Band set-up rationale Seating is very important for a good balance musically and also for all of
the lead players and section players to hear one another properly. The soft
instruments. are in the front and louder instruments in the back. Always
keep your bell up.

Blend/balance
Laying back can be rather tricky and you need to make sure you follow the
lead players at all times. Laying back is used ti show the mood in the piece
or just give it a nice feel.
The lead alto should play out in harmonized passages but in unison, the
tenors should play out more. Don't bury the lead sax player in soft
passages.

Time keeping
responsibilities
The entire rhythm section should really be paying close attention to each
other. When the drums have a fill it is the responsibility of the bass player
to keep time. Working together is key.

Swing articulation
Marking your parts is proved to be very useful. Being familiar with each
different stule of jazz is helpful. The quarter notes are shorter while the
eight notes are more legatto while they are being swung.

Following the lead player is very important because other members of the
band need to know when and how fast to open a crescendo.
