This unfolds the light within the individual, the shedding of constriction of limited beliefs and
the coming into the awareness of the divine spark residing within us all.
Every soul has its own Path to the Truth, and there are many Paths to choose from. It is up to
each individual to find the Path that is right for them.
Nafs/Self:
Nafs in man is the totality of sentiments, tendencies, desires, wishes, experiences, and our
heredity characteristics; in short, it is man's personality.
What create a difference between one man and another is Self/Nafs rather than Rooh/Soul. It is
man's Rooh/Soul which transform and evolves.

I claim not they my soul was innocent, indeed the soul incites to evil,
except in as much as my Lord has mercy. (12:53)
I swear by the day of Arising! And I swear by the reproachful soul! (75:1-2)
By the soul that which shaped it and inspired it with its dissolution and its piety. (91: 7-8)
Soul/Rooh:
Based upon the Qur'anic verse; "They ask thee concerning the spirit (of inspiration). Say The
spirit cometh by command of my Lord: of Knowledge it is only a little that is communicated to
you, (O men!)." (Holy Qur'an 17:85) This verse teaches us that the spirit is an 'Amr' i.e. the work
of Allah. In other words, it is a created thing, not self-existent. The Holy Qur'an does not go
beyond telling us that. It does not tell us the nature of the spirit. However, just like our ignorance
of the nature of electricity or magnetism does not prevent us from taking full advantage of these
wonders of creation, we can advance ourselves spiritually by taking full advantage of the
functions of the spirit.
Rooh is something which descends to man from God and we interpret it as our 'inside Prophet'
namely, it is a representative from the Lord inside Insan. It is the relationship of God with man
that appears under various names in different Prophets. This spirit is clean and innocent and it
cannot err (I).
In order to talk about the shaping of one's self we must concentrate upon the analysis and
examination of Nafs. Once we reach this stage we come right across the sacred Islamic school
and we are proud that Islam has conducted in-depth and extensive analysis in this area
unparalleled in any other school or system.
HEART:
What is Our Heart?
When we refer to the heart, we do not mean physical heart but your (non physical) spiritual
heart, which is the center of subtle feeling. It is located at the center of your chest and it is where
your true self (also known as spirit or atman) is located.
Spiritually speaking a human has 7 major chakras. One of those chakras is known as the Heart
chakra or Anahata. Our spiritual heart is located inside our heart chakra. The picture below
depicts our spiritual heart location in relation to our heart chakra, relative to our human physical
body.
As you can see from the picture, within our spiritual heart we have our spirit or true self. And
within our spirit we have our Inner Heart. Many ancient spiritual books stated that the biggest
secret lies in the core of our heart and that is our Inner Heart, heart of the heart, which always
knows the truth and always directs us to True Source, the Source of our true self.
Our Inner Heart is the spark of our True Source. It is always pure and cannot be contaminated by
anything. The Sir layer is a special layer that protects our Inner Heart from any outside
impurity influences. For general understanding, the heart, the spirit and Inner Heart are
considered the same or referred to as heart.
What becomes a problem is that most peoples Inner Hearts are closed because their hearts are
not open yet. With a closed heart, ones Inner Heart cannot function at all. Hence, even a
criminal has an Inner Heart. Unfortunately, his/her Inner Heart does not function at all. However,
as soon as that person uses his/her Inner Heart, at that moment he/she will direct him/herself to
True Source. This shows how important and astonishing the power of the Inner Heart is.
For those of you who are diligent in carrying out your spiritual or religious duties, you will
obtain the benefits a lot easier. Nevertheless, to obtain the maximum benefit, it is not enough to
simply know about your Inner Heart.
1. Existance:
One of the most important aspects of living a spiritually healthy life is to have a
heart that is enlightened with the truth of Islam and one that is close to Allah and
His remembrance.
2.
Function:
One of the primary ways we can spiritually awaken our hearts is to take time not
to just read the Quran but to also understand it with full devotion.
3.
Diagrametically:
In conclusion, let us ensure that we enlighten our hearts by inculcating the habit
of taking the Quran from our shelves and bringing its words and message in our
hearts with full devotion
Quran:
And their hearts are sealed so that they do not understand.
- Surah at-Tawbah, 9:87
Allah has sealed their hearts so that they do not know.
- Surah at-Tawhab, 9:93
We seal their hearts so they cannot hear (the Truth).
- Surah al-Araf, 7:100
From all these above verses it is clear that if the Heart is corrupt, man cannot understand or
realize the truth properly. The degree of goodness or badness of Heart determines the character
and action of a person. This is Heart and this is the tale of the Heart.
Those who attain faith, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the
remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
- Surah Raad, verse 28
12) The Quran descended in the Heart of the Holy Prophet
.. Indeed Gabriel has brought this revelation upon your heart O Muhammad by the will of Allah,
confirming what came before (Torah and Gospel) and good news for the faithful.
- Surah Baqara, verse 97
13) Heart of the faithful melts at Divine Remembrance
Has the time not come for those who have faith that their hearts should become humbly
submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not
be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their
hearts hardened; and many of them are transgressors.
- Surah Hadid, verse 16
14) It is the Heart that become sinful
.. let him who is entrusted discharge his trust [faithfully] and let him fear Allah , his Lord. And do
not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah is Knowing
of what you do.
- Surah Baqara, verse 283
15) Heart become rusted with transgressing acts
When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him he says: "Tales of the ancients!"
Nay! rather, what they used to do has become like rust upon their hearts.
- Surah Mutaffin, verse 13,14
The Holy Prophet, Allahs peace and blessings be upon him has said, Then the discriminating
ability between good and not good is lost. (Muslim, Mishkat collection)
Never, rather whatever they have accumulated (of sins) it causes rust to cover over their Heart.
(Timizi, Ibn Majah, Masnad e Ahmad and Mishkat)
16) Heart is sealed
Allah has sealed upon their Heart.
- Surah Muhammad, verse 16
Regarding anger, which is one of the blame worthy traits, the Holy Prophet, may Allah perfect
our love for him, has said: You should distance yourselves from anger because the anger of the
children of Adam is like a burning coal in the Heart. (Tirmizi, Mishkat)
The Prophet has also prayed as: O Allah! Please remove anger from my Qalb. (Masnad e
Ahmad, Abu Yala).
It is He Who has sent down deep inner peace into the hearts of the believers so that they may add
faith to their faith ..
- Surah Fatah, verse 4
Truly in that there is a reminder for one who has a heart or he who listens attentively and is a
witness.
- Surah Qaf, verse 37
Those who do not have faith on hereafter, their Heart disobey and deny.
- Surah Nahal, verse 22
32) Heart that pay attention is a pre-requisite to enter the Garden
And the Garden shall be brought near not far to those who guarded themselves for Allah. (It
shall be announced) This is what you were promised - for every repentant preserver (of
covenant) who is in awe of the Merciful in the unseen and comes with a contrite heart; enter it in
peace. This is the Unending Day.
- Surah Qaf, verse 31-34
33) In the assembly of Allah in the hereafter, the only benefiting will be a purified Heart
The Awesome Day when neither wealth nor children will profit anyone except him who brings to
Allah a pure heart.
- Surah Shuara, verse 88, 89
