Power Door Locks

Diagnosis & Testing

Eclipse, Galant And Lancer
Make sure that fuses and fusible links related to relevant systems are not blown.

The central door locking system is controlled by the Simplified Wiring System (SWS). Troubleshooting
requires Scan Tool MB991958 and SWS monitor kit MB991813.

By connecting the following terminals to the battery, the door lock actuator should move in the
direction specified:

Driver-s side:
With the lever in the LOCK position, connect Terminal 6 to negative (-) and Terminal 4 to positive (+)
and the lever should move from LOCK to UNLOCK.

With the lever in the UNLOCK position, connect Terminal 4 to negative (-) and Terminal 6 to positive (+)
and the lever should move from UNLOCK to LOCK.

Passenger side:
With the lever in the LOCK position, connect Terminal 4 to negative (-) and Terminal 6 to positive (+)
and the lever should move from LOCK to UNLOCK.

With the lever in the UNLOCK position, connect Terminal 6 to negative (-) and Terminal 4 to positive (+)
and the lever should move from UNLOCK to LOCK.

Removal & Installation
Door Lock Motor
3000GT
Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Use a shop towel to remove the clip; and remove door window regulator handle.

Remove the decorative emblem.

Remove the door light.

Remove the inside handle cover.

Remove the door trim carpet.

Remove the upper door trim.

Remove the speaker grill.

Remove the power window switch.

Remove the upper door pad.

Remove the waterproof film.

Remove the support bracket and absorber core.

Remove the door key cylinder unlock switch connector

Remove the outside handle.

Remove the door lock key ring and key cylinder.

Remove the door latch regulator assembly.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Diamante And Mirage

Fig. Remove the inside door release handle cup retaining screw . . .

Fig. Release the front retaining clips, and lift the handle and switch assembly from the door panel

Fig. Detach the electrical connectors from the door lock and window switches, then remove the switch
plate/handle assembly

Fig. Remove the two front door panel retaining screws . . .

Fig. . . . and also the rear retaining screws from the door panel

Fig. Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it . . .

Fig. . . . then remove the door panel from the vehicle

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

If equipped with manual windows, insert a shop towel behind the window regulator handle and push
the retainer clip outward. Once the clip is removed, remove the window glass regulator handle and
escutcheon.

If equipped with power windows/locks, remove the escutcheon panel (control panel) and detach the
electrical connectors.

If equipped, remove the door grip/pull handle mounting screws and the grip from the door panel.

Remove the door pull handle cover. Remove the pull handle, if equipped.

Remove the door trim panel retaining screws.

Pull the door panel gently from the door. The panel is retained by spring clips. To separate the clips
from the door, slide a small prytool behind the clip and carefully pull the clip, with the door panel,
outward. Try not to bend the door panel or damage may occur.

Once all retainer clips are separated, remove the door panel assembly.

Carefully remove any retainer clips that remained in the door during panel removal. If damaged,
replace the retainer clips.

Remove the waterproof film from the door.

Remove the retaining clip and the lock rod from the handle assembly..

Remove the door latch assembly from the door.

To install:
Install the door latch assembly.

If removed, install the waterproof film from the door.

Install and missing or damaged retainer clips into the door panel.

Install the door panel onto the vehicle. Push retainers into the holes in the door until they lock into
position. If any clips do not lock, replace with new ones.

The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Eclipse
1999 Models
Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the door trim panel and waterproof film.

Disconnect the door lock actuator from the door latch assembly.

Remove the retainer bolt and nut. Detach the electrical connector, then remove the door latch
assembly from the door.

Remove the retainer ring from the base of the door lock cylinder.

Remove the door lock key cylinder from the vehicle.

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

2000-05 Models
Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the door grip cover.

Remove the door inside handle cover.

Remove the power window/lock switch panel assembly.

Remove the inner delta cover (or tweeter cover, if equipped).

Remove the door trim panel.

Remove the door belt line molding assembly.

Remove the door grip and grip bracket.

Remove the door inside handle.

Remove the waterproof film.

Remove the door outside handle.

Remove the door lock key cylinder and disconnect the cylinder electrical connector.

Remove the door latch assembly.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Galant
1999-2003 Models
Remove door trim as follows:
Remove the pull handle box.

Remove the inside handle cover.

Remove the inner delta cover (or tweeter cover, if equipped), Front Door only.

Remove the door trim panel.

Remove the power window switch and switch panel.

Remove the lower door weatherstripping.

Remove the inside door handle.

Remove the waterproof film.

Remove the door center sash.

Remove the door latch assembly.

Remove the door look actuator.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2004-05 Models
Remove door trim as follows:
Remove the inside handle cover.

Remove the power window switch panel assembly.

Remove the assist grip cap.

Remove door trim assembly.

Remove the belt line inner weatherstripping.

Remove the armrest bracket.

Remove the inside door handle.

Remove the waterproof film.

Remove the lower sash trim.

Remove the door latch assembly.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Lancer
Remove the door trim as follows:
Remove the cap, mounting screw and pull handle box.

Remove the power window switch panel assembly.

Remove the inside door handle cover.

Remove the front door trim panel.

Remove the door latch assembly.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Door Lock Switch

3000GT
Remove the door trim. Refer to -Door Lock Motor, Removal & Installation- in this section.

Disconnect the electrical connector and unbolt the door lock switch.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Eclipse
Remove the door trim. Refer to -Door Lock Motor, Removal & Installation- in this section.

Disconnect the electrical connector and unbolt the door lock switch.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Galant
1999-2003 Models
Remove the door trim. Refer to -Door Lock Motor, Removal & Installation- in this section.

Disconnect the electrical connector and unbolt the door lock switch.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2004-05 Models
Insert Special Tool MB990784 trim remover to pry off the power window/door switch panel assembly.

Disconnect the power window/door switch electrical connector.

Unbolt and remove the power window switch.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Lancer, Mirage And Diamante

Pry off the power window/door switch trim panel.

Disconnect the electrical connection and remove the switch panel.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Removal & Installation

Door Handle/Latch Assembly

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the door panel.

1. Peel back the weathproofing film from the door.

2. Remove the retaining clip and the lock rod from the handle assembly.

3. Remove the retaining hardware and remove the handle from the door.

4. The installation is the reverse of removal.

Door Lock Cylinders

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the door handle/latch assembly.

3. Release locking tab retaining the lock cylinder to the outside handle.

4. Remove the lock cylinder from the outside handle and feed the illumination wire through the
opening in the handle.

To install:
1. Route the illumination wire through the handle and install the lock cylinder.

2. Snap the locking tab into place retaining the lock cylinder to the outside handle.

3. Install the door handle/latch assembly.

4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hatch/Tailgate/Trunk Lid Lock Cylinder

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. If necessary, remove any trim in on the underside of the trunk lid, hatch, or tailgate.

3. Release locking tab retaining the lock cylinder to outside handle.

4. Remove the lock cylinder from the trunk lid, hatch, or tailgate.

To install:
1. Place the lock cylinder into the opening on the trunk lid, hatch, or tailgate.

2. Snap the locking tab into place retaining the lock cylinder to the outside handle.

3. If removed, install any trim in on the underside of the trunk lid, hatch, or tailgate.

4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tailgate Latch & Release Handle

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the hatch/tailgate trim cover.

3. Remove the retaining clip and the lock rod from the handle assembly.

4. Remove the retaining hardware and remove the handle from the hatch/tailgate.

5. The installation is the reverse of removal.
