Get a head-start on tax season

The dawn of a new calendar year
often marks the end of the sometimes
hectic holiday season. This time of year
marks a return to normalcy for many
families, as the kids go back to school
and parents return to work.
The beginning of January also serves
as a great time to start preparing for tax
season. While the deadline to file
returns may be several months away,
getting a head-start allows men and
women the chance to organize their tax
documents so they aren't racing against
a deadline come April. The following are
a handful of ways to start preparing for
your returns now.
Find last year's return. You will
need information from last year's return
in order to file this year, so find last
year's return and print it out if you plan
to hire a professional to work on your
return.
Gather dependents' information.
While you might know your own Social
Security number by heart, if you have
dependents, you're going to need their
information as well. New parents or
adults who started serving as their elderly parents' primary caretakers over
the last year will need their kids' and
their folks' social security numbers. If
you do not have these numbers upon

filing, your return will likely be delayed

and you might even be denied potentially substantial tax credits.
Gather your year-end financial
statements. If you spent the last year
investing, then you will have to pay
taxes on any interest earned. Interest
earned on the majority of savings
accounts is also taxable, so gather all of
your year-end financial statements from
your assorted accounts in one place.
Doing so will make filing your return,
whether you do it yourself or work with
a professional, go more quickly.
Speak with your mortgage lender.
Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money
paid in interest on your home or homes
is tax deductible. If these forms are not
received in a timely manner, speak with
your lender. You might even be able to
download them from your lender's
secure website.
Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no
matter how small, are tax deductible.
While it's easiest to maintain a list of all
charitable donations you make as the
year goes on, if you have not done that,
then you can make one now. Look for
receipts of all contributions, contacting

any charities you donated to if you misplaced any receipts.

Book an appointment with your
tax preparation specialist now. As April
15 draws closer, tax preparers' schedules
get busier and busier. The earlier you
book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for
that meeting. In addition, if you have

Music Under Glass schedule announced

Milwaukee County Parks has
announced the schedule for Music
Under Glass, the concert series at the
Mitchell Park Domes. Live performances
and computer-generated light shows
will fill The Domes from 6:30-9 p.m.
every Thursday from Jan. 14-March 10,
2016. The Domes, Milwaukees Living
Landmark, is located at 524 S. Layton
Blvd.
Music Under Glass is presented in
partnership with the Friends of The
Domes, Waterstone Bank, and Blue
Moon Brewing Company.
Music Under Glass has been the
local cure for cabin fever since 2009,
said Milwaukee County Executive Chris

Abele. Every week, residents and visitors alike come out to enjoy our areas
talent and to explore the Tropical,
Desert, and Floral Show domes. During
the last series of 11 concerts, nearly
5,000 people took the opportunity to
visit this Milwaukee County gem.
MUG has been a showcase for top
local talent, with styles ranging from
blues to zydeco, said Sandy Folaron,
Director of The Domes, and our closing
beach partycomplete with sand, beach
balls, Elvis in Hawaii, and Polynesian
dancersnow thats a hit with everyone!
Seating near the Show Dome stage is

January Meat Deal

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on your
website and they look amazing! My problem is that I
have had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt
and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to please
help me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out to
chew. Can you fix this dentists dentures so I dont have
to pay for another set! Please help me, as I cant live this
way.
Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You did
not mention if this was an immediate set of dentures
given to you the day your other teeth were removed or
simply a replacement for older dentures. There is an art
to making dentures and even with tremendous care and
skill; denture fabrication is a process that requires
patience. As people live with dentures they experience
continued bone loss. There is so much bone loss that
dentures begin to move and may actually slide during
chewing even with using denture adhesives. When teeth
are removed you actually lose up to 40% of the
remaining bone width in the first year after teeth are
removed and you can continue to lose 40-60% of the
remaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!
The solution is to save teeth if possible and if not
practical to place mini-implants or traditional implants to
preserve the bone.
Implants preserve bone! That means that over time
dentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.
I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fitting
dentures usually require that they be made again from
scratch. It is just too easy to change someones denture
and then feel that the changes that were made could have
made your situation worse! So most dentists will want to
start over with new impressions, brand new teeth and
mountings to try and remedy the problems you have
experienced. Trying to make your dentures fit may
actually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of
money, which would be wasted if your dentures could
not be made to be comfortable.
In rare situations, I will work with someones old
dentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores or
simply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

At the age of 17, Jonas Gutman was sent to
the first of five consecutive concentration
camps. Prisoners were divided into 2 lines;
Jonas switched lines so a man could be with
his brother. Jonas lived, while the other line
was sent to the gas chamber.
When Jonas health declined, daughter

Wisconsin DMV helps individuals comply with new law

As of January 1, 2016, a new
Wisconsin state law requires an individual selling a privately-owned motor
vehicle to another private party to
report that sale to the Wisconsin
Department
of
Transportation
(WisDOT) within 30 days of the sale. To
help state residents, WisDOT has developed an online service where sellers
can conveniently submit their notice
of sale electronically. Seller Notify is
available
at

wisconsindmv.gov/SellerNotify.
"We understand this is a new
process for private-to-private sellers,"
said Mitchell Warren, director of
Vehicle Services. "Our goal is to make
this as easy as possible for them to
comply with the new law." This
requirement does not apply to businesses buying or selling vehicles or
motor vehicle dealers, Warren said.
Private motor vehicle sellers can
report the sale in three steps through

Seller Notify. This online tool also

enables the seller to print a receipt,
email a copy, or save the recorded
information for their records. Sellers
can also report the sale by completing
and submitting a WisDMV form (MV

DPI announces new educational video series

The
Department
of
Public
Instruction is filling a void in the world
of educational materials thanks to a
collaborative project involving DPI staff
and more than a dozen authors from
around Wisconsin. The video series,
called Wisconsin Writes, features
walk-throughs of the writing process by
each author and a look at their typical
work day.
Each author who agreed to participate appears in two types of videos.

First, they demonstrate their writing

process by moving forward on an actual
piece they were working on. The second
element, a straightforward interview,
gives students advice on writing and a
sense of what its all about. The DPIs
Marci Glaus, an English language arts
education consultant, visited writers in
their usual writing spaces to provide an
authentic look at habits, techniques,
and environments of this group that
has so much to offer students. Featured
writers include two New York Times Best
Sellers, the states poet laureate, childrens authors, writers of non-fiction,
fiction, and other Wisconsin-based
writers.
For our students to graduate ready
for career and college no matter what
they pursue they need writing and
other literacy skills, said State
Superintendent Tony Evers. I appreciate that so many of our states professional writers share this sentiment and
were willing to show their writing
process and workspace, Evers said.
How better to learn these skills than
from their fellow Wisconsinites who
have built a successful career around
them?
Wisconsin Writes began this fall,

with installments released approximately biweekly. Videos released so far feature the following authors (an example
