Fromthearchitect.Afteraneightmonthrenovation,theBiesboschMuseumreopenedto
thepublicthissummer.Themuseumhasbeencompletelytransformedandextendedwith
anewwingthatopenstoitsbeautifulsurroundingsandhousesarestaurantandtemporary
exhibitionspaceforcontemporaryart.Thepermanentexhibitionthatexplainsthehistorical
BiesboschandafreshwatertidalparkarealsoplannedontheMuseumIsland.Building,
interior,watermodelandfreshwatertidalparkweredesignedbyStudioMarcoVermeulen,
Metallics
developmentoftheregionhasalsobeentotallyrevamped.Alargewatermodelofthe
andtheexhibitionwasdesignedbyStudioJoyceLangezaal.

Reasonforredevelopment
WatersafetywasthekeyreasonforthedevelopmentoftheBiesboschMuseumIsland.As
partofanationalwatersafetyprogramme,the4450hectareNoordwaardpolderhasbeen
turnedintoawaterretentionarea.OutletsoneithersideoftheBiesboschMuseumwere
dugtocreateanewisland.

Formostvisitors,theBiesboschMuseumisthestartingpointforexploringtheBiesbosch
NationalPark.Themuseum,however,wasoutdatedandnotequippedtoaccommodatethe
growingvisitornumbers.Alackofadequatecateringfacilitieswasparticularlyurgent.
Moreover,thepresentationofthecollectionneededanoverhaul.In2012,some35,000
peoplevisitedthemuseum,whileinthefirstthreemonthssincethereopening,nofewer
than30,000peoplevisitedthecomplex!

MuseumBuilding
Toavoidanyunnecessarywasteofmaterialorenergy,thehexagonalstructureofthe
originalBiesboschMuseumpavilionshasbeenretained,andanew1000m2wingwas
addedonthesouthwesternsideofthebuilding.Featuringextensiveareasoffenestration,
thewingopenstothemuseumgardenontheisland.Theextensionhousesanorganic
restaurantthatoffersviewsoftheadjacentwaterandlandscape,andspacefortemporary
exhibitions.

Theexistingbuildinghousesthepermanentexhibition,library,multipurposetheatre,
entranceareawithreceptionandmuseumshop.Visitorscanobtaintouristinformation
abouttheBiesboschNationalParkandbuyticketsforthemuseumandelectricboats.The
additionoflargedormersontheroofcreatedspaceforthemuseumsoffices,theDutch
ForestryCommissionandtheParkBoard.
FloorPlan
Theoldandnewsectionsofthemuseumaresurroundedbyearthworksandcoveredwitha
roofofgrassandherbs.Theroofaddsecologicalvalue,creatingasculpturalobjectthat
readsaslandartand,atthesametime,manifestsitselfinthesurroundinglandscape.A
foldintheroofgiveswaytoanadventurousmountaintrailandalookoutpost.

Exhibition
ThenewpermanentexhibitionoffersarichoverviewofthehistoryoftheBiesbosch,the
cultureandthecollectionofthemuseum.TheuniquestoryoftheBiesboschisdisplayedin
sevenpavilions,coveringitshistoryfromtheElizabethFloodof1421toitscurrentstatus
asarecreationalarea.Theresidents,economy,craftsandnaturearedisplayedin
multimediaspacesthatstimulateallsenses.Originalfilmmaterialandphotographs,
interviewsandtoolspresentapersonalandvividaccountoftheareaanditsresidents.

Energy
Boththenewwingandexistingvolumearedesignedtominimizeenergyconsumption.The
glassfrontisfittedwithstateoftheartheatresistantglassthateliminatestheneedfor
blinds.Theearthworksonthenorthwesternsideandthegreenroofserveasadditional
insulationandaheatbuffer.Oncolddays,abiomassstovemaintainsthebuildingatthe
righttemperaturethroughfloorheating.Onwarmdays,waterfromtheriverflowsthrough
thesamepipingtocoolthebuilding.

WillowFilter
Sanitarywastewaterispurifiedthroughawillowfilter:thefirstintheNetherlandsandan
acknowledgementofthewickercultureoftheBiesbosch.Willowsabsorbthewastewater
andthesubstancesitcontains,amongthemnitrogenandphosphate.Thesesubstances
actasnutrientsandhelpthewillowtogrow.Thepurifiedwaterisdischargedintothe
adjacentwetlandareaandflowsfromthereintotheriver.Oncethewillowsaresawnand
dried,thewoodcanbeusedasfuelinthebiomassstoveinthemuseumorforother
purposes.

SpecifictotheBiesbosch
Themuseumusesmanyresourcesavailableinthearea,notonlyforitsenergysupplyand
watertreatment,butalsoforthemenuinthemicrobrewrestaurant.Moreover,themuseum
cancountonthecommitmentofdozensofvolunteers,manyofwhomhaveworkedinthe
Biesboschinthepast.Evenmostofthecontractorsandconstructionworkersinvolvedin
theredevelopmentcomefromtheimmediatearea.

TheBiesboschhasarichhistoryinharvestingandprocessingnaturalmaterialsandisbio
basedavantlalettre.Themuseumthereforeprovidesspaceforart,preferablymadeof
naturalmaterialsfromtheBiesboschitself,inthenewwingandontheisland.

Midwaythroughthelastcentury,theimpressivesturgeonandsalmondisappearedfromthe
watersoftheBiesbosch.WiththeopeningoftheHaringvlietlocksandthecleanerwaterin
theriver,thelikelihoodofareturnofthesedistinctivespecieshasincreased.Theindoor
pondattherestauranthintsatthereturnofthesturgeon.

FreshwaterTidalPark
TheMuseumIsland,whichwillberealizedinthespringof2016,isafreshwatertidalpark
ontheislandthatreceivesriverwaterthroughanewlydugcreek.Thetidesandseasonal
variationsinwaterlevelscanbeclearlyexperiencedthankstothegentleslopeofthe
banksalongthecreek.Theslopesalsocreatearichdiversityoffloraandfauna,sothat
everyvisittotheislandwillbedifferent.Ameanderingpathprovidesaccesstotheisland,
whichcontinuouslychangesinappearancebecauseofthechangingwaterlevels.

BiesboschExperience
The'BiesboschExperience'willberealizedontheMuseumIslandinthespringof2016.
ThisscalemodeloftheBiesbosch,withpolders,dikesandstreams,explainsthewater
managementfunctionandimportanceoftheareawhenwaterlevelsarehigh.Withinahalf
hourcycle,thewaterchangesfromextremelylowtoextremelyhigh.Childrenandadults
areabletoalterthecourseofthewaterbyoperatingvariouskindsoflocks.
