Objective:
After completing this participants will be able to:
Take, gather, and manipulate various types of information, including notes and s ketches
Set OneNote notes to other office programs
Locate a particular note again by us ing s earch or organizing notes by and creating and us ing s ections and notebooks .

Introduction to OneNote
Micros oft OneNote 2007 functions as a digital notebook, a s ingle place to s tore and acces s information about s chool, work,
and your pers onal life. It takes jus t a few minutes to create a new OneNote notebook with tabbed s ections and pages .
1. Open MS OneNote on your computer. Review the layout of OneNote 2007 with participants . On the top of the window
they can find, the menus and tools with different commands very s imilar to MS Office 2003.
2. On the left s ide, default notebooks that are already created when OneNote open for the firs t time. Have participants click
on the OneNote 2007 guide.

OneNote is different than other MS Office programs because you can type anywhere, just click
and type. Have participants practice by typing their name.

3. Click the on the Take Note of Many page, located on the right margin. Explore the different types of notes that can
be taken as you demons trate them.

4. Click on the Gather Screen Clippings page, located on the right margin.

5. Take 5-10 minutes to explore the other features of OneNote.

Creating a Notebook, Adding Sections, Adding Content


6. You will create a Notebook that is part of the third grade Houghton Mifflin Anthology. It is bas ed on the s tory Ballad
of Mulan.
7. Open a new notebook by clicking File, Choose New, Blank.

8. Title the Notebook: The Ballad of Mulan


9. Choos e a color. Click Next.

10. There are s everal options when creating a Notebook, becaus e it can be us ed on one or multiple computers , or it
can be s hared with others . For now, s elect - I will use it on this computer, and then click Next.

11. The next s creen allows the us er to choos e the location of the Notebook. By default, Notebooks are s tored in the
OneNote Notebooks folder in the Documents folder. For now, keep the default location and click Create.
12. Once created the firs t page in the firs t s ection of the Notebook The Ballad of Mulan opens .
13. Right-click on the s ection named New Section 1, then click rename. Type Vocabulary, and then hit Enter.
The tab can als o be renamed by double clicking on the words New Section 1.
14. Create a page within the Vocabulary Section. Have participants create three pages each with a new vocabulary
word as the title.
a. Armor
b. Comrades
c. Endured

15. Us e the Drawing Toolbar to s elect the pen tool.


16. Brains torm thoughts that firs t come to mind when thinking of thes e vocabulary words , and draw, write, and
doodle them randomly throughout the pages using the pen tool and mouse.

17. Create a new s ection title Setting, and then title the firs t page of the Setting s ection, China.

19. Screen clip the map and the flag from the wiki and ins ert them into OneNote. (These pictures are not
copyrighted. When doing this activity with students any media used should not be copyrighted and be prescreened)

20. Create a new section titled Making Judgments, and then create a new page titled Pros/Cons.
21. Type Do you think Mulans decis ion to fight in her fathers place is a good idea?, under the title.
22. Create a table with two columns and four rows . Title the columns Pro and Con. Have participants create the
Pro/Con table on their page.

23. Have participants create a new page in the Making Judgments s ection titled Conclusion.
24. What are other pos s ible s ections that could be added to the Ballad of Mulan Notebook?
25. This could be the beginning of a Reading e-Portfolio.

Sending OneNote pages to other MS Office Programs


26. When us ing other programs from the Office 2007 Suite, the connections between them are very good. When us ing
Outlook 2007 on the s ame computer you can quickly copy the contents of any e-mail mes s age in Outlook to a new
page in OneNote.
27. Copy an email mes s age from Outlook 2007 to OneNote 2007.
a. Click the email message to s elect it. If you want to copy multiple e-mail mes s ages to OneNote, hold down
the CTRL key while s electing mes s ages. (OneNote will create a separate page in the Unfiled Notes section
for each message)
b. On the Standard toolbar, click Send to OneNote button.

28. The s elected mes s age(s ) are copied to a new page in the Unfiled Notes s ection in OneNote. This page can be
moved to any new or exis ting s ection in any of the notebooks .

29. The connection als o works in the oppos ite direction you can s end any notes page in an e-mail mes s age.
30. Send an OneNote page to an Outlook E-mail mes s age.
a. Select more than one pages , hold down the CTRL key while clicking the other page tabs .
b. To s elect a page and its s ubpages , double click the page tab of one of the pages in the group.
c. On the Standard toolbar, click Email.

31. The s elected notes are copied into the body of the mes s age. A file is als o attached to the mes s age, s o that even
recipients who do not have OneNote ins talled can view the notes in a s tandard Web brows er.
32. OneNote page can als o be s ent to Micros oft Word. Click File, Send To, Microsoft Word.

Adding, Removing and Searching for Note Tags


33. Us ing tags can help mark and eas ily find important parts of notes . OneNote provides s everal predefined note tags .
34. Add a note tag.
a. Place the mous e in the paragraph that you want to tag.
b. On the Standard toolbar, click the arrow next to the Tag button, and s elect the note tag from the lis t.

35. Remove a note tag by right-clicking it on the page, and click Remove Tag on the s hortcut menu.
36. After tags have been added they can be s earched.
37. To s earch for tagged notes .
a. On the Standards toolbar, click the arrow next to the Tag button, and click Show all Tagged Notes.

38. The s ummary of all tags in our notes appear in the Tags Summary pane.
