Executive Summary
The journey of Edhi Foundation begins in 1951 with the aim to line and help others
live. The one of the greatest philanthropist, humanitarian Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi is
the founder of this organization. He started this organization from a single room
and then as the donations started coming 9in he expanded its services to
ambulance, education, hospitals, adoption centers, animal hospitals, welfare
centers and others. His life partner joined him in 1966 when he married Ms.
Bilquis. They have five children. Now the whole family runs the organization and
is the board of trustees. Edhi Foundation not only has centers in Pakistan but in
abroad too including USA, Canada, Australia and Afghanistan. The donations for
this organization mainly come from the middle level income group from all over
the Pakistan. This fund is then gathered at one placed and then is distributed to
different services according to their budgets. In order to maintain integrity the
financial statements of Edhi Foundation get audited each year. Due to the tougher
economic situations more and more people each day is going below the poverty
line and therefore the need of welfare services increase each day therefore the Edhi
Foundation has planned to expand its services. Few of its expansion plans are more
Edhi Homes for Destitute, Edhi Centre at every 25 kilometer on highway, rural
welfare centers, specialized hospitals and centers and public kitchens. Edhi
Foundation gives us the lesson of humanity, living for others and giving happiness
to others. This is the sole aim in every one life. When we die we will not take
wealth, houses, cars etc. with us so why not help other and live for others so that
we could be successful in the life after death.

History and Background

All societies in the world are alike in one respect, the need of welfare for the sick, weak, destitute
and the needy. One of the ways of assessing a society and the nation is how individuals in the
society live and their standard of living. In the developing and the third world countries the need
for social welfare has always been overlook. The resources of these nations are directed towards
defense and technological progress.
In Pakistan programs for catering the needsof social development never gets much attention and
this sector always remains on the mercy of others. Therefore there is a need of such nonprofit
organizations to look after the under privilege members of the society so that the society overall
gets prosperity.
One such foundation which is catering the need of welfare for society is THE EDHI
FOUNDATION. Edhi Foundation is one of the biggest social welfare organizations in Pakistan. It
was founded by one of the prominent philanthropist, humanitarian and social activist of Pakistan
Abdul Sattar Edhi in 1951. He started the foundation from a single room in Mithadar Karachi
and he still operates the foundation from there only. Today Edhi Foundation has more than 350
centers across the country
Since the foundation history revolves around Abdul Sattar Edhi so we will start by looking into
the background and history of Abdul Sattar Edhi and then moves toward the history and
background of the Foundation
Mr. Edhi was born in 1931 in Bantva near Joona Garh, Gujrat India. At the age of 11 his mother
fell ill and became paralyzed and then lately became mentally ill. He devoted all his time into
looking after his mother but the situation got worse and his mother died after eight years when
Edhi was 19 old years. Due to the excessive care that his mother needed, he was not able to
complete his school education. This experience was a turning point in Edhis life. He was deeply
touched by the incident of his mother and thought of opening a welfare center to look after the
millions of people who suffered like his mother had suffered but had no one to look after them.
At the age of 19 he had develop a vision for himself of opening a chain of welfare centers to look
after the less privileged and needy people of society.
He and his family migrated to Karachi after the partition in 1947. To earn his living he first
started working as a peddler and then a commission agent for selling cloth. In 1951 he left this
occupation and with the help of some of the members of his community established a dispensary
which gives free medical facilities. From here he became involved in the charity work and
established a welfare trust with the name of Edhi Trust in 1951. Edhi foundation was also
established in the same year with a mere Rs. 5000. Mr. Edhi used to call himself a beggar. He
always used to beg at the street for the welfare of the people. At first he faced many problems in
getting the money as people didnt know him and did not trust him. However as the time passes
and as people started knowing him he started getting huge sum for welfare. At the start he had to
Page 6

face many problems however hurdles werent able to demotivate him and he was able to gather a
sum of Rs. 200000 which was use for the expansion of his services. He later purchased the
building where he used to run the dispensary.
Karachi was swept by a flu epidemic in 1957. Edhi responded quickly to this problem and visited
different streets and places of Karachi to give free immunizations. The word of mouth spread and
more people started donating to Edhi. With these donations he was able to purchase an
ambulance which he used to drive by himself. He called that van a Poor Man Van. He used this
van for advertisement of his services and due to this the donors base increases and his
operations expanded..Till 1990 Edhi Foundation had acquired 450 ground ambulances. Edhi
foundation has also donated 50 ambulances to the government and other nongovernmental
organizations. In 1987 an Air ambulance service with two fixed wing craft and a helicopter
began its operations. By 1992 five helicopters and five fixed wing aircraft were obtained. The
pilots were taught by army aviation officers. Civil aviation authority waived different kind of
fees like registration, licensing etc on these aircraft. Today there are more than 1800 ambulances
all over Pakistan thus serving the injured and the needy. In 1997 the Guinness World Record was
awarded to Edhi Foundation for having the world biggest volunteer based ambulance service.
Edhi foundation is also the only volunteer service in South Asia which has an air ambulance
service.
The services of Edhi trust expanded rapidly to other areas like maternity home, educational
servicesand other services. More donations were coming in from the public as his name was
getting established and known andpeople were started calling him the Angel of Mercy.
In 1966 a life time partner joined him in his work. He married to Mrs. Bilquis Edhi a nurse at his
dispensary. They have three daughter and two sons. Mrs. Edhi took charge of the Edhi maternity
home. Till now more than one million children have been delivered in edhi maternity homesand
more than 50000 abandoned new born babies have been saved and brought up. Six nursing
schools have also been setup up which had provided basic training to 40000 women in backward
areas.15 edhi homes (apna ghar) have been setup in Karachi, Hyderabad, Multan, Lahore,
Peshawar and Quetta. They supervise the destitute, runaways and psychotic. More than 3 million
children and 80000 psychotic and drug addicted had been rehabilitated and returned to their
homes by 1990.
Today there are more than 3500 people working in Edhi Foundation. On the other hand many
volunteers were also helping Edhi in his vision. Edhi foundation has eight hospitals in Karachi
and other areas which provide free medical services.
Today Edhi foundation home more than 6000 destitute, run away and mentally retarded people.
24 hours emergency serviceis provided in more than 350 centers across Pakistan. Each year more
than one million people get the free hospital and dispensary services.

Operations and Functions:

Following are the services offered by Edhi Foundation:

A.

Ambulance Service
Ambulance service with a fleet of 1800 Ambulances
Edhi Foundation has the largest Ambulance service than any other social welfare organization in
the world. Even advanced economies have failed to form such an organization. A second hand
Hillman Pickup was used as a first ambulance by Edhi in 1951 and it created the Poor Patient
Ambulance. After sixty years, Edhi foundation achieved the title of world largest ambulance
network having 1800 vehicles spread across Pakistan.
In addition Edhi has 2 aircrafts and a helicopter as an Air Ambulance to help people.
Edhi foundation also has 28 rescue boats to give aid and evacuate people from flood affected
areas and from deep sea in storm and in other situation.
These services are controlled efficiently by a quick response system which has wireless
communication devices installed in the ambulances, 24/7 connected with its control centers. Edhi
ambulance system has 3-5 minutes response time in which it reaches to place where the help is
required.

1.

Field Ambulance
Millions of people these days are being disabled in road accidents or killed or injured all across
Pakistan. After accidents people lie on the road and cannot stand to reach nearby hospital. It
happens many times that delay cause loss of valuable life, leaving many injured crippled and
handicapped.
Edhi has the largest field ambulance service to provide immediate response. Its nationwide
ambulance service equipped with the quick response system which covers remote areas across
Pakistan. It has 1800 ambulances (the largest ambulance network in Pakistan and largest private
ambulance network in the world).

2.

Air Ambulance
Edhi foundation has 2 aircrafts and a helicopter to cater the remote and those areas where field
ambulance cannot reach at all.
The story of having air ambulance is very interesting. In 1976, Mr. Edhi with his wife
BilquisEdhi had an accident near a village that has no airport or landing strip nearby. On the
same day, a building collapsed in Karachi - Bismillah Building. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was in power
at that time. Noticing Edhis absence from the scene put him surprised as Edhi never missed a
single place of the disaster where people need help. He inquired and was informed of the
situation. Bhutto immediately sent a small airplane to pick them up. Edhi was brought to Civil
Page 13

Hospital in Karachi where shortly after gaining consciousness; he remarked that he would also
like to buy a plane. BilquisEdhi asked how he will be able to buy and afford a plane as his
current situation was such that if he put his hand in the pocket for some loose change, thread
used to come out instead. However, Edhi never got disheartened and pulled along with
conviction and dedication. By the Grace of Allah, they now have 2 aircrafts, a helicopter.
B.

Animal Hostel
Edhi homes are the places for people like destitute, distressed, and who cannot afford their
livelihood and dont have skills to earn their living.
Likewise Edhi Animal hostel is a place for wounded animals and animal moving on roads like
cats, dogs, donkeys, horses, birds and other animals. It also includes missing animals and house
pets which are not wanted anymore by their owners.
In view of rising number of animals on roads, Edhi took initiative to establish a home for such
type of animals. Under one roof, there are houses for all kinds of animals. Under the same roof
there is hospital for taking care in any disease. This has now been converted into a small zoo
outside of Karachi. Veterinary doctors work there along with volunteer staff to look after those
animals at Super Highway, Karachi.
Another and same unit is made in the Korangi area of Karachi to look after such animals on
larger scale because it is costly for Edhi to take animals from mid-city towards the area outside
city. In Korangi more animals are kept under that hostel. It includes peacocks, owls, deers,
monkeys, horses, mules, cats, and a number of domestic birds.

C.

Child Adoption Center and Child Care Service

The adoption center was established in 1949 and headed by BilquisBanoEdhi, wife of Abdul
SattarEdhi. One of the most active philanthropists in Pakistan who serves humanity not based on
religious basis but only on humanity basis. This attitude of her made a place in the list of Nobile
Peace Prize nominees. There are 375 centers where lost, unwanted, and abandoned babies are
brought up.
Put (child) in the cradle no problem how is he/she. Nobody will ask you a single question about
it Abdul SattarEdhi.
Edhi foundation takes these children and looks after them in Edhi homes, and also these children
are given to childless, needy, and deserving couples who can best take care of them.
These couples contact Edhi for child adoption and by going through the entire process, i.e. taking
form from Edhi foundations website and after filling and submitting to Edhi foundation,
BilquisEdhi personally takes interviews of couples and after closely examining their economic
condition, she handover child to those couples. She looks for that the couple wanted to adopt
child must have their own home and they must have a reliable earning source, the being father is
Page 14

free from any drug or alcoholic-related diseases. Edhi foundation receives thousands of
applications for adoption but it gives only to those who are on the said criteria. Bilquis required
periodic updates of the child given to the couple. In case, separation of the couple, Edhi keeps
the right to claim the child back. Edhi is currently looking after 250 children and till now, 23,320
children have been adopted by childless families.
D.

Edhi foundation has established 18 homes across Pakistan. Most of them are in the capital city of
Sindh, Karachi. Edhi homes are shelter for physically and mentally handicapped both males and

These auto CNG rickshaws were distributed to the holders of 2 stroke rickshaws on the basis of
No Profit No Loss. This scheme was aimed to counter the unemployment factors and to reduce
the noise and atmospheric pollution.
The foundation has launched this scheme first in Karachi in which 500 units are being distributed
and now it is being continued on other cities of Pakistan.

Jhoolas (Baby Cradles)

Jhoolas (Baby Cradles) are being installed at every Edhi center in different areas. The purpose
for this is that the unwanted infants can be left in these cradles. At some cases, babies are left
over in the garbage and then they are air-lifted to Nursery Edhi branch located in Karachi. Then
later, these infants are taken into custody. They are been given special care and mostly are rose
there. In most cases, these infants are also being given to those people who do not have child in
their life ever. Proper documentation is done of all this work. All things are kept confidential.
The reason behind keeping things confidential is to keep child away from social problems.
Through this, the society problems are reduced.
Now there has been a change in the society. People in the society now voluntarily come forward
and hand over the babies to the edhi centers. These infants are then nurtured and cared.
Mrs.Bilquis Edhi is the head of this service. They have a centralized system and through this
system they check the credentials of the adopting parents and they conduct a regular follow.

Foundation. Donations were also raised from 13 other countries where Edhi foundation has
centers but 90% of the funds are raised in Pakistan. Different nongovernmental and nonprofit
organizations also give huge sum of donations each year. No donations is accepted from the
companies, government because Edhi Foundation believes on the philosophy that we are
providing services for the people so the contributions should be provided by the people only.
Many times Mr. Edhi himself stands on the roads and pavements for collecting funds and this is
one of the reasons for his fame.
Apart from that Edhi has some personal investments in government saving schemes. The profits
from these schemes made up the support for Edhi foundation. As Edhi drew few for personal
expenses the profits on saving started growing at an exponential level and the foundation was
able to develop a strong back up. Edhi had never draw a distinction between personal fund and
organization fund. He believes that what belongs to him belongs to the organization too.
Every year more than 500 volunteers serve the organization. Their services although could not be
quantified but they form the strong back of the organization.
Every year the Financial Accounts of Edhi Foundation is audited by the firm of Chartered
Accountant and filed to the Federal Government for the tax relief and grants by the Federal
Board of Revenue.

Allocation of Funds
Donation is utilized in the country where it is donated. If donation is donated in Canada it will be
utilized there only and is not remitted somewhere else. However the goods that are donated in
abroad are sent to Pakistan through the income of that country fund. The sood(interest) fund is
used to help the non-Muslims.
The funds are gathered at a central point in each country and then are distributed to different
services according to their needs. The team of professional under the supervision of Edhi in
Pakistan and his sons in abroad manage these funds.
