INTRODUCING CAT ADVANCED EFFICIENCY ENGINE OIL
FILTERS: 1R-1807 AND 1R-1808
Caterpillar is expanding its oil filter product line with the release of two new spin-on
Advanced Efficiency Engine Oil Filters, the 1R-1807 (Image 1) and 1R-1808 (Image 2). The
Advanced Efficiency Engine Oil Filters enable customers to increase contamination control
capabilities over standard efficiency filters, without reducing the Cat recommended or
current customer change intervals as is required with a competitors high efficiency filters.
The Advanced Efficiency line of Cat Engine Oil Filters are also more economically priced
than competitors filters, giving customers a filtration option unmatched by the filter industry.

Use on Engines with ACERT Technology

The 1R-1807 and 1R-1808 were released for new engine w/ACERT Technology production
beginning in January 2004, and are now the standard, recommended filters for maintenance
replacement on these engines. Use of these Cat filters on engines w/ACERT TM Technology
is not mandatory. However, should a competitors filter cause a component failure that is not
due to materials and workmanship Cat warranty will not apply.
Use on Other Engines
Advanced Efficiency Lube Filters are also approved for all Cat engine models that use the
1R-0739 and 1R-0716 Standard Efficiency Engine Oil Filters. These filters can be used
when customers want to run their engine oil at a cleaner level than with standard efficiency
filters. (Not for use on 3056 and 3066 engines. Approval for use on these engines is in
process. Notification will be provided at the time of approval as a future addendum to this
IRM.) The table below is a cross-reference for Standard and Advanced Efficiency Engine Oil
Filters.

1R-0716

The 1R-1807 and 1R-1808 are optional replacements for earlier Cat engines which use the 1R-0739
and 1R-0716. With the release of these new Advanced Efficiency Engine Oil Filters, customers now
have additional options for improved oil filtration.

New Filter Media For Improved Contamination Control & Component Protection
The new Advanced Efficiency Engine Oil Filters contain an improved filter media, which
results in an increase in contamination control capability, combining increased filtration
efficiency with excellent dirt holding capacity and low pressure drop characteristics. This
combination offers enhanced contamination control performance over the Standard
Efficiency Engine Oil Filters. For customers, this means less wear on the critical oil
lubricated engine components. See the following graphs.

Cat engine oil filters are designed with reserve dirt holding capacity to ensure change
intervals are met without excessive filter restriction. As a result, engine oil degradation,
rather than filter capacity, is the driving factor for specifying the maintenance interval. The
Advanced Efficiency Engine Oil filters have been designed to significantly increase the
filters contamination control capabilities, which will result in a much cleaner engine
lubrication system. This has been accomplished with only a minimal loss in the reserve dirt
holding capacity, while meeting the change intervals currently specified in the Operation and
Maintenance Manual (OMM). The graph on the next page, illustrates the dirt holding
capacity performance of the Advanced Efficiency filters compared to Standard Efficiency
filters. Service interval extension beyond the recommended interval for any application
should only be performed by following the appropriate procedure in the OMM, using
standard SOSSM Services as indicated.

Dirt Holding Capacity Performance

Caterpillar will release additional lube filter efficiency options in the near future continuing
to give customers an economical solution that maximizes oil filtration performance, while
maintaining current change intervals.
