ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,

Index

Another year gone.

It has been a busy one development-wise in the Aldinga Bay
area with the new On The Run complex construction well
under way, an application for an Aldi supermarket complex
in historic Aldinga township and further housing
developments in the area.

Considerable effort and resources have been put in by

Council to improve the Esplanade. The long awaited toilet at
Snapper Point, along with the playground and improved
picnic facilities, have made this a delightful little hub at a
point which was popular for people to access the Aldinga
Reef and walk their dogs in a leash free area.
Unfortunately run off from the Butterworth Road drain again
damaged the steps which were built there a few years back
and that access to the beach is no longer available. As this is a
major access point to the beach and reef for scientific (Reef
Watch being one example) as well as recreational users we
hope this problem is rectified quickly.

The new shared cycling/walking path installed along the

Esplanade has also been commented on in previous editorials
here and is very well accepted, well used and welcomed, The
failure to locate it close to the cliff top, to retain the views, in
some areas is still a frustrating mystery.
This issue:
Advertising revenue is still down so we are restricted to 36
pages again this month.
For those of you complaining that you miss the handy lift-out
centre spread which showed all the shops at Aldinga Central
Shopping Centre with their phone numbers, dont complain to
us, get onto the Centre Management who discontinued
running the ad.
We welcome back Kelly Harding with the Talking Health

Other regulars are still here: CFS corner, Community Centre,

thanks go to all these contributors for supplying this

ABRA:
One of committee members, Sue Schmitke is leaving the
area. We thank Sue for her contribution over the last few
years and wish her and her hubby Rod, who has also been
busy behind the scenes for us at times, all the best in their
new pursuits.
This leaves a hole in our committee, which is already
running at a minimum. Help! If you can spare time for 1
monthly committee meeting, 1 bi-monthly general meeting
and occasional help with event management, such as the
Australia Day Breakfast, please make yourself available
and let anyone on the committee know.
On behalf of the ABRA committee I would like to wish all
readers a Merry Christmas and a safe and fulfilling New
Year.
I hope you enjoy the issue.

TRIBE FM RECONCILIATION AND NEW

On Monday 26 October 2015 the Christies Beach

and past members that is a win win for all.
Alicia Brown, Eileena Muraca, Bob Evans, Damian

SOME HISTORY TRIVIA.

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so
families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day
it was taken and sold to the tannery.
If you had to do this to survive you were "piss poor",
but worse than that were the really poor folk, who
couldn't even afford to buy a pot, they
"Didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the
lowest of the low.

CHRISTMAS IS FORGIVING
A much travelled lass for her age (Uganda, Philippines,
New Zealand - and Ethiopia after Christmas) Mary found
early in life that she had a heart of compassion.
Mary grew up in a Christian home, but as a young girl
came to the point where she said she knew her belief in
God had to be her's alone. This longish process was
helped by her mother's advice that faith as small as a
mustard seed was all she needed. 'When Mum showed me
one smaller than the size of a pinhead I said, 'I can handle
that!'; and I sincerely invited Christ into my life.
Not long after, Mary had a personal struggle with guilt
over past mistakes - a weight she couldn't shift herself.
Finally, when she realised she was unable to put every
mistake 'right', Mary says she had a powerful experience
of God lifting the weight of her past. Freedom and peace
filled her heart and she truly knew, through Christ, God
had forgiven her. From this freedom sprung a deep connection with God. 'It's both personal and real and my
most treasured relationship.'
Mary's enthusiastic response was to give herself to her
cause with whatever she had. When overseas, the plight
of the orphan children captured her heart - so she worked
in food programs, gave love, kindness, teaching, prayer
and even saw miracles and healings. Apart from survival,
the kids just wanted to be accepted and loved.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Mary volunteers as an advocate
for the organisation 'Compassion' which helps children in
many countries who live in extreme poverty.
This season could be a new start for many who recognise
that the Christ in Christmas is forgiving.

Aldinga - The 'Village of Aldinga' was laid out by Lewis Fidge,

farmer of Aldinga, circa 1857. Mr Felix de Caux (1822-1877),
an early settler in the district (see Dingabledinga) said that
Aldinga was a corruption of an Aboriginal word meaning
'much water', while other sources suggest it means 'good place
for meat', 'open wide plain' or 'tree district'.
A lengthy poem entitled 'Aboriginal Nomenclature by a Native'
written by an early resident of McLaren Vale contains a line
which says: 'Nal-dinga (open wide)'.
Aldinga Plain was called ngalti-ngga by the Aborigines and
accordingly 'open, wide' appears to be the logical meaning of
'Aldinga'.
Baudin called Aldinga Bay Ance des Curieux - 'Cove of the
Curious Ones', while on Freycinet's charts it is Baie Vendonne

Christmas Blessings
As the end of the year looms peoples thoughts turn to
Christmas celebrations and gatherings.
Each year the very festive Willunga Christmas Tree
festival supports the Christmas Bowl appeal. This appeal
has been running for over sixty years.
The Christmas Bowl appeal began on Christmas Day
1949, when a minister named Rev Frank Byatt in
Victoria placed a simple empty bowl on the table before
him. He humbly asked his friends and family to
contribute what they felt the cost of the meal had
been. Rev Byatt asked that they consider their own good
fortune in being able to share a Christmas meal together
in comfort and safety.
Our community is now invited to share Gods blessings
of love and friendship in the form of a gift to help people
who had fled the horrors of war as refugees. For the first
time in history, there are nearly 60 million displaced
people in the world who need our help. - See more at:
htt p :// www. a ctf or p ea c e. or g. a u/C hr ist ma s Bowl#sthash.ofz3fEsU.dpuf
By the time you read this, the Willunga Christmas Tree
festival will of course be over for another year. But the
opportunity to support the Christmas Bowl appeal is still
open.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental

Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils
state wide from sending these materials to landfill.
Computers and televisions are also be part of this ban.
Therefore these materials can no longer be accepted as
part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the
Council dump off South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the
Ewaste section.
You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip
depositing the card they issue you with. This card will
take you off their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.

For those who would like to worship and sing their

favourite carols, Christmas worship times at Willunga
Uniting Church are Christmas Eve 7.30pm (family
friendly time) and Christmas Day 9.30am.
Blessings for you and yours and prayers for all those who
grieve at Christmas.
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some
reason, took my order first.
"I'll have the strip steak, " I said
"Medium rare, please. "
He said, "Aren't you worried about the
mad cow?""
"Nah, " I replied. "She can order for
herself"
.. and then the fight started

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent

lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes)
contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can
leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not
put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available at
Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.

A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.

Overcoming Reflux (Continued)

When you swallow, the food passes from the mouth
down a long tube called your oesophagus to your
stomach. The mechanism that your body has for allowing
food and drink to be digested should also stop food and
digestive juices from coming back up. When this
happens, the acids can begin to burn the tissue and can
lead to ulceration of the tissue.

Natural Health Care

There are many things that can cause reflux or make it

worse. These include eating too fast or overeating, eating
spicy or fatty foods, stress, anxiety and emotional
trauma, smoking and drinking excessive coffee, cola or
alcohol. Reflux can also occur as a symptom of more
serious conditions. This can be discussed at your next
appointment. There are many things that can reduce your
chance of suffering reflux such as; Eating smaller meals
more frequently. Taking time to relax and enjoy a
leisurely meal time. Managing stress effectively (I have
some stress management techniques that I can share with
you)

Overcoming Reflux
Reflux and indigestion affect one in ten people every
week. It can range from mild to extremely severe.
Although symptoms can be mild it can still be causing
damage to your body.

Avoid taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs if

possible as these increase your risk of ulcer. If these were
specifically prescribed for you, discuss your
requirements before you stop using them. You can talk to
me about effective alternative anti-inflammatories that
are gentle on your digestive system. As your Natural
Health Practitioner I can support you in making simple
dietary and lifestyle changes that will address reflux and
indigestion, Reducing or eliminating Helicobacter pylori
(the bacteria associated with ulceration) and repairing the
tissues of the gut. I can also provide you with
supplements specifically proven to treat these problems.
There are products that can give relief within 10 minutes.
So please call and make an appointment if you would
like support and relief from reflux or any other of your
health concerns on 0885 565945.

Opening times January

Our office will be open 9-12 pm from Mon 18th to Fri
29th Jan for enrolments and enquiries. Classes commence 1st Febwood groups may begin in January.
Last day this year is 11th December.

What an exciting year!

In 2015, addition to our great range of courses and
classes, we ran 3 major events. These events couldnt happen without can-do leadership and generous volunteers
who give so willingly of their time and energy.
Melbourne Cup Lunch
This was a first for us and what fun it
was! Our kitchen volunteers turned
on a delicious 3-course meal, our MC
Lyndall Moule kept the energy going
with lots of fun and
games, and our tireless volunteers
worked all day to set
up, decorate, serve
food and clean up.
Everyone had a ball, even though a wifi
gremlin took over at race time! Next year
well have the NBN Our grateful
thanks go to RnR Chickens of Seaford
Road who donated chicken and coleslaw
for 80. The food was top quality! And what great craft
skills from Jan Boyd, who made the jockey cap table centres and the very cute horses!
Childrens Day
On October 30 we held a wonderful morning of fun and
activities for our little people, including the Amazing
Drumming Monkeys, craft and play, a petting zoo and a
free sausage sizzle. Over 600 people attended and the
buzz was amazing!
Biggest Morning Tea
In support of members of our community who are dealing
with cancer, we held a fundraiser for the Cancer Council
in May. It was a great morning with amazing entertainment from Tatachilla College. Around 90 people attended
and we raised $1177, testament to the generosity of the
Aldinga community.

With Fire Danger Season now with us

(Fire Danger Season started on the 17th November) please
take a few moments to make sure your home and family
are bushfire ready.
Around your homeIs all rubbish cleared away? Trees
trimmed back and undergrowth removed? Could a fire
truck fit down your driveway or gate ways? (a 3m wide x
3m high gap is needed) Are your gutters on your home
and sheds free from leaves and tree litter? Is your garden
area free from dead weeds?
For your Family be aware of each days fire ban rating.
Watch the nightly news this will tell you of the next days
fire danger rating. Have an action plan for your family,
dont forget your pets; an action plan covers what you
will do in the event of a bushfire breaking out near you.
When travelling through some of our beautiful countryside be aware of any current fires and avoid that area.
Listen to local radio or check the C.F.S website for any
public notices (www.cfs.sa.gov.au) you can also install
the CFS app on your smart phone which also shows alerts
for your current area.
These are a few of the things you can do to be aware this
fire danger season. This applies to people living in the
suburbs as well those of us who live on rural property.
We at Aldinga Beach C.F.S would like to wish everyone
in our community and beyond, Happy Holidays and have
an awesome new years celebration.

MORE HISTORY TRIVIA

In the 1550s Baths consisted of a big
tub filled with hot water.
The man of the house had the privilege
of the nice clean water, then all the
other sons and men, then the women and finally the
children.
Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you
could actually lose someone in it.
Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath

You lovers of the English
language might enjoy this .
There is a two-letter word that
perhaps has more meanings
than any other two-letter word,
and that is 'UP.'
It's easy to understand UP, meaning
toward the sky or at the top of the
list, but when we awaken in the
morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic
come UP?
Why do we speak UP and why are
the officers UP for election and why
is it UP to the secretary to write UP a
report?
We call UP our friends.
And we use it to brighten UP a
room, polish UP the silver; we
warm UP the leftovers and clean UP
the kitchen.
We lock UP the house and some
guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has
really special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for
tickets, work UP an appetite, and
think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing, but to be
dressed UP is special.
A drain must be opened UP because
it is blocked UP.
We open UP a store in the morning
but we close it UP at night
