Baptist is the 2nd largest Christian group in Papua island. Some of the
government officers are Baptists. They have good strategy to become
the light and salt for their own people.

Geographic:
Papua is the second biggest island in the world.
Landmass of Papua is approx. 420,000 km2 or 20% of landmass of Indonesia.
Papua is 3.5 x broader than the island of Java.
Natural state: mountain range, highlands and lowlands (beaches).
Papua has more than 500 tribes and dialects who live on the beaches up to
the isolated mountains. The field is very difficult to go through, added by the
limitation of facilities and infra structure, that made a half of the island as a
very isolated and neglected region.
On the other hand, Papua is fertile and a very rich area for its natural
resources, such as mineral, gold, uranium, etc, as the Israel Promise Land
that filled with milk and honey, Canaan.
On the other hand, million people live in the backwardness, disease, civil war
and chained by the power of darkness.
Various development efforts were done, but many failed because of many
factors, for example:
- No accurate data about a designated region where 86 neglected people
groups/tribes has not been reached by churches nor government
- Churches and Christian Institutions do not have networking nor
integrated ministry
- No communication nor transportation facilities which suitable to reach
the neglected and unreached people groups.
The island of Raja Ampat is the best marine tourism in the world, with a
dramatic richness of flora and fauna, especially the ocean biota, the most
beautiful diving area in the world, and a 2 hours travel by boat from Sorong.
A very beautiful place!
Social-Politic:
The political power which take turns in Papua brought positive and negative
effect,
but the negative is more dominant. Because the system of the cultural value
from outside is forced to dominate the local people until they have cultural
shock.

In the unready condition like this, especially low human resources, made
them confused how to adapt and compete, then they became aggressive and
apathetic. They do not have self esteem.
More over intimidation from outside which has certain reasons/public benefit,
such as tradition land was taken over for transmigration location without a
fair repayment.
Social-Economic:
Even though the land of Papua is named as an island filled with overflow
richness of natural resources, but the people is living under the poverty line.
But the main poverty is the mentality poverty, such as:
- Mentally put tradition higher than the Gospel
- HIV Aids is affected this region and is on the highest level in Indonesia
- Big problems on alcohol, drugs, prostitution, polygamy, domestic
violence, no good education and poverty
- Moslem take over the economic
Please pray for the people of Papua.
