for a fixed
Lagna the 3rd bhava is a maraka place and Mars gets the ownership of the 3rd house too.
12.5.3. Yogakrakas
Thandavamalai says Venus alone is capable of giving yoga results. Mercury was
not considered as a yogakaraka since he gets the ownership of the 8th house. Jataka
Alankara says Mercury is also a yogakaraka. Chandra Kaviyam says if Venus and Mars
conjoin there will be Rajayoga. Hence Venus if placed alone results will be good. If
Mercury, Mars and Venus conjoin there will be good results.

profession, dignity from Government will be some of the good results. If he is spoiled,
the above stated good results, especially name and finance will be spoiled. He should not
be placed in Kendra. He can be placed in other houses. If he is in the 4th house it will be a
Simhasana Yoga. High post, authority and status will be there. For a dual Lagna 7th house
is a maraka place as well as a Badhaka place and hence he should not be placed either in
Lagna or the 7th house. It will be good if he is placed in a trikona.
Politics, Government office, education, judiciary, treasury, Income tax, bank,
medicine and religion are some of the fields where the native may get employment.

both being a bad house Venus becomes a malefic. Since 3rd and 8th house indicates
longevity, if Venus is with strength finance will not be good. If he is placed in own 8th
house it will be Sarala Yoga. If he is exalted in Lagna long life, name, fame will increase.
Kendra and trikona placements are also good.
13.4.4. Mercury
Owner of the two Kendra 4th and 7th Mercury gets the blemish of ubhaya
kendradipatya Dosha and becomes a malefic. An enemy of Lagna lord. But is a karaka for
comforts, learning, mother, house, vehicles, spouse, partner in business, married life and
general comforts. If he is conjoined or aspected by Jupiter and/or Mars and is with
strength, finance will be good. If he is placed in the 2nd, 6th or the 8th house health will get
spoiled. If he is placed in trikona, Kendradipatya Dosha will leave and beneficial results
will be there. Placement in Lagna or the 7th house is not good. Dosha will aggravate. If he
is placed in the 10th house education and profession will be good.
13.4.5. Moon
Since Moon gets the ownership of the 5th house of Purva Punya becomes a benefic.
It is better if he gains strength. Finance, knowledge, intelligence, prophecy, luck will find
an upward trend. Intelligent sons will be born. Gods benevolence will be there. If he is
spoiled the above stated good results will not be there. If he is placed in 11 th house it will
be a dhana yoga. If he is in Cancer along with Mars, Moon dasa will be a yoga dasa.

finance will be spoiled. If he conjoins Saturn many troubles will be given by him. If he is
placed in the own house of 6th, he will be an independent monarch. But will be of
obstinate character and will get their work done. For the sake of fame will waste their

Owner of the 12th house of loss and the special maraka place of 11th house being the
dual Lagna which is also the house of gains, becomes a malefic. House of gains is an
important house. He should not be spoiled. If he is with strength, income will increase. If
he is spoiled income will go down and health will also be spoiled. If he is placed in the 3rd,
5th, 6th, 8th or the 11th house it will be good. If Saturn is Aries and Mars is in Capricorn it

and Moon are benefics. If Mars and Jupiter conjoin (The verse ends here and the result of

Moon due to its ownership of the 5th trikona and Mars due to the ownership of the
9th trikona are considered as benefics. This has been accepted by almost all.
13.5.2. Malefics

Venus due to bad ownership of the 3rd and 8th house is a malefic. Mercury, owner
of the 4th and 7th house due to the blemish of maraka place as well as Badhaka place
becomes a malefic. Sun, owner of the 6th house of enemies, debts and diseases becomes a
malefic. Saturn, owner of the 11th house which is a special maraka place for the dual Lagna
and also because of the lordship of the 12th house of losses becomes a malefic.
13.5.3. Maraka Planets

Meaning: The owner of the 6th house of disease, debt and enemy, Sun is a maraka.
Owner of the 3rd and 8th house Venus is also a maraka. Strength less Saturn is a maraka.
Mercury is also a maraka. All the four will inflict death in their dasa.
Above stated malefics namely Mercury, Saturn and Sun are capable of killing.
Mars even though is owner of the 2nd house of maraka will not kill as per Thandavamalai.
Saturn due to the ownership of the 11th house of special maraka place and Mercury getting
the ownership of the 7th house of maraka become strong marakas. Others will inflict
death depending upon their placement. That is to say that the other marakas stated above
will kill if they are placed in maraka places or other bad houses.
13.5.4. Yogakarakas
Moon due to ownership of the 5th house, Mars due to the 9th lordship and Jupiter on
account of the 10th lordship are yogakarakas. Jataka Alankara says that Mars and Moon
are yogakarakas and that is because of Jupiter. Thandavamalai says if Jupiter conjoins
Mars and Moon there will be yoga and Jupiter left alone will not give any yoga. Chandra
Kaviyam says that Jupiter is a malefic but if he conjoins Mars will become good.
Generally for any Lagna the conjunction of 9th and 10th lord produces Dharma
Karmadhipati yoga and if another trikona lord viz. 5th lord joins there will be Rajayoga.
Hence Moon, Mars and Jupiter conjunction will produce Rajayoga.
13.6. important events and their timings

The Antardasas of the planets placed in the 4th, 7th, 8th and the 10th from Rahu, Ketu,
Jupiter and Saturn.
The Antardasa of the planet/s placed in the 4th or 8th from Moon or the planet/s
conjoined with Moon.
Antardasa of Planets placed in Virgo.
In the above periods mother may be facing losses or problems or diseases or death. There
might be enmity with her or separation from mother.
13.6.2. Blemish to father.

The Antardasas of the planets placed in the 8th, 9th or the 10th house from the planets
Rahu, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Sun.
The Antardasas of the planets placed in the 8th, 9th or the 10th house from Taurus, Cancer,
Saturn and Sun.
In the above periods enmity with father or separation from him will be there. There
might be losses on account of father. Father may be facing problems or will suffer losses
or may be affected by disease and he may die also.
13.6.3. Marriage

In the above periods there might be difference of opinion with the spouse or separation or
divorce. There might be troubles or losses on account of spouse or spouse may suffer
from diseases or he/she may die.
13.6.5. Children
Moon dasa, Rahu dasa, Jupiter dasa, Mercury dasa, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Sun
Antardasas.
Dasas of Planets placed in Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces or their Antardasas
birth of children is possible. Auspicious and good results may be experienced by the
children.

Moon dasa, Rahu dasa, Jupiter dasa, Mercury dasa, Rahu, Saturn and Venus Antardasas.
In the above dasas or Antardasas there might be problems or losses due to children or
difference of opinion with them or separation or death of children. Children may be
subjected to problems and diseases.

In the dasa-antardasa of planets placed in 2nd, 6th, 8th, 10th or the 11th house there will be
problems with the sibling or enmity with them or separation from them. Siblings may
face difficulties or may be afflicted by diseases or death.
13.6.8. Death
Mercury dasa, Rahu dasa, Sun dasa, Saturn dasa, Venus dasa-Antardasas of Sun, Mars,
Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus In these periods death may come or death like sufferings
will be felt or will be afflicted by diseases or may face problems and losses.

13.7. Combinations for yoga

1. If the lord of gains Saturn is in the 12th, even then he will give good results.
2. If Moon and Mars exchange houses (2nd and 5th) Moon dasa will be a yoga dasa.
3. Dhana yoga and yoga for vehicle will result if Moon, Mars and Mercury are
conjoined in Capricorn.
4. Yoga will result if Jupiter is placed in own house in Sagittarius.
5. Rajayoga will result if Moon is exalted, Sun is in own house, Mercury is exalted;
Venus in Libra and Jupiter is in Sagittarius.
6. If Jupiter and Mars conjoin there will be yoga.
7. If the 8th lord is placed in 3rd, 6th or 8th house there will be yoga.
8. If Sun, Mercury and Venus conjoin in 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th there will be yoga.
9. If Sun, Venus and Saturn conjoin in 3rd, 6th or 8th, there will be yoga.
10. If Moon, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter conjoin in 4th house there will be yoga.
11. Yoga will result if Jupiter is in Lagna, Mars is in the 9th house and Saturn is in the
12th house all in their own houses.
12. Venus dasa will be auspicious if Saturn and Moon in Lagna, Mars in the 11th house
and Venus in the 6th house.
13. Saturn in Aquarius and Mars in Capricorn will give yoga.
14. If Jupiter, Mars and Moon conjoin in any house there will be yoga.
15. If Jupiter is placed in Cancer, beneficial results will follow.
16. If Jupiter is placed in 4th house or 9th house, learning, finance and status will be
good.
17. It is good if Mars is placed in 2nd or 9th or 11th house.
18. If Moon is placed in the 3rd or the 5th house, finance, children both will be available.
13.8. For women

Women born in this lagna will be walking beautifully and with preciseness. Will
assimilate anything without the knowledge to others by observing keenly. Will have no

deceit. Will not go behind their duties. Will be showing good hospitality. Will like costly
clothes. Will be pious. Marriage may get delayed. Married life will be good. Will have
own house. Very good for friendship. Good character and good conduct will be there.

14. Explanation on timing of important events

So far I have explained about the 12 Lagnas. I feel that the timing of events given
will be of some use to all. It is enough if we know the dasa and Antardasa running for a
native when he has come for consultation. One can easily say whether the event asked
for by the native will happen or not from the Dasa-Antardasa given for each important
events.
It is stated that in a particular dasa and particular Antardasa/s, a certain event will
happen. It is also possible to happen the other way also viz. In the Antardasas stated may
become dasa and dasa may become Antardasa. For example for Pisces Lagna it is given
that In Moon dasa, Jupiter Antardasa marriage will happen. Alternately marriage is also
likely to happen in Jupiter dasa-Moon Antardasa. Likewise for all events it is to be
understood. That is to say that the dasa-antardasa are interchangeable.
Additionally, if the Gochara or the transit of planets are also taken into
consideration while pronouncing the results, there may not be any mistakes. The aspect
of Jupiter bestows many beneficial results while in transit. If Jupiter is aspecting the
Bhava relevant to the question asked by the native or the Bhava Lord, the event will be a
successful one and most likely to materialize. For example, in the above case if the transit
Jupiter aspects the 7th bhava or its lord then marriage is definite.
14.1 Double transit

Double transit is said to happen when Jupiter and Saturn in their transit aspect one
and the same Bhava. The results indicated by the Bhava is bound to flourish. In the
example cited above if both Jupiter and Saturn aspect the 7th bhava, the results of the 7th
bhava will definitely materialize.
Jyotish has been written keeping in mind the male gender. However, it is
applicable to female also though there might be slight changes and/or deviations for
them. For example for male 8th house indicates longevity and for female it denotes the
Mangalya Place or the longevity of the husband also. These points have been clarified in
the book Effects of planets on horoscope. The dasa-antardasa results are of general
nature.
